Animal Fun: Prehistoric — 73 species for Minecraft Bedrock

Seventy-three extinct animals, built to their real size

Animal Fun: Prehistoric is the deep-time half of the Animal Fun family — dinosaurs and pterosaurs, the reptiles that went back into the sea, the strange things that were swimming before any of them, and the mammals that came after the ice. Every one is modeled and painted for this pack, scaled against the real animal, and dropped into Bedrock with behavior to match.

An Argentinosaurus is nineteen blocks from nose to tail. A Meganeura is two thirds of one. They are on the same curve, and that is the point.

This is an expansion pack. It needs Animal Fun - Land (base) v1.54.0 or newer to do anything at all — the base pack owns the settings menu, the Field Guide, taming, riding and the spawn controls. Install that first.

Version v1.10.3
Species 73, in 13 menu categories
Requires Animal Fun - Land (base) v1.54.0+ for the animals · v1.59.8+ for the paddock set (its fence shocks and its gate opens through Land) · v1.61.1 is current
Minecraft Bedrock 1.21.120 or newer · works with Vibrant Visuals
Languages 29 — every species and item is named in each
Experimental toggles None. Achievements stay on.
Platforms Anything that runs Bedrock, dedicated servers included

Ancient Fish (since v1.9.0). Megalodon, Dunkleosteus and Leedsichthys have moved here from Animal Fun: Fish, where they were the only extinct animals in a pack of living ones. They keep their ids, models, textures and their Ancient Fish drop, so anything already swimming in your world carries straight over.

The roster

Theropods — 16

The meat-eaters, from a 12.7-block Tyrannosaurus and the sail-backed Spinosaurus down to Compsognathus at about a block, most of it tail. Raptors hunt in the open, Therizinosaurus keeps its claws to itself, and Baryonyx fishes. Theropods

Sauropods — 7

The largest animals in the pack and the reason the scale chart exists. Argentinosaurus, Brachiosaurus, Diplodocus, Apatosaurus, Mamenchisaurus and the spined Amargasaurus — plus Plateosaurus, the small early sauropodomorph they all descend from, which has its own menu category in game. Sauropods

Armored & Horned — 7

Triceratops, Stegosaurus, Ankylosaurus with its club, Styracosaurus, Kentrosaurus, the head-butting Pachycephalosaurus and little Protoceratops. Several of them fight back rather than run. Armored and horned dinosaurs

Ornithopods & Runners — 5

The herds. Parasaurolophus and its crest, Iguanodon, Edmontosaurus, the nesting Maiasaura, and Gallimimus, which shares the fastest gait in the pack with the terror bird. Ornithopods and runners

Pterosaurs — 5

They actually fly, on the same flight rig the base pack uses for birds — a real flight navigation, not a hop. Quetzalcoatlus spans ten blocks wingtip to wingtip; Rhamphorhynchus spans under two. Pterosaurs

Prehistoric & Early Birds — 2

Phorusrhacos, the terror bird that ran its prey down and is still one of the two fastest animals here, and Archaeopteryx, which is where the whole argument about feathered dinosaurs started. Two menu categories in game, one picture here. Terror bird and archaeopteryx

Marine Reptiles — 6

Mosasaurus, Liopleurodon, Kronosaurus, the long-necked Elasmosaurus, the dolphin-shaped Ichthyosaurus and Nothosaurus. They swim on the water template with proper depth filters, so they turn up in deep ocean rather than in a village pond. Marine reptiles

Ancient Sea Life — 5

Basilosaurus, the eighteen-block early whale, and the invertebrates that got there long before anything with a backbone: Anomalocaris, a sea scorpion, an ammonite and a trilobite. Ancient sea life

Ancient Fish — 3 (new in v1.9.0)

Megalodon at nine blocks, the armor-headed Dunkleosteus, and Leedsichthys — the largest fish that has ever lived, and a filter feeder that will ignore you completely. Moved in from Animal Fun: Fish, which now holds only living species. Ancient fish

Ice Age Mammals — 11

The other end of deep time. Woolly mammoth and rhinoceros, Smilodon, the giant ground sloth, Megaloceros, the cave bear (a grizzly and then some), dire wolf, Glyptodon, the hornless giant Paraceratherium, Elasmotherium and an entelodont. Ice age mammals

Ancient Giants — 6

Everything that was enormous before the dinosaurs, or alongside them: Dimetrodon, Gorgonops, the thirteen-meter Titanoboa, resting in a coil, Sarcosuchus, the millipede Arthropleura and Meganeura, a dragonfly with a bird's wingspan. Ancient giants

Built to the right size

One block is one meter, and every animal is measured against its real self on that one curve — so a Tyrannosaurus really does look at a Triceratops eye to eye, and a Velociraptor really is turkey-sized. Collision boxes stay deliberately smaller than the animal so a nineteen-block sauropod can still find its way through a forest, but 65 species carry a proper centered hit box on top, so hitting one connects where you can see it.

