Questbook

Ever needed to know what a quest wants before you have it? Questbook answers one question for any quest in the game: what do I do for this quest? It works for quests you have never picked up, not just the ones in your quest log.

Questbook - Quest Browser and HUD for Classic Era

Questbook is in active development; what is here works, and more is coming.

Ever needed to know what a quest wants before you have it? Standing at a quest giver wondering whether the follow-up is worth it? Looking for the rest of a chain you started weeks ago? Questbook answers one question for any quest in the game: what do I do for this quest?

It works for quests you have never picked up, not just the ones in your quest log — every quest, every giver, every mob and every drop, in one searchable window, built on the quest information from Questie.

Then it takes you there. A head-up display leads you to any quest giver, mob, drop, turn-in, dungeon entrance or flight master — by road, boat, zeppelin or flight path, whichever is quickest from where you stand — with the route drawn on the world map and the minimap.

Core Features

One Quest Window, Four Tabs

  • One-Click Access: the minimap button opens the Questbook window — Browse, every quest in the game as one sortable list with the details of the quest you pick beside it; Rewards, every item any quest awards; Active, the quests in your log and which one the HUD is following; and Places, anywhere in Azeroth the HUD can guide you to
  • Any Quest, Not Just Yours: the quests you have, the ones you finished, and the ones you have never seen are all here
  • Remembers Itself: where you put the window, how big you made it, and which tab you were on, through reloads and logouts

The HUD

Click any giver, mob, drop, event location or turn-in marked [hud] in the quest panel — or Guide me at the top of it — and a head-up display appears, drawn like a fighter jet's rather than a dumb arrow:

  • The Heading Tape: your heading across the top with the compass points lettered, the range in yards, your speed and an ETA, and the name, level and zone of what you are heading for
  • Two Markers: in Questie yellow under the tape — ^ is the target's bearing, * is the next turn of the route to it; past your shoulders they become << >> and <* *> so you always know which way to turn
  • ALT: how far above or below you the route's next stop is, at the right of the compass row — so you know whether the flight master is up the ramp or down the cliff before you get there
  • [T] To Target: when you are close, [T] breathes — click it, or the key you bind under Key Bindings > Questbook, to target the mob or NPC; LOCKED once it is your target
  • Out Of The Way: locked in place and click-through. Unlock it in the settings or with /questbook hud unlock to drag it, then lock it again

Routes: Boat, Zeppelin, Flight or Road

  • The Quickest Way: the HUD does not point straight at a target across the sea. It plans a route over roads, boats, zeppelins, flight paths and portals and picks the quickest — a Horde player in Orgrimmar with a quest in Alterac Valley is walked to the zeppelin, told to BOARD, and walked on from the far tower
  • Says Why: the readout names the current leg (BOARD Zeppelin to Grom'gol, FLY Freewind Post) and, on a walk, what the walk is for (-> FLY The Crossroads) — so when the marker points away from your target, you know it is taking you to the flight master
  • Keeps Up With You: take a flight the route did not plan and it re-plans from where you will land; walk round a road point and the route moves on with you rather than waiting for you to come back
  • Dungeons: a quest whose mobs are inside an instance points you at its entrance, and says so
  • Your Choice: Route over flight paths can be turned off for a character who has not learned them yet; boats and zeppelins are always used

On The World Map And The Minimap

  • The Line: the route is drawn in the HUD colour on the world map and the minimap, following you as you move
  • The Real Flight Path: a flight is drawn along the gryphon's own curve, fainter than a road; a sea crossing shows each shore on its own continent's map
  • Either Or Both: the two lines can be turned off separately, and the minimap line turns with the minimap when it rotates

The Active Tab And Guide Me

  • Your Quest Log, With Answers: the quests in your log with the same panel as Browse — giver, objectives, drops, turn-in, rewards
  • The Active Quest: the gold arrow at the end of a row makes that quest the one the HUD follows — the game's log selects and tracks it, and the HUD leads you to its first unfinished objective, then the next as they complete, then the turn-in. Remembered per character
  • Guide Me: at the top right of the quest panel, on every tab. On a quest you have, it makes it active. On a quest you do not have yet, the HUD leads you to the quest giver (or to what drops the item that starts it) and remembers the quest — the moment you accept it, it becomes the active quest and the HUD moves on to the objectives by itself
  • From The Bar: with Titan Panel, hover Questbook on the bar for a menu of your quests and click one to switch the HUD without opening the window

