Description

FishFry Forever support is here!

FishFry Forever development is ongoing. Most features are functional, and the new starting zone is next up! Stay tuned!

(Please keep in mind Blizzard has not fixed their SavedVariables bug and so a lot of addons are suffering due to this right now. Settings are not saving, Milestones are not being remembered, etc. However! I have some temporary scaffolding in to work around this issue in the beta. It should now at least save most if not all actual settings and positionings. It currently does not keep your fish count/milestone progress presently as it is yoo much info for the workaround to handle)

FishFry

FishFry is a TBC Anniversary fishing + fish-cooking addon by GildedVellum.

It is built for players who want Fishing to feel cleaner, smarter, easier to follow, and less like fighting the default UI.

FishFry combines the conveniences expected from a dedicated fishing addon with a full Fishing + fish-cooking guide, tackle management, Effective Fishing information, current-zone data, milestone tracking, recipe assistance, endgame goals, route guidance, waypoint integration, and a compact configurable HUD.

FishFry does not fish for you.

It gives you better tools, better information, and better control while keeping every gameplay action in your hands.

Fishing HUD and Everyday Tools

FishFry includes a compact fishing HUD designed to keep the things you actually use close to the action.

Features include:

  • Manual Cast Fishing button
  • Optional double-right-click casting near fishable water
  • Smarter recasting that avoids interfering with catches and other right-click interactions
  • Fishing cast timer with warning pulses
  • Find Fish helper and tracking state
  • Lure and Fishing consumable support
  • Lowest-count-first consumable use where appropriate
  • Fishing sound helper options
  • Optional auto-loot behavior while fishing
  • Keybind support for major FishFry actions
  • Configurable HUD shape, layout, scale, lock state, visibility, and action buttons
  • Shared or character-specific settings
  • Copy-from-character settings support

The HUD is meant to stay compact and useful rather than becoming another giant profession window.

Fishing + Fish-Cooking Guide

FishFry treats Fishing and fish-based Cooking as one connected journey.

The Guide can account for:

  • Faction
  • Current zone
  • Base Fishing skill
  • Cooking skill
  • Inventory
  • Known recipes
  • Fish needed for upcoming Cooking steps
  • Route state and progression

The Guide includes dedicated Current and All views.

Current keeps your recommended next step front and center.

All lets you browse the complete route and expand any step without changing your current recommendation.

Expanded steps can include full instructions, important fish, recipes, vendors, trainers, NPC locations, route notes, and coordinates.

FishFry also provides selectable coordinate support for:

  • TomTom
  • HandyNotes
  • Plain coordinates for players using neither addon

That means you can inspect future or previous route steps, find a vendor, check which recipe you need, or send yourself a waypoint without disrupting the step FishFry currently recommends.

Guide steps are written to call out important recipe purchases and route dependencies directly rather than expecting you to discover them from an icon or tooltip.

The point is not merely to tell you where to go. It is to make the Fishing + Cooking route understandable enough that you know why you are there and what you should accomplish before moving on.

Master Angler & Cook

FishFry remains useful after the leveling route is finished.

When a character reaches 375 Fishing and 375 Cooking, the Guide transitions into the permanent Master Angler & Cook endgame section instead of leaving you parked on the final leveling step.

Master Angler & Cook includes dedicated:

  • Dailies
  • Recipes
  • Goals

sections covering things such as Fishing and Cooking dailies, missing fish recipes, recipe vendors, tackle upgrades, rare catches, trophy fish, collection objectives, and other pinnable endgame goals.

FishFry is designed for players who want something to chase after both profession bars are full.

Journal, Milestones, and Goals

FishFry includes a searchable milestone Journal with hundreds of built-in Fishing and Cooking goals.

Milestones cover Fishing progression, Cooking progression, profession ranks, recipes, vendors, route objectives, rare catches, trophy fish, optional accomplishments, and endgame collection goals.

Milestones can be searched, filtered, reviewed, and pinned.

Profession milestones remain separated appropriately between Fishing and Cooking so the Journal can be used as an actual completion tool rather than one giant mixed checklist.

The idea is to make Fishing feel like something with visible progress and long-term goals instead of a profession bar you forget about at cap.

Tackle Swap and Fishing Gear

FishFry helps manage and understand your Fishing setup.

It can work with Fishing poles, Fishing gear, lures, consumables, glove enchants, Fishing lines, and other useful bonuses where the TBC client exposes enough information.

FishFry supports several equipment workflows:

  • FishFry Built-In Tackle Swap
  • Outfitter
  • ItemRack
  • Fully manual gear management

FishFry's built-in Tackle Swap is intentionally simple and convenient.

If you already use Outfitter or ItemRack, those remain the stronger full gearset tools. FishFry is designed to work alongside them rather than force you into its own gear manager.

Tackle Swap checks whether equipment is actually usable by the character and skips gear whose real requirements are not met rather than relying on unreliable usability results from the client.

The Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat remains a manual-use option rather than something FishFry silently selects for you.

Effective Fishing

FishFry helps explain the Fishing skill you are actually using.

The HUD's Effective Fishing value represents your current active setup, not a hypothetical projection based on the best lure sitting somewhere in your bags.

