Codex of Azerothian Expressions

Browse, perform, favorite, and create World of Warcraft emotes in an illustrated fantasy codex with powerful search, category filters, recent history, detailed command information, custom roleplay expressions, previews, icons, and macro export.

**Codex of Azerothian Expressions**

A searchable and illustrated book of World of Warcraft emotes, favorites, recent expressions, and custom roleplay actions.

Browse the emote catalog, inspect commands and aliases, perform expressions with a single click, or create your own custom expressions without having to remember every slash command.

**Overview**

Codex of Azerothian Expressions replaces the need to manually search for or type World of Warcraft emote commands.

The addon presents the available expressions inside an illustrated fantasy book interface. Standard emotes are organized into categories and displayed as clickable catalog entries. Each entry provides additional information such as its command, aliases, category, description, and supported properties.

Expressions can be performed directly from the codex, added to Favorites, reviewed through the Recent section, or used as the foundation for your own custom roleplay expressions.

**The Emote Catalog**

The catalog displays standard World of Warcraft emotes in a two-column book layout. Eighteen expressions are shown on each page.

Use the mouse wheel while hovering over the catalog to move between pages.

The catalog can be filtered through the following categories:

  • All
  • Greetings
  • Reactions
  • Emotions
  • Social
  • Actions
  • Taunts
  • Voice
  • Special

The search field always searches the complete standard catalog. Results may match an expression name, its primary slash command, or one of its known aliases.

**Expression Details**

Selecting an expression opens its detail page on the right side of the book.

The detail page may show:

  • Expression name
  • Illustrated expression artwork
  • Primary slash command
  • Known command aliases
  • Assigned category
  • Expression description
  • Animation availability
  • Target-aware behavior
  • Voice behavior
  • Mount restrictions
  • Faction restrictions

The Perform button executes the selected expression without requiring the command to be entered manually.

**Command Copying**

The primary slash command is displayed inside a read-only command field.

Press the Copy button to select the command, then use Ctrl+C to copy it.

World of Warcraft does not allow addons to write directly to the operating system clipboard. The addon therefore selects the command for you instead of copying it automatically.

**Favorites**

Frequently used expressions can be stored in the Favorites section for faster access.

Use Shift + Left Click on a catalog entry to add or remove it from Favorites.

Favorites are stored account-wide and remain available across characters.

**Recent Expressions**

Expressions performed through the addon are added to the Recent section.

This provides quick access to commands and custom expressions that were used during the current or previous play sessions.

The recent-expression history is stored account-wide.

**Custom Expressions**

The Custom section allows you to create and manage your own roleplay expressions.

A custom expression can:

  • Perform a standard World of Warcraft emote
  • Send custom text
  • Perform a standard emote and send custom text together

Each custom expression can have its own:

  • Name
  • Base emote
  • Execution mode
  • Text channel
  • Custom text
  • Independent icon

Custom expressions are stored account-wide and can be created, edited, duplicated, tested, or deleted directly inside the codex.

**Custom Text Channels**

Custom text uses the EMOTE channel by default.

The following channels are available:

  • EMOTE
  • SAY
  • YELL
  • PARTY
  • RAID

Channel availability may depend on the current group or game situation.

**Custom Text Placeholders**

Custom expression text supports the following placeholders:

  • {target} – the currently selected target
  • {player} – your character name
  • {race} – your character race
  • {class} – your character class
  • {zone} – your current zone

Example:

{player} respectfully bows before {target}.

The Preview section shows how the expression will appear before it is saved or performed.

When World of Warcraft protects a target name as a secret value, the {target} placeholder falls back to a neutral description instead of attempting to expose protected information.

**Macro Export**

Custom expressions do not consume Blizzard macro slots by default.

A normal account-wide Blizzard macro is created only when the Export Macro action is explicitly used.

The addon converts unsupported addon texture paths to a valid Blizzard fallback icon when required.

**Catalog Controls**

  • Left Click: Perform the selected expression
  • Shift + Left Click: Add or remove the expression from Favorites
  • Right Click: Select the expression and display its details
  • Mouse Wheel: Move between catalog pages

**Minimap Button**

  • Left Click: Open or close the codex
  • Right Click: Open the Blizzard AddOn Settings
  • Drag: Move the minimap button while it is unlocked

The minimap button can be hidden, unlocked, repositioned, and scaled through the addon settings.

**Interface and Scaling**

The codex uses a fixed 1200 × 675 book layout to preserve the alignment of its artwork and interface elements.

The entire interface can be scaled uniformly from 75% to 120%.

The window position and selected scale are saved automatically.

**Slash Commands**

  • /cae – open or close the codex
  • /codex – open or close the codex
  • /codexae – open or close the codex
  • /cae options – open the Blizzard AddOn Settings
  • /cae debug – open the Debug settings page
  • /cae favorites – open the Favorites section
  • /cae recent – open the Recent section
  • /cae custom – open the Custom section
  • /cae reset – reset the codex position and scale
  • /cae validate – validate the runtime catalog
  • /cae help – display the available commands

**Runtime Emote Detection**

In addition to its static English catalog, the addon reads the emote information and localized slash aliases provided by the current World of Warcraft client.

Newly detected runtime emotes remain visible through fallback metadata and artwork until a future addon update provides dedicated catalog information.

**Settings and Diagnostics**

Additional controls are available under:

Settings → AddOns → Codex of Azerothian Expressions

The Debug section includes:

  • Copyable diagnostic log
  • Runtime catalog validation
  • Database summary
  • Window reset controls
  • Saved-data reset controls

These tools are intended to help identify catalog, interface, or saved-data problems when reporting a bug.

**Beta Status**

Codex of Azerothian Expressions is currently available as a public beta.

The planned core feature set is implemented. The beta phase focuses on compatibility testing, catalog validation, saved-data migration, interface alignment, and identifying unexpected behavior across different characters and gameplay situations.

Before updating from an earlier test build, it is recommended to remove the previous addon folder and install the new version cleanly. Do not delete the SavedVariables file unless you intentionally want to remove Favorites, Recent entries, settings, and Custom Expressions.

**Limitations**

  • Addons cannot copy text directly to the operating system clipboard.
  • Some chat channels require the character to be in the appropriate group.
  • Protected or secret target information cannot be accessed by addons.
  • Emote behavior, animations, sound, targeting, and restrictions are controlled by the World of Warcraft client.
  • Some emotes may behave differently depending on target, race, faction, mount state, or current game context.
  • Macro creation is subject to Blizzard's normal macro restrictions and available macro slots.

**Bug Reports and Feedback**

When reporting a problem, please include:

  • The addon version
  • Your World of Warcraft client version
  • The selected expression or custom expression
  • The steps required to reproduce the problem
  • Any visible Lua error message
  • Relevant output from the addon's Debug section
  • A screenshot when the issue affects the interface or artwork

Detailed reports are especially helpful during the beta phase.
