Wandering Traveler

Turn exploring into an adventure. Every new biome and dimension announces itself with a stylish RPG-style title, drawn as hand made 3D art rather than plain text. 67 vanilla titles included, modded biomes supported, no resource pack needed.

Description

Every biome you walk into announces itself, in letters cut from the blocks that place is actually made of. Sculk for the Deep Dark. Cherry wood and blossom for a Cherry Grove. Banded terracotta for the Eroded Badlands.

67 of them are drawn by hand and live inside the mod. There is no companion pack to fetch, nothing to switch on, and no biome that gets left without a title.

Made of the place they name

This is the part that took the longest, so here is a look at a few.

Lush Caves is moss and azalea, lit along its edges by glow berries. Warm Ocean runs its edge through all five corals, in the order they sit on the color wheel. The Nether stacks netherrack into nether brick with lava burning underneath, so the letters glow from below. Soul Sand Valley burns soul fire instead, and picks out its edges in bone. Mushroom Fields is a red cap with white spots over pale mushroom stem, standing on a crust of mycelium.

55 of them are Overworld biomes, 5 are in the Nether, 4 are in the End, and the three dimensions have titles of their own.

Every biome, not only the drawn ones

A biome with no artwork still gets a title, taken from its own name, so modded and datapack biomes work the moment you install them. Nothing is ever missing, nothing shows up as a raw id, and you will never see a question mark where a place name should be. New artwork only ever upgrades a title you were seeing anyway.

One crossing, one title

Biome borders are messy places, and a mod like this can very easily turn them into a slideshow. This one is built not to.

  • Crossing a run of borders in a few seconds gets you the first title and the one you ended up in. The ones in between are dropped rather than saved up to play at you afterwards
  • Doubling back into the biome you just left does nothing at all, because a title never follows itself
  • Underground, the biome above your head is not the one you are standing in, so surface biomes are skipped. Lush Caves, Dripstone Caves and the Deep Dark still get their titles
  • Elytra flight can hold everything until you land, and then name the place you landed in

Make it yours

Most people will never open the settings, and the mod is built on the assumption that they will not. If you do, there are 25 of them behind a config screen you can reach straight from the mods list.

Category Settings
Size Three sliders, so long names can sit smaller than short ones
Position Nine places on the screen, each already clear of the hotbar and the crosshair
Timing Fade in, time on screen, fade out, and the gap between two titles
Plain text Its own size, color and shadow, with the shadow matched to the color for you
Repeats Every crossing, only new places, or never twice in a row
Never show A list of biomes to skip entirely

Every one of them has a reset button, so nothing you change is hard to undo.

Add your own

Two files in a resource pack will give any biome a title, including one from a mod that has none. No code, nothing to register, and no permission to ask for.

Titles merge across packs rather than replacing each other, so a pack only has to carry the biomes it cares about, and two packs covering different ground will happily sit side by side.

Compatibility

Client side, so a server neither needs it nor knows it is there. Realms and servers you do not own are fine.

There are no mixins anywhere in the mod, which means it never reaches into Minecraft or into anything else you have installed.

Mod Fabric NeoForge
Fabric API Required n/a
Cloth Config Required Required
Mod Menu Optional n/a

Mod Menu only adds the Config button on Fabric. NeoForge already has one of its own.

Quilt should work, though it has not been tested.

Common questions

Does it work in an existing world? Yes. Nothing about it touches world generation or saved data, so an old world is as good as a new one.

Do modded biomes work? Yes, straight away, as readable text. Give any of them a hand drawn title with a resource pack.

Does it work on a server? Yes, and only you need it, because it is client side.

Does it work with shaders? Yes. Titles are drawn as part of the interface rather than the world, so a shaderpack does not touch them.

Can I use it in a modpack? Yes, and there is no need to ask.

Credits

An original mod, not a fork or a port of anything.
