What's new

The Familiar: Something Watches โ€” 0.9.0-beta.1

Public Beta Begins

The first public Beta of The Familiar: Something Watches is here.

This release establishes the core experience of the pack: slow-burn psychological horror, atmospheric survival, dangerous cave exploration, and one intelligent stalker that learns from the way you play.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ The Familiar

The Familiar now serves as the central horror presence of the pack.

Its behavior is built around observation rather than constant attacks.

It can:

  • Watch from a distance

  • Study player movement and routines

  • Remember frequently traveled routes

  • React to lighting and flashlight habits

  • Track places you repeatedly return to

  • Observe sleeping, healing, eating, and combat behavior

  • Change stalking behavior based on player reactions

  • Appear around caves, forests, routes, and home areas

  • Use silence and distance as part of its encounters

Different players may develop different experiences depending on how they react.

๐ŸŒ‘ Horror & Atmosphere

This Beta introduces the intended slow-burn horror direction:

  • Reduced emphasis on constant monster attacks

  • Quieter surface exploration

  • More dangerous underground environments

  • Fog-heavy atmosphere

  • Darker exploration

  • Directional and environmental audio

  • Torch and flashlight-focused visibility

  • Retro PS1 / PS2-inspired horror presentation

  • Custom menu and loading presentation

Sometimes nothing happening is part of the experience.

โ›๏ธ Cave Experience

Underground exploration has been tuned to feel more dangerous and uncertain.

Expect:

  • Improved cave and mineshaft exploration

  • Darker underground environments

  • Stronger sound-based tension

  • Encounters designed around corners, tunnels, and visibility

  • A clearer difference between surface and underground danger

Prepare before going deep.

๐Ÿ  Survival & Progression

The pack keeps Minecraft survival at the center of the experience.

This release includes work around:

  • World generation

  • Structures

  • Farming and food

  • Equipment progression

  • Backpacks and storage

  • Weather and seasonal atmosphere

  • Movement and animation improvements

  • Dynamic lighting

  • Performance optimization

The goal is to support the horror without turning survival into unnecessary busywork.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Multiplayer

Multiplayer support is included in Beta.

The Familiar can maintain player-specific behavior and targeting, allowing different players to develop different histories with it.

Multiplayer behavior is still being actively tested and may receive significant tuning during future Beta updates.

โšก Performance

A curated optimization stack is included to support the pack's:

  • Shaders

  • Atmospheric effects

  • World generation

  • AI systems

  • Environmental audio

Approximately 10 GB RAM is recommended.

One Rule

Go in blind.

Do not look up every mechanic.

Do not search for what it looks like.

The less you know, the better it works.

Something is watching.

Do not look away.
