Snowball Fight 2.5.0: The Big Overhaul
Red vs Green is retired
The old teams came from a different era: match your gnome polymorph to a red or green outfit, or hand out red and green shirts and hope everyone remembered their side. That’s gone.
Red vs Blue markers
Every player now gets a small dot over their head, and the colors are relative to you. Blue is your team, red is the enemy, so it works no matter what anyone is wearing. Dots stay the same size whether you’re targeting someone or not: clean, consistent, and easy to read in a crowd. In King of the Hill and Crown, the King and the crown holder wear a crown icon, so you always know who to chase. The game’s own health bars and name clutter stay hidden on players in the fight, so all you see is the dot.
Watchers are civilians
People watching a fight get no dot and nothing special. No mark means not playing.
Tab targeting
Tab now hooks into the markers. See red dots? Press Tab and it cycles straight through the enemy team, or the King, or the crown holder, depending on the game. In real combat, Tab goes back to normal so a mob never catches you off guard.
UI overhaul
Everything got rebuilt with a proper game feel: round timers, hit counts, scoreboards, and big announcements for every round and game type. I plan to keep dialing this in, but all the gamified pieces are here.
The freeze is back
Land a crit and your target’s screen drops to black, then slowly fades back as they thaw, with a thaw bar counting it down. Normal hits stay out of your way, so the freeze really means something.
Two ways to play
- Party Mix (the default): three game types, one per match. A snowball fight, then King of the Hill, then the Crown, then around again. Something new every match.
- Classic: just snowball fights, best of 3 rounds of 30 seconds, over and over. For when you only want to throw. Pick it on the start screen; the button turns gold so everyone knows it’s not the usual mix.
Cheaper, steadier games
Fights are a lot more stable now and tuned to be inexpensive. A round costs about a stack of snowballs, so nobody has to worry about hoarding bag space. If the host leaves or reloads, the next player takes over and the match carries on. If the whole group reloads at once, the fight puts itself back together.
No more fight codes
Every fight still has a unique id behind the scenes, but it’s hidden from menus and chat. It’s for the addon, not for players to type in, and seeing it broke the immersion. Just walk up and you’re in.
Light by design
Everything uses the game’s own fonts, sounds and textures, with no custom art, to keep it fast and the download small. I may add some snow decals in a future build; still on the fence.
Plays with 2.4.0
Friends who haven’t updated yet can still join your fights. Update to see everything, like Classic’s round count.
What’s next
This is the home stretch. The game is ready, and from here it’s minor tune-ups and UI eye candy before snowballs show up at vendors.
