Fire that behaves a little more like you'd expect. Drink a fire resistance potion and the flames actually go out. Kill a cow with fire and get steak. Hit a zombie with flint and steel and it catches fire.
Unofficial port of Better Burning by Darkhax, for NeoForge and Fabric on 1.21.1, 1.21.11, 26.2 and 26.3. Please report bugs here.
What it changes
- Fire resistance puts you out. In vanilla you keep burning (and keep seeing the flames) while the potion stops the damage. Now the fire goes out.
- Fire kills drop cooked food. A mob killed by fire damage drops cooked meat even if the flames never caught on it, for example when it dies standing in a campfire.
- Burning mobs spread fire. A mob that's on fire and attacks with an empty hand can set its target alight (30% chance). Zombies already do this in vanilla and are left alone.
- Flint and steel as a weapon. Hitting a mob with flint and steel sets it on fire for 3 seconds.
- Burning skeletons shoot burning arrows (70% chance), like they did up to 1.10.
- Punching out fire burns you for a second, two for soul fire. You can also turn off punching out fire completely.
- Water bottles put fire out. Use a water bottle on fire and you get the empty bottle back.
Config
config/betterburning.properties has a switch for each change, the two chances, how long flint and steel and punched fire burn, and whether fire can be punched out at all.
The original's option to hide the fire overlay for fire-immune players isn't ported. Fire resistance putting the flames out covers the usual case.
FAQ
Client or server? The server needs it (or your game, in singleplayer). Players don't need it to join.
Does it need anything else? On Fabric, Fabric API. On NeoForge, nothing.
How is it tested? Every change has a game test, and a second one that runs the same setup with the change switched off for that mob or player, to show vanilla really behaves differently. They run on all four Minecraft versions, on NeoForge and Fabric.
Can I use it in my modpack? Yes, go ahead, no need to ask.
