Spice of Life: Warly Edition

Rewards players for discovering new foods, seasoning dishes, and eating a varied diet.

Spice of Life Warly Edition

Distributed under GNU LGPL v2.1. Credits, source links, and license details are available at the bottom of this page.

Built on Spice of Life: Apple Pie Edition, Warly Edition gives you more reasons to enjoy a varied menu. Discover foods for lasting health rewards, keep your recent meals varied for extra benefits, and turn familiar dishes into something new with seasoning powders and accompaniments. This is a separate project with its own food values, flavor tracking, rewards, and seasoning mechanics.

Good Food, Two Kinds of Progress

  • Culinary Experience rewards discovery. The first eligible flavor you taste of a food earns its full base value; another new flavor of the same food earns half that value. Plain food counts as a flavor, too. By default, milestones increase your maximum health.
  • Diversity follows your recent meals. Both their contributions and the variety of foods matter. Its benefits change with your diet, so keeping several dishes on the menu pays off. Different flavors help, though less than trying an entirely different food.
  • Nutrition and preparation influence a food’s value. More involved meals can contribute more, and pack makers can adjust individual values and rewards.

Season, Mix, and Serve

Use the Spice Grinding Mill to turn ingredients into seasoning powders, then craft a powder together with a serving of food. Different seasonings offer different benefits, including potion effects, which appear in the food’s tooltip.

  • Mix powders to combine their effects. Repeating an ingredient can strengthen an effect or make it last longer.
  • Add accompaniments, such as supported cooked rice, directly to a dish for extra nutrition and effects.
  • Try new flavors without chasing every combination. For each food, mixed powders share one mixed flavor for dietary tracking, and two or more accompaniment servings share one combined-accompaniment flavor.

By default, a dish accepts one powder application or up to two accompaniment servings. The limits, mixed-powder ingredient count, and whether powders and accompaniments can share a dish are configurable. Divide placeable feasts into edible servings before seasoning them.

The mill works through right-clicking and automation. Sneak-right-click with a powder to bind its recipes; a rotating preview shows the product and ingredients. It supports one- and two-input recipes, and redstone puts an unbound mill into single-input operation. Returned containers go into suitable storage below when possible.

Your Food Book and a Packed Lunch

Craft a Food Book with a book and a carrot to check your Culinary Experience, Diversity, daily food interests, and tasted or untasted foods. Both reward tracks share one page; hover over their lines and markers to see your score, rewards, and next target.

Select an eaten food to see the flavors you still have to try. Foods with every available flavor tasted move into their own list.

Take your menu along in a Lunchbag (5 slots), Lunchbox (9 slots), or Golden Lunchbox (14 slots). Sneak-right-click to open one, or use it normally to eat the available food predicted to leave you with the highest Diversity. Upgrading preserves the contents.

A Changing Appetite

At sunrise, the server chooses foods that players crave and foods they find boring. Recent eating habits influence the selection, with some randomness to keep things interesting.

Craved foods contribute more to Diversity; boring foods contribute less. Check the Food Book or a food’s tooltip before choosing your next meal. These interests do not change Culinary Experience or contributions already recorded.

Optional Warly Mode

Want a stronger reason to change your menu? Warly Mode is disabled by default and can be enabled globally or for individual players by an administrator.

Repeatedly eating the same dish within two in-game days restores progressively less hunger and saturation, takes longer, and contributes less Diversity. Different seasonings share the same repetition history. Each non-exempt serving restarts the timer; leave that dish alone until it expires to start fresh.

Craved foods are exempt: they neither add repetitions nor restart the timer. Sleep advances it, while /time add does not. Culinary Experience remains unaffected.

Getting Started

  1. Make a Food Book and try a few different foods.
  2. Build a Spice Grinding Mill and explore the seasonings available in your pack.
  3. Craft a powder or accompaniment together with a serving of food, then enjoy the new flavor.
  4. Pack a lunch container to keep several meal choices within reach.

JEI shows grinding and mixed-powder recipes in all three versions. Minecraft 1.20.1 and 1.21.1 also support EMI.

Make It Your Own

Settings in config/solwarly/ let you adjust food values, rewards, recent-meal tracking, daily interests, Warly Mode, seasoning effects, and application limits. Configuration descriptions are provided in English and Chinese.

Pack makers can add custom seasonings and accompaniments through JSON, including localized names, food prefixes and suffixes, tooltip text, colors, nutrition where applicable, and potion effects. The generated examples in custom_spices/ and custom_accompaniments/ provide a starting point.

Versions and Integrations

Other food mods can bring more flavors to your kitchen. Expand a version below to see how many seasoning types each integration adds, including powders, ready-to-use seasonings, and accompaniments. Each type counts once, regardless of its recipes or mixtures. A “+” means both mods are needed.
