Description

FishFry

FishFry is a TBC Anniversary fishing addon by GildedVellum, built for players who want fishing to feel cleaner, smarter, and less like fighting the default UI.

It brings the usual fishing-addon conveniences together with a full fishing + fish-cooking guide, tackle management, milestone tracking, current-zone info, and a compact HUD designed around manual play.

FishFry does not fish for you. It does not cook for you. It does not buy things, loot things, or play the game for you.

It gives you better tools, better information, and better control while keeping every gameplay action in your hands.

Fishing Addon Basics, Covered

FishFry includes the kind of quality-of-life tools players expect from a strong fishing addon:

  • Compact fishing HUD
  • Manual Cast Fishing button
  • Optional double-right-click casting near fishable water
  • Find Fish helper
  • Lure and fishing consumable support
  • Fishing sound helper options
  • Auto-loot while fishing option
  • Fishing cast timer with warning pulses
  • Keybind support for major FishFry actions
  • HUD shape, scale, lock, visibility, and layout options
  • Character-specific or shared settings memory

What FishFry Expands On

FishFry covers the expected fishing-addon basics, but it also pushes further into territory most fishing addons leave to spreadsheets, memory, or separate tools:

  • Fishing + Cooking together — FishFry treats fish-cooking as part of the fishing journey, not an unrelated profession window.
  • Route-aware progression — the guide looks at your faction, zone, base Fishing skill, Cooking skill, inventory, and route state to keep the next step readable.
  • Milestone-based goals — progress is broken into searchable, pinnable goals instead of one long wall of instructions.
  • Current-zone context — Zone Info gives conservative fish data, zone notes, timing notes, and relevant current-zone goals without pretending uncertain data is confirmed.
  • Effective Fishing clarity — the HUD shows your active Fishing setup, while tooltips explain bonuses and best available setup possibilities.
  • Flexible gear workflow — use FishFry’s built-in Tackle Swap, Outfitter, ItemRack, or manual gear management without being forced into one system.
  • Per-character control — FishFry settings can be shared or saved per character, with copy-from-character support for faster setup.
  • Manual-first safety — helper buttons stay player-triggered, combat-aware, and intentionally limited instead of drifting into automation. The goal is simple: keep your fishing tools close, readable, and easy to use without turning the addon into a giant control panel.

Tackle, Gear, and Effective Fishing

FishFry helps you understand and manage your fishing setup.

It can track fishing poles, lures, fishing gear, selected consumables, glove enchants, fishing lines, and other useful bonuses where the TBC client exposes enough information.

FishFry also supports multiple gear-management styles:

  • Use FishFry’s built-in Tackle Swap
  • Use Outfitter
  • Use ItemRack
  • Use your own manual gear setup

FishFry’s built-in swapper is intentionally basic and convenient. If you already use Outfitter or ItemRack, those remain the stronger full gearset tools. FishFry is designed to work alongside that choice instead of forcing one workflow.

The HUD Effective Fishing readout shows your current active setup, while tooltips can help explain active bonuses and best available setup possibilities.

Fishing + Fish-Cooking Guide

FishFry is not just a cast button addon.

It includes a route-focused fishing and fish-cooking guide built to help smooth out two professions that can be awkward to level together.

The guide can account for:

  • Faction
  • Current zone
  • Base Fishing skill
  • Cooking skill
  • Inventory
  • Known recipes
  • Fish needed for upcoming cooking steps
  • Route state and progression

FishFry also includes a milestone Journal with hundreds of built-in goals covering fishing progress, cooking progress, recipe/vendor goals, optional objectives, rare catches, and trophy fish.

The point is not just to tell you where to go. The point is to make the grind feel readable, trackable, and a little more social and fun.

Cook Fish

The Cook Fish tools focus only on fish-related cooking.

FishFry can show:

  • Raw fish in your bags
  • Cooked result
  • Known recipe status
  • Required ingredients
  • Missing ingredients
  • Possible crafts
  • Recipe scan status
  • Fish-related utility recipes such as Captain Rumsey’s Lager

FishFry may ask for an extra click when it has to open or scan the Cooking window first. This is intentional. It avoids delayed protected-action behavior and keeps cooking player-triggered and safer under WoW’s addon rules.

Current Zone Info

FishFry includes current-zone fishing information so you can quickly see what the addon knows about the area you are standing in.

Zone Info is intentionally conservative.

That means FishFry would rather under-list a zone than confidently tell you a fish exists somewhere it does not. Some edge cases may remain incomplete until confirmed through source data or tester reports.

This is especially true for rare catches, trophy fish, and weighted-style fish. FishFry keeps those conservative until the data is solid.

Customization and Control

FishFry is built around user preference.

You can adjust HUD shape, layout, lock state, scale, visibility behavior, action buttons, sound helper behavior, auto-loot behavior while fishing, and whether FishFry settings are shared across characters or saved per character.

If you prefer one setup across your whole account, use shared settings.

If each character has different gear tools, HUD placement, sound preferences, or fishing workflows, use character-specific settings.

You can also copy settings from another saved character to get close quickly, then tweak from there.

What FishFry Does Not Do

FishFry is a manual-play addon.

It does not:

  • Auto-fish
  • Auto-loot by itself outside the enabled fishing-helper window
  • Auto-cook
  • Auto-buy
  • Bot
  • Play the game for you
  • Replace full gearset addons like Outfitter or ItemRack
  • Try to become a full Cooking profession addon

FishFry is here to help you make better decisions faster, not to remove the player from the game.

GildedVellum Design Philosophy

GildedVellum addons are built around a few simple standards:

  • Respect the player’s control
  • Keep useful information close to the action
  • Make common workflows easier without hiding what is happening
  • Prefer clear UI state over chat spam
  • Avoid bloated settings panels
  • Avoid automation-first design
  • Be honest about limitations
  • Build tools that feel polished, compact, and practical

FishFry follows that philosophy closely.

It is meant to feel like a handcrafted utility addon: readable, useful, configurable, and focused on making a specific part of the game feel better.

Known Limitations

FishFry is built for TBC Anniversary / Classic TBC.

Zone Info is conservative and may under-list some zones until fish data is confirmed through source data or tester reports.

Fishing gear, lure, enchant, consumable, recipe, and tooltip detection depends on what the TBC client exposes through item, equipment, profession, and tooltip APIs.

Secure buttons and manual action helpers follow WoW addon restrictions, especially around combat and protected actions.

FishFry focuses on fishing and fish-related cooking. It is not intended to cover the full Cooking profession.

Feedback and Testing

Feedback is welcome, especially for:

  • Missing or incorrect zone fish data
  • Recipe detection issues
  • Tackle or Effective Fishing oddities
  • Tooltip confusion
  • UI overlap or layout problems
  • Lua errors
  • Edge cases with Outfitter, ItemRack, or manual gear setups

When reporting an issue, please include:

  • FishFry version
  • Character level, faction, and zone
  • Fishing and Cooking skill
  • Relevant gear, lure, consumable, or recipe
  • What you clicked
  • What happened
  • What you expected
  • Full Lua error text, if one appeared

Known Issues:

  • Water-Beaten Journal (Find Fish book) still shown in mouse-over tooltip for Find Fish button even when you already know it. (most likely removing this entirely from the tooltip in 1.0.1)

FishFry TBC is NOT a continuation of some other project. It was hand crafted from the ground up by GildedVellum
