Requirements
- On Fabric you need Fabric API. On Forge or NeoForge you do not.
- One jar for both sides. In singleplayer, install it in the client only; the built-in server uses the same jar. On a multiplayer server, install it on the server too.
- Players without the mod still get a plain vanilla title when they enter a structure. On a server that does not have the mod, there are no titles at all, even for players who have it.
- Languages: English and German. German shows for players who have the mod installed; vanilla clients without the mod see English.
What it does
- Walking into a tracked structure, such as a desert pyramid or a shipwreck, shows its name once per player per structure instance.
- When two tracked structures overlap, the tightest one wins, so a small site is never swallowed by a larger one around it.
- With the mod installed, you get a styled overlay near the top of the screen with small icons, instead of a plain vanilla title.
- Icons hint at what is inside: unopened loot, whether it has already been looted, traps, spawners, hidden containers, nearby monsters (an ocean ruin lists drowned, for example), redstone, the biome, and archaeology finds. Each hint can be turned off on its own.
- The loot, looted and hidden-container counts are live: a container drops out once it is opened, and a hidden one drops out once digging frees one of its six sides. The counts survive a server restart.
- If another VanillaTales mod already gave the place its own name, like Ghost Crews naming a shipwreck, that name becomes the title, and the structure type becomes the subtitle.
- If Traveler's Titles is also installed, this overlay drops its icon detail lines and shows just the title, instead of drawing two overlays on top of each other.
Configuration
Server file wayfarers_landmarks.json:
| Field | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
showAgainAfterMinutes |
0 |
Minutes before a structure can show its title again to the same player; 0 means never again. |
lootHint, lootedHint, trapsHint, spawnersHint, biomeHint, monstersHint, redstoneHint, hiddenContainersHint, archaeologyHint |
true |
Turns each hint on or off. |
Client file wayfarers_landmarks_hud.json controls the overlay itself: position, title and subtitle size and color, fade and hold time, icon size, and the same set of hints for what to draw.
A config file with a syntax error is left untouched: the mod logs the problem and keeps the last working settings instead of overwriting the file with defaults.
The tag wayfarers_landmarks:titled lists which structures get a title: most vanilla structures except mineshafts, buried treasure and nether fossils, plus built-in entries for structures from YUNG's mods, ChoiceTheorem's Overhauled Village and Repurposed Structures, so those get titles too if you have them installed. The tag can be extended for other modded structures.
Good to know
- This is the only VanillaTales mod with a client part; the other eight are server-side only.
- If Traveler's Titles is also installed, this overlay shows only the title, without its icon detail lines.
Part of VanillaTales
Wayfarer's Landmarks is part of VanillaTales, a collection of small, independent mods that add little stories to vanilla content. Each mod works on its own; install only the ones you want.
- Zombie Sieges: turns a vanilla zombie siege into a real event, with a ringing bell, a boss bar and two waves of zombies.
- Sherd Stories: gives every decorated pot a title and the story of where its sherds were found.
- Ghost Crews: gives every shipwreck a name and a crew of drowned that guard it until it is looted clean.
- Illager Scouts: a pillager scout watches your village and warns you two days before a patrol arrives.
- Occupied Villages: some new villages spawn already occupied by an illager garrison you can liberate.
- Bonded Pairs: binds two mobs from the same spawn group into a pair that avenges each other.
- Golem Patrol: gives iron golems a daily patrol, a night watch and an escort for villagers.
- Raid Aftermath: villagers repair the damage a raid or an explosion left in the village.