The Places Tab: Anywhere In Azeroth

  • Every Destination: every dungeon, raid and battleground entrance, every flight master, inn and graveyard, and every named place in Azeroth, in one list with a filter strip (search, kind, zone)
  • Go: click a row and the HUD guides you there, route and map lines included — a way to find anywhere on the continent, not just quest objectives. Click again to stop

Powerful Search and Filters

  • Search: type part of a quest name, its zone or its quest ID — word by word, in any order, so "bandanas red" finds Red Leather Bandanas
  • Search by Mob or Item: know what you have to kill or collect but not the quest name? Type that instead, and every quest that sends you after it comes up
  • Filters Across The Top: zone, level range and side; they apply as you change them, and Clear puts them all back
  • For Me: on by default, it hides quests your class or race cannot take — a hunter sees hunter quests and the ones for everyone, not the shaman ones. Untick it to see every quest; a quest that is not for you says so at the top of its panel
  • Remembered Per Character: close the window narrowed to Westfall 15–20 and it opens that way next time
  • Sortable Columns: click a column heading — quest, level, required level, zone — to sort by it; click again to reverse
  • Striped Rows: the same easy-to-scan striped list as the other addons in the family

See What To Do

Click a quest and the panel on the right shows everything, in the order you need it:

  • Where It Starts: who gives it and where they stand, or which item starts it and what drops that item — and the item you are handed on accepting
  • What It Requires: your level, and the earlier quests in the chain — saying whether you need any of them or all of them
  • What To Do: every objective, spelled out
  • Where To Turn In: who takes it, and where
  • What It Rewards: the experience you would get at your level, the items you receive, the ones you choose between, money, reputation and any spell it teaches — even for a quest you have never had. Hover an item for its tooltip; Shift-click links it into chat, Ctrl-click previews it
  • The Quest's Own Words: what the quest giver says, and the objective summary, for every quest in the game

Not in yet: filtering by whether you have done a quest. Quest text is English on every client until a translation source exists; the panel says so on a non-English client. Boats and zeppelins draw as a straight line between their two ends until QuestDB carries their paths (requested). And the HUD cannot draw in the game world itself — the game gives addons no way to — so it is a panel on the screen, not an arrow over the terrain.

The Rewards Tab

Looking for an upgrade rather than a quest? The Rewards tab lists every item any quest awards — icon, type, the level to use it, the item, and the quest that gives it:

  • Find The Gear First: filter by type, subtype, slot, quality and level, or search by item, quest or type
  • Usable By Me: keeps only gear your class can use from quests you can take — a hunter sees no maces and no plate
  • Then The Quest: hover a row for the item's tooltip; click it and you are on the Browse tab with that quest open and its row in view

Mob and Drop Details

  • Mob Levels: the level range of every mob a quest sends you after, so you know before you go whether you can handle it
  • Elite and Rare: marked, so a group quest never surprises you
  • Where They Are: the zone and coordinates where each mob spawns
  • What Drops It: for every item a quest wants, which mobs or objects drop it and how often

Follow Any Chain

  • The Whole Chain: earlier and later quests, each one a click away
  • Breadcrumbs and Choices: quests that lead into this one, and quests you can only do one of
  • Back Button: wander through a chain and return to where you started with one click

How It Works

Setup (One-Time)

  1. Install Questbook through the CurseForge app — Questie, QuestDB and the libraries come with it
  2. Log in. Questbook waits for Questie to finish loading its quest information, then it is ready
  3. Done! There is nothing to configure

Daily Usage

  1. Click the minimap button, or type /questbook
  2. Type in the search box (e.g., "Defias"), or narrow the list with the filters across the top
  3. Click a quest → the panel on the right shows where it starts, what to do, where to turn it in, and what it rewards
  4. Click any quest in its chain to jump to it; Back brings you home
  5. Click Guide me at the top of the panel, or any [hud] in it, and the HUD leads you there — follow the * marker and the line on your minimap
  6. On the Active tab, the arrow at the end of a row makes that quest the one the HUD follows, objective by objective
  7. The Places tab guides you to any dungeon entrance, flight master, inn or named place; the Rewards tab lists every item any quest awards
  8. The i by the close button explains everything the window does; the gear opens the settings

The Minimap Button

  • Left-click: open or close the window
  • Right-click: show or hide the HUD
  • Shift-click: open the settings

Why Choose Questbook?