Sizes compared to a player

Four coats, seventy-three palettes

Every animal rolls a coat when it spawns — untinted, a deeper morph, a hue shift or a pale one — and the wash is derived from that species' own texture, so a mammoth gets mammoth browns and a mosasaur gets mosasaur blues. A herd looks like a herd instead of a row of clones.

Coat variants

Everything is worth hunting

All 73 species have a loot table and an experience reward, and every kill cooks. Nine raw types, nine cooked, each smeltable in a furnace, smoker or campfire. Bigger animals give more, and the vertebrates drop bone.

Nothing here borrows a vanilla food item. A mammoth is not a cow, so it does not drop beef.

Raw and cooked meat items

How they behave

  • Temperaments per species — 42 hunt other animals, and 24 of those — the big theropods and raptors, the large marine reptiles, megalodon, the ice-age hunters, titanoboa and more — hunt players too, from the moment they spawn. The other 31 start peaceful, and the horned, armored and ice-age herbivores among them fight back hard when hit. Every one of them can be changed from the base pack's menu.
  • Hunters pick prey they can take. A dire wolf leaves a mammoth alone; babies don't hunt at all.
  • A real food chain. Predators hunt a curated prey list rather than "anything that moves", and 19 species flee what actually hunts them. Nothing hunts its own kind.
  • Flight that works. The pterosaurs, Meganeura, Microraptor and Archaeopteryx take off, cruise, land for a while and take off again. A ridden one climbs when you hold jump instead of dropping out of the sky.
  • Swimmers that stay swimmers. The marine reptiles, the ancient fish and Basilosaurus are on the vanilla water-mob spawn template with depth filters, which is what keeps them in deep ocean.
  • Babies. Every species breeds and has a scaled-down juvenile.
  • Nothing despawns that you put there. Anything spawned from an egg, a command or the menu — and anything tamed or saddled — stays; only naturally spawned animals cycle.

Every voice in the pack was generated for it. Fifteen voice families, four clips each — two idles, hurt and death. The 35 heaviest animals also have footsteps you can hear: two CC0 clips, Monster footsteps on gravel by AudioPapkin, the same pair the base pack ships.

A paddock set

Twenty-three blocks for keeping dinosaurs, in the Construction tab and the recipe book. They need Animal Fun - Land v1.59.8 or newer.

  • An electric fence and fence pylons that shock anything leaning on them, with sparks. Every prehistoric animal keeps off them on its own.
  • A barred gate only a player can open. Gates side by side or stacked open together, so you can build a doorway a sauropod fits through.
  • A keep-back strip for the floor that no prehistoric animal will step on. Lay a band of it inside the wall and long necks and tails stop poking through the glass.
  • Three feeders you fill by hand: a browse tower for the sauropods, a carcass hook for the meat-eaters (the haunch swings on its chain) and a fish chute.
  • Places to visit: a salt lick, a nest mound (a hatchling peeks out now and then), gastroliths, a rubbing rock, cycads, tree ferns and a cliff roost for the fliers.
  • Scenery: concrete and hazard-striped walls, a danger sign, a floodlight, a fossil wall, dig-site sand, volcanic rock with glowing cracks, a steam vent and a hatchery with an egg that rocks and hatches.

The 23 paddock blocks

Riding

Eight species carry riders out of the box — the five sauropods, Triceratops, Ankylosaurus and the woolly mammoth. Every other species has the machinery wired and switched off; turn one on in /af:menu if you want it. The saddle and harness are real geometry rather than a texture swap, so you can see the straps.

Wild, saddled and harnessed

Install

  • Install and activate the Animal Fun base pack first. Without it this expansion registers nothing and has no menu.
  • Import the .mcaddon and activate both its behavior and resource packs in your world.
  • Pack order doesn't matter — the base pack just has to be active.

Vibrant Visuals: supported since v1.10.2. It stays grayed out while any active resource pack lacks support, so update all five Animal Fun packs together (Land v1.61.1 or newer).

After updating any Animal Fun pack, exit the world and re-enter before judging the result. Entities hold stale state until a reload, and the symptom looks exactly like "the update didn't apply".

