Buried Relics
Six ruined dig sites hidden across your world. Brush the suspicious sand and gravel, open the buried chest and collect all six.
Buried Relics adds six archaeology dig sites and weathered ruins to newly generated Java survival worlds, where players brush suspicious sand and gravel and open buried chests for loot.
A free datapack for Minecraft Java 1.21.4 to 1.21.11. No mods and no plugins, so it works in single-player, on Realms and on vanilla, Paper, Purpur and Fabric servers. Tested on Paper 1.21.4 and Paper 1.21.11.
The six sites
| Site |
Where |

| Sunken Obelisk |
Desert |
A leaning sandstone obelisk with orange and blue terracotta inlay on a paved dig floor, and a half-collapsed side chamber with the chest |
| Frostbound Hearth |
Snowy plains, snowy taiga, groves, taiga |
A collapsed spruce cabin with its cobblestone chimney still standing, packed ice and snow inside, and a chest by the cold hearth |
| Mire Shrine |
Swamps, mangrove swamps |
A mud brick shrine with a broken roof on a packed mud platform, dark oak posts and moss |
| Overgrown Altar |
Jungles |
A stepped mossy stone brick altar with a stair up the front and an offering chest on the top step |
| Prospector's Dig |
Badlands |
A terracotta-walled dig pit with a dark oak mine entrance, rails, a ladder and a supply chest |
Features
- Something to brush at every site: five suspicious sand or gravel blocks per site, each with themed loot and a low chance of vanilla pottery sherds
- A buried chest at every site with 5 to 8 stacks of themed loot such as food, arrows, iron, gold, emeralds, leather, torches, a compass or a map
- Rare finds: every chest can also hold a brush, a rare enchanted book or a rare armor trim template (Sentry, Dune, Wayfinder, Shaper, Wild or Raiser)
- Balanced for survival: no netherite, elytra, totems, diamonds, enchanted golden apples or spawn eggs
- No two alike: stone bricks go mossy or cracked, cobblestone gets moss and planks go missing as each ruin generates, and sites face a random direction
- Fits the land: sites flatten the ground around them a little so they sit well on slopes and near rivers
- Relic Hunter advancement tab: one advancement per site and "Six Feet Under" for finding all six
- Light: no functions and nothing running in the background, only world generation
Install
New single-player world (best)
- Click Create New World > More > Data Packs.
- Drag
BuriedRelics-1.0.0.zip in and move it to Selected.
- Keep Generate Structures on and create the world.
Existing single-player world
- Click your world, then Edit > Open World Folder.
- Put
BuriedRelics-1.0.0.zip in the datapacks folder. Don't unzip it.
- Load the world. Sites appear in land you haven't explored yet.
Servers (vanilla, Paper, Purpur, Fabric)
- Put
BuriedRelics-1.0.0.zip in world/datapacks. Don't unzip it.
- Check
generate-structures=true in server.properties.
- Restart the server.
/reload is not enough for new structures.
Realms
Make a new single-player world with the datapack, then upload it to your Realm. Uploading replaces the Realm's current world, so download a backup first.
Requirements
- Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.4 to 1.21.11
- Generate Structures on
- No mods, no plugins, no resource pack. Players join with a normal game.
Good to know
- New chunks only. Land you have already explored stays as it is. Start a new world or travel somewhere new.
- Structures must be on. With
generate-structures=false or on superflat worlds, no sites appear.
- How often: each kind of site gets one chance to appear in every area of about 30 by 30 chunks, when that spot is in one of its biomes.
- Finding them: operators can use
/locate structure buried_relics:watchtower (or obelisk, hearth, shrine, altar, camp).
- Brush, don't break. Breaking a suspicious block with a tool destroys its item.
- Trees and snow are added after a site is placed, so jungle and taiga sites can be partly hidden by leaves.
- Other structure packs: every site uses its own placement, so they don't stack on top of each other.
- Removing it: ruins already built stay as normal blocks. Nothing breaks.
