Middle-earth Folk

Women among the peoples of Middle-earth: female soldiers, peasants, elves and dwarves, told apart by face, hair and figure

Middle-earth Folk v1.0.0 Minecraft 1.21.8 Requires Fabric API Built for Middle-earth 1.0.1

Half of Middle-earth was missing. The women of Gondor, Rohan, Dale and the Shire take their places among their own people.

A Fabric add-on for the Middle-earth mod and Middle-earth Spawn Balance

Needs Middle-earth 1.0.1 Needs Spawn Balance 1.3.0

This is an add-on, not a standalone mod

It does nothing on its own and will not even start without both of these installed: Middle-earth 1.0.1 - the world, the peoples and the NPCs this mod dresses, and Middle-earth Spawn Balance 1.3.0 - where all of this mod's settings live, because it deliberately ships no screen of its own.

Description

Walk into any town in Middle-earth and you will meet men. Only men.

This mod changes that. Women appear among the free peoples and the brigands, at a rate you choose, with faces and hair of their own. And because a face at twenty blocks is a handful of pixels, it adds the one thing a face cannot give: a figure you can read across a street.

Nothing else changes. Trade, hiring, reputation and combat treat a woman exactly as they treat anyone else. This is a mod about who you see, not about how anyone behaves.

What you get

Women among the free peoples and the brigands: Gondor, Rohan, Dale, the Shire, both elven realms, the dwarves of Erebor, the Dunlendings, and the outlaws of the roads. Fourteen combat roles that had no women at all now have them.
Faces, hair and eyes made for them, and hair that lies on the shoulders and down the back - over a shirt or over a breastplate. Best seen rather than described.
A silhouette you can read at a glance, drawn in the same passes as the body itself, so it wears exactly what its owner wears - tunic, tabard or steel. The worn chest plate is drawn over it in its own texture, dye and enchantment glint included.
No two women are built the same. Each one's figure comes from her own identity and never changes on her, so a market square looks like a crowd rather than a rank of copies.
She moves when she walks, runs, jumps and lands, and settles when she stops. Strength and settling are both dials, and the whole thing turns off with one tick.
Goblins, orcs and uruk-hai are never given women, and it does not rest on a list somebody has to keep tidy. Even a config that names Mordor by mistake cannot produce an orc with a woman's face.
No screen of its own and no command of its own, on purpose. Everything appears on Spawn Balance's settings screen, in its command with tab completion, and in its named presets, so nobody has to learn where this mod hid its options.

Settings

Everything lives on the Folk tab of /mespawn gui, in /mespawn set folk.<key>, and in config/mefolk.json.

How many The share of women, thirty percent out of the box, with overrides per role, per people and per land. A guard of Gondor can be almost all men while the Shire is nearly even. Set it to zero and the world is exactly as it was without the mod.
The figure On or off, visible under armour or not, size, and how much women differ from one another. The size is a floor rather than an average, because the small end is where a shape stops reading as a body.
Movement On or off, how hard movement throws it, how quickly it settles, how much armour quietens it, and how far away it stops being worked out at all.
Appearance Which body, face and hair each people's women are built from - editable, so a server can give Rohan its own look without touching a texture.

Requirements

Minecraft 1.21.8, on the Fabric loader
Fabric API Required
Middle-earth by Jukoz Version 1.0.1 required
Middle-earth Spawn Balance Version 1.3.0 required. This mod puts its settings on that mod's screen and its counts into that mod's reports, and will not start without it

Worth knowing

A villager is the same person tomorrow. Gender and figure are both worked out from an NPC's own identity rather than rolled for, so nobody changes when a chunk reloads. The other side of that coin: changing the share does not reach back and rewrite anyone already alive, only whoever comes next.

Distant NPCs. Middle-earth has an optional simplified rendering for characters far away, which uses flat pre-drawn icons. Those exist only for Gondor and the Shire, so with that setting on, women look male at a distance. It is off by default.

More for your Middle-earth run

Middle-earth Kinship

Talk, trade and haggle with the free folk of Middle-earth, change your coin, and hire their warriors to march at your side.

Middle-earth Satchels

Tiered leather satchels forged from the metals of Middle-earth, so you can carry more on your journey.

Middle-earth Spawn Balance

Lore-true spawning for the same world: the orc lands crawl, the elven woods stay quiet, torchlight keeps your home clear and the uruk-hai march at noon. It ends the mob flood and hands you a settings screen with presets to tune it yourself.

Credit

The approach to the figure's movement was arrived at by studying Wildfire's Female Gender Mod, which solves the same problem for the player model. None of its code is here, but the debt is to the idea and it is worth saying so.
