Makes the Mute, Deaf and Partial Deafness handicaps from Handicap work in Simple Voice Chat. Out of the box, Handicap only affects the text chat and the game sounds: a mute player can still talk in voice chat, and a deaf player still hears everyone perfectly. This addon closes that gap. Voice chat now follows your handicaps.
Features
Mute
A mute player can still press their push-to-talk key, but what comes out is a heavily muffled, garbled voice that nobody can understand. The player gets no message or warning about it: from their side, everything seems normal.
Deaf
A deaf player still notices that someone is talking: a faint, muffled rumble. The words themselves can't be understood.
undefined
Partial Deafness
Voices are quieter and muffled, as if heard through a wall. Speech is still mostly understandable.
Effects stack
When a mute player talks to a deaf player, both filters apply: the deaf player hears the already-garbled voice, muffled once more.
Works everywhere in Simple Voice Chat
Proximity chat, whispering, groups, and audio played by other Simple Voice Chat addons are all affected.
Configuration
Each handicap has its own section with three settings, from 0.0 to 1.0:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
volume |
1 = unchanged, 0 = silent |
muffle |
0 = clear, 1 = only a low rumble remains |
distortion |
0 = clean, 1 = unintelligible |
Default values:
| Handicap | Volume | Muffle | Distortion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mute | 0.7 | 0.9 | 0.85 |
| Deaf | 0.3 | 0.95 | 0.2 |
| Partial Deafness | 0.2 | 0.6 | 0.0 |
- File:
config/handicapvoice.toml. Every value is commented. Out-of-range values are reset to their default. - In-game screen: with Mod Menu installed, open Mods → Handicap Voice Compat → Configure. In singleplayer or LAN, changes apply instantly to everyone connected.
- Server-controlled: the server sends its config to every player who joins. Players can't weaken the effects from their own config.
- On a dedicated server, edit the file and restart the server to apply changes.

FAQ
Is it Fabric only?
Yes, only Fabric is supported for now. Does it change game sounds? No. Handicap already handles game sounds. This addon only affects Simple Voice Chat audio.
What if a player is both Deaf and Partially Deaf? Deaf takes priority, just like in Handicap. Can a player bypass it? The audio is processed on the player's own computer, so a deliberately modified client could skip it. Normal players can't turn it off, and the strength of the effects is always decided by the server.