Supporting tooltips can explain bonuses from relevant sources such as:

  • Equipped Fishing pole
  • Fishing gear
  • Active lure
  • Fishing lines
  • Glove enchants
  • Other supported Fishing bonuses

FishFry can still help you understand better available options without pretending those bonuses are currently active.

Lures and Fishing Consumables

FishFry can help manage the lures and Fishing consumables you already carry.

Where multiple supported consumables are available, FishFry can prefer the stack with the lowest remaining count first, helping clear partial stacks instead of leaving small piles scattered through your bags.

Consumable use remains player-triggered.

FishFry does not automatically apply or purchase consumables for you.

Find Fish

FishFry includes a dedicated Find Fish helper.

When Find Fish is available, the HUD reflects whether tracking is currently enabled and gives you direct control over it.

If your character does not yet know Find Fish, the control can explain how the ability is learned rather than pretending the feature is available.

FishFry also provides corrected guidance for the Weather-Beaten Journal, including the distinction between obtaining the journal and actually learning Find Fish.

Cook Fish

The Cook Fish tools focus specifically on fish-related Cooking rather than trying to replace the full Cooking profession UI.

FishFry can show:

  • Raw fish currently in your bags
  • Cooked result
  • Known recipe status
  • Required ingredients
  • Missing ingredients
  • Possible crafts
  • Recipe scan status
  • Fish-related utility recipes such as Captain Rumsey's Lager

FishFry can still show relevant raw fish when you do not yet know the corresponding recipe and can distinguish between not knowing the recipe and not yet meeting its requirements.

Some Cooking information requires FishFry to inspect the Cooking window first. When that happens, FishFry may require an additional player click rather than attempting delayed protected actions behind the scenes.

Current Zone Info

FishFry includes current-zone Fishing information so you can quickly see what the addon knows about the area you are standing in.

Zone Info can provide relevant fish, Fishing notes, timing information, local objectives, and other useful context.

Zone data is intentionally conservative.

FishFry would rather under-list an edge case than confidently tell you a fish exists somewhere it does not. Where source data or tester confirmation is incomplete, FishFry avoids presenting speculation as fact.

Route and Waypoint Support

FishFry includes expanded coordinates throughout the Guide and Zone Info.

Coordinates can be used as:

  • TomTom waypoints
  • HandyNotes pins
  • Plain coordinates

TomTom and HandyNotes integration is optional.

Players using neither addon still receive the same underlying location information.

FishFry uses coordinates to support the route rather than requiring another addon just to understand where an NPC, vendor, trainer, or objective is located.

Customization and Character Settings

FishFry is built around user preference.

You can adjust things such as HUD layout, shape, lock state, scale, visibility behavior, action buttons, sound-helper behavior, Fishing auto-loot behavior, and other workflow options.

Settings can be shared across your account or stored separately for individual characters.

If every character uses the same Fishing setup, shared settings keep things simple.

If different characters use different gear addons, HUD positions, sound preferences, or Fishing workflows, character-specific settings keep those setups independent.

Saved character settings can also be copied to another character as a starting point.

Manual-First Design

FishFry is a manual-play addon.

It does not:

  • Auto-fish
  • Auto-cast without a player action
  • Auto-cook
  • Auto-buy
  • Automatically use Fishing equipment or consumables without player input
  • Bot
  • Play the game for you
  • Replace full gearset addons such as Outfitter or ItemRack
  • Try to become a general-purpose Cooking addon

Optional Fishing auto-loot behavior is limited to the Fishing helper workflow and is designed to restore the player's previous auto-loot preference afterward.

FishFry is here to help you make better decisions and perform common Fishing tasks more comfortably, not to remove the player from the game.

GildedVellum Design Philosophy

GildedVellum addons are built around a few simple standards:

  • Respect the player's control
  • Keep useful information close to the action
  • Make common workflows easier without hiding what is happening
  • Prefer visible UI state and useful tooltips over chat spam
  • Keep controls compact and readable
  • Avoid bloated settings panels
  • Avoid automation-first design
  • Be honest about limitations
  • Build tools that feel polished, practical, and deliberate

FishFry follows that philosophy closely.

It is meant to feel like a handcrafted Fishing utility rather than a pile of disconnected features.

Feedback and Testing

Feedback is especially useful for:

  • Missing or incorrect zone fish data
  • Route or guide inaccuracies
  • Recipe detection issues
  • Tackle Swap behavior
  • Effective Fishing calculations
  • Find Fish or Weather-Beaten Journal behavior
  • TomTom or HandyNotes integration
  • Tooltip confusion
  • HUD overlap or layout problems
  • Lua errors
  • Outfitter or ItemRack edge cases
  • Unusual gear, lure, consumable, or recipe interactions

When reporting an issue, please include the FishFry version, character level and faction, current zone, Fishing and Cooking skill, relevant gear or recipe, what you clicked, what happened, what you expected, and the full Lua error if one appeared.

FishFry TBC is NOT a continuation of another project. It was handcrafted from the ground up by GildedVellum with a love for making Fishing enjoyable in every game.