Commands

Command What it does
/af:spawnpre <species> [count] Tab-completing spawn command for this pack's species
/af:spawnid <id> [count] Base-pack command; works for every species in every pack
/af:menu The base pack's settings tree — this pack appears as its own entry

What the base pack gives you for these animals

  • Per-species enable/disable, spawn frequency and mob caps
  • The craftable Field Guide, which populates from this pack automatically
  • Taming, breeding and the saddle/harness handling
  • The hunting-rate dial and mob-kill drop suppression
  • The on-screen entity tag

The pack family

330 species across five packs, all sharing one base pack and one settings menu.

Pack Version Species
Animal Fun - Land (base) v1.61.1 96
Animal Fun: Birds v1.15.12 67
Animal Fun: Fish v1.10.9 66
Animal Fun: Marine Mammals & Oddities v1.10.4 28
Animal Fun: Prehistoric — this pack v1.10.3 73

Troubleshooting

Nothing from this pack appears in /af:menu. The base pack isn't installed, isn't active, or its script is down. The expansion can't show a menu of its own.

A species never spawns naturally. Settings live in world data, so a fresh world starts at defaults — check the species is enabled and its frequency isn't at zero. The marine species need deep ocean.

Saddling does nothing. Reload the world first, then check the species is set to carry riders in /af:menu — only eight ship with riding on.

Two name labels show at the top of the screen. Another add-on is drawing its own look-at label — Massive Trees does by default. Set its label to Only this pack's trees, or set Animal Fun's entity tag to Plain text or Off in /af:hud.

A ridden pterosaur won't climb. Hold jump. Sneak is always dismount in Bedrock and cannot be rebound, so there is no crouch-to-descend — let go and glide down.

What's new

v1.10.3

  • The animals look in game the way they were designed. In a world the sauropods held their necks straight up at the sky, and tusks, antlers, frills and some arms stood away from the body. Every model and every animation is now turned the game's way: necks reach forward, the mammoth's trunk and tusks, the Irish elk's antlers and the ceratopsians' frills sit where they belong, and nothing comes apart. The Field Guide pictures and placard faces are redrawn to match.
  • Vibrant Visuals. The pack no longer holds a world at Fancy graphics, so Vibrant Visuals can be switched on. The marine reptiles, ancient fish, Basilosaurus and ammonite have a wet sheen, and the paddock's fence lamps, floodlight, hatchery lamp and volcanic rock glow. Nothing changes in the Classic look. Every other resource pack in the world has to support Vibrant Visuals too.

v1.10.1

  • Four animals rebuilt. The terror bird has a proper body, a neck that joins it and its great hooked bill; the cave bear is built on the base pack's grizzly at 1.15× its size; Compsognathus is slim at last; and Titanoboa is a rounded snake that rests in an S instead of a straight rod, and lies still when it's idle.

v1.10.0

  • The paddock set — 23 blocks, above.
  • The big predators hunt animals and players from the start; the horned, armored and ice-age herbivores start peaceful and fight back when hit. Hunters leave prey too big for them alone, and babies don't hunt.
  • The fliers really fly — take off, cruise, land and take off again.
  • Attack animations that line up with the hit, heads that turn to look at things, resting poses for the sauropods, pterosaurs and titanoboa, and heavy footsteps on 35 species.
  • Ceratopsian frills sit on the skull, the smilodon's sabers are the right length, the sauropods hold their necks lower, and the three ancient fish were rebuilt to match the pack. The three raptors have their own colors.

v1.9.2

  • 29 languages. Every species, spawn egg and drop is now named in all 29 of Bedrock's languages, not just English.
  • Pack folders no longer carry the version number — AnimalFunPrehistoric_Behavior and AnimalFunPrehistoric_Resource. The version is in the pack's name and description instead. On a dedicated server, update world_behavior_packs.json and world_resource_packs.json to the new version.

v1.9.0

  • Ancient Fish — a new menu category holding Megalodon, Dunkleosteus and Leedsichthys, moved here from Animal Fun: Fish with their models, textures, spawn rules, loot and the Raw/Cooked Ancient Fish item pair. Same entity ids: an animal already in your world is unaffected.
  • They have this pack's voice. The three were speaking through the Fish pack's sound families, which do not exist here; Megalodon and Leedsichthys now use af.pre.rumble and Dunkleosteus af.pre.grunt.
  • Field-guide plates and Species Placard faces rendered for all three.

Every voice and every texture in this pack was made for it. The one exception is the heavy footstep pair, CC0 and credited above.
