Torch Burn Slider

How fast a lit torch burns down, on one slider from 0x to 5x. 1x is the normal game: 30 minutes for a new torch. 0.5x gives 60 minutes, 2x gives 15, 0x never burns down. Change it live in Esc > MODS with Mod Menu, or in config.txt. Host or solo only.

Description

Pick how long a lit torch lasts.

One slider, 0x to 5x, changed live from Mod Menu. 1x is the normal game: 30 minutes for a new torch. 0.5x gives you 60 minutes, 0x never burns down.

A lit torch in your hand loses 1 durability every second. A new torch has 1,800, so you get 30 minutes of light out of it. I wanted to pick that myself: a torch that lasts a long trip, or one that burns out fast when I want the dark to matter. So the burn gets one slider, and you can move it while you play. Going back to normal is one click, no restart.

The slider

  • Torch burn (0x to 5x, steps of 0.1): how fast a lit torch in your hand burns down.

What a new torch gives you:

  • 0x: it never burns down.
  • 0.5x: 60 minutes.
  • 1x: 30 minutes, the normal game.
  • 2x: 15 minutes.

Spare torches in your backpack and all other items are left alone. A torch you have put away does not burn, same as in the normal game.

How it works

The torch has its own burn timer: 1 point every second while it is lit in your hand. The mod looks at your torches twice a second. When the lit one has burned a point, it gives the point back or takes an extra one, using the game's own way of changing an item's durability. At 0x every point comes back, at 0.5x every second one, and at 2x one more is taken for each point burned. The torch stays in your hand the whole time and the flame does not flicker.

Measured in game with a lit torch, standing still:

  • 1x: 60 points in 60 seconds.
  • 0.5x: 30 points in 60 seconds.
  • 2x: 120 points in 60 seconds.
  • 0x: 0 points in 60 seconds.
  • 0.3x: 30 points in 100 seconds.
  • Green torch and Blue torch at 0.5x: 20 points in 40 seconds each.
  • Everything else: a spare torch, a spare Green torch and a logging axe in the backpack did not change during the whole test.

Settings

All live in Mod Menu (Esc > MODS > Torch Burn Slider), or in config.txt in the mod folder (restart the game after editing it).

  • Torch Burn Slider on (default on): off puts torch burn back to normal.
  • Torch burn (default 1x, 0x to 5x, steps of 0.1).
  • Show a message on change (default on): a short note on screen after you close Mod Menu, showing what is set.
  • Detailed log (default off): extra lines in UE4SS.log for troubleshooting.

Install

  1. Install UE4SS for RSDragonwilds (free, from the UE4SS for RSDragonwilds page on Nexus Mods).
  2. Drop the TorchBurnSlider folder into RSDragonwilds/Binaries/Win64/ue4ss/Mods/
  3. For the in-game slider, also install Mod Menu and open Esc > MODS > Torch Burn Slider. Without it, every setting is in config.txt inside the mod folder.

On Game Pass: use the BE version of UE4SS with the SCO signature, the normal build does not load there. Game Pass also installs the game under Binaries/WinGDK/ instead of Binaries/Win64/, so the TorchBurnSlider folder goes in RSDragonwilds/Binaries/WinGDK/ue4ss/Mods/. If you install with Vortex, check that is where it ended up.

To uninstall, delete the TorchBurnSlider folder. Your torches keep the durability they have and burn at the normal speed again.

Dedicated servers

  • Install it on the server. Torch Burn Slider works on a dedicated server when it is installed on the server. The server needs UE4SS running on it.
  • No menu on a server. Set the value in config.txt in the TorchBurnSlider folder on the server. Changes are picked up in about 10 seconds, no restart.
  • One setting for everyone. It then applies to every player's torches on the server, shortly after they join. A copy on a player's own PC does nothing on a server.
  • Solo and hosting from inside the game work as before, with the Mod Menu sliders as usual.
  • Tested on the Windows dedicated server.

Good to know

  • Changes apply at once. Close Mod Menu and a short note shows what is set. You can turn that note off.
  • Back to normal any time. Set 1x or turn the mod off in Mod Menu and a torch burns normally again. Measured: 60 points in 60 seconds, same as before.
  • Colored torches. The mod picks up the colored torches by name, the same way as the plain one. Green and Blue are the ones I tested. Purple, Red and Yellow are not tested yet.
  • A point or two off. Right after you take the torch out, or while a menu is open, the count can be off by a point or two.
  • Above 1x. The game destroys a torch that reaches 0, with or without this mod. Above 1x that just comes sooner.
  • Nothing extra is saved. The mod only changes the torch's own durability number, the one the game saves anyway. It stores nothing of its own.
  • Tools, weapons and armor. Those are a separate mod: Durability Sliders. This mod does not need it, and that one does not change a lit torch. Both were installed together in my torch test.
  • Co-op: in a world hosted from inside the game it only works for the host's own torches. Guests can have it installed; it does nothing on their side. On a dedicated server it goes on the server, see Dedicated servers above.
  • Not sure it is running? UE4SS.log shows lines starting with [TorchBurnSlider].

Tested on RuneScape: Dragonwilds 1.0 on Steam with UE4SS 3.0.1, solo, on a test character: a lit torch timed standing still at 1x, 0x, 0.5x, 2x and 0.3x, a Green and a Blue torch at 0.5x, a torch put away, back to 1x and switched off, a Green torch burned down to nothing at 2x, and spare torches and an axe in the backpack checked the whole time. Durability Sliders was installed at the same time. The slider was changed through Mod Menu every time. Not tested yet: player-hosted co-op, controller, Game Pass, the Purple, Red and Yellow torches, and dying and respawning.