Answers, Then Directions

  • Built for Questions: map pins show you where things are; Questbook tells you what a quest is before you decide to do it
  • Any Quest: look up the quest a guildmate asked about, the one in a chain you have not reached, or the one you skipped
  • Everything in One Place: giver, objectives, mobs, drops, turn-in and chain on one panel — no alt-tabbing to a website
  • Then Go: one click and the HUD takes you there by the quickest way — boat, zeppelin, flight or road — and tells you which, rather than pointing straight across the sea

User Experience

  • Intuitive Interface: filters across the top, a striped list below, details on the right
  • Smart Defaults: shows quests for your faction, sorted by level, out of the box
  • Stays Out of the Way: costs nothing until you open it

Active Development

  • Regular Updates: bug fixes and feature additions
  • Community-Driven: features requested on Discord shape what comes next

Slash Commands

  • /questbook — open or close the Questbook window, the same as the minimap button

Configuration

Questbook works without any setup. The window remembers its own position, size and tab. The gear button by the close button opens the settings: text size (which enlarges the rows and fonts together) and window opacity. The minimap button can be hidden there too.

Dependencies & Compatibility

Required

All of these install automatically through the CurseForge app.

  • Questie — the quest information Questbook shows. Questie must be enabled for Questbook to work
  • QuestDB — quest rewards and quest text, which Questie does not carry
  • ItemDB — the offline item database: reward items named and coloured by quality even for items you have never seen, their tooltips, and the Rewards tab's type, slot, level and Usable By Me filters
  • Ace3 — core framework
  • VersionCheck-1.0 — tells you when a new version is out
  • LibAceGUIWidgets — the shared list, search box and window widgets

Compatibility

  • World of Warcraft Classic Era (Interface 11509)
  • Runs alongside Questie — Questie keeps its map pins, tracker and tooltips; Questbook adds its own window

Shared Foundations

Questbook is built on the same set of libraries as TOGBankClassic, TOG Profession Master and FastGuildInvite, rather than reinventing the same plumbing:

  • LibAceGUIWidgets — the striped lists, search box and window-position memory these windows share, so they all look and behave alike
  • ItemDB — the offline item database behind the reward items, their tooltips and the Rewards tab's filters
  • QuestDB — the quest rewards and quest text Questie does not carry
  • VersionCheck — tells you when a newer version is out

Each is published separately and installs automatically through the CurseForge app.

Quest Information:

  • Questie — the WoW Classic quest helper, by the Questie team and its contributors. Every quest giver, objective, mob, spawn location, drop and quest chain Questbook shows comes from Questie's database, which the Questie community has built and corrected over many years. Questbook contains none of Questie's files: it reads the information from your own installed copy of Questie while the game runs. Without Questie, Questbook would not exist — thank you.
  • CMaNGOS — the Continued MaNGOS project, and the MaNGOS project it continues. Quest rewards and quest text come from the CMaNGOS classic server database, which its contributors reverse-engineered and tested, because the game client itself doesn't store them. They reach Questbook through QuestDB, which re-expresses the underlying facts in its own format; neither addon redistributes any CMaNGOS file.

Special Thanks:

  • The Questie team, for the quest helper and the database this addon is built on
  • The CMaNGOS and MaNGOS contributors, for the server database
  • Ace3 library maintainers for the excellent framework
  • WoW Classic community for feedback and support

Perfect For

  • Levelers: plan the next few levels by zone and level range, and see which quests are worth the walk
  • Completionists: browse every quest in the game, not just the ones in your log
  • Chain Hunters: follow a quest chain from its first breadcrumb to its last quest, one click at a time
  • Guildmates Asking "Where Is...?": look up any quest someone asks about, even one you have never had

Tips & Best Practices

  1. Search Loosely: the words can be in any order, so "bandanas red" finds Red Leather Bandanas without remembering the exact title
  2. Search by Mob or Item: if you know what you need to kill or collect but not the quest name, search for that instead
  3. Narrow by Zone and Level: pick a zone and a level range to plan the next few levels in one place
  4. Check Mob Levels First: a quick look at the objective's level range saves a wasted trip
  5. Follow the Chain: open the last quest in a chain to see everything that leads up to it

Download Questbook and stop guessing what a quest wants.

Every quest. Every giver. Every drop. One window.

Bug Reports & Feature Requests

Discord is the only place bug reports and feature requests are tracked. Reports left as CurseForge comments or elsewhere are likely to be missed.

Join the Discord — for bugs, feature requests, questions, or anything else.

Before reporting a bug, this makes it far easier to fix:

  • Name the quest you were looking at.
  • Say which versions of Questbook and Questie you are running.
  • If the information shown for a quest looks wrong, say what you expected — Questbook shows Questie's information, so it may be something to report to Questie too.
  • Include any error message the game showed.
