Map Shortcuts for TomTom

Shows hand-picked shortcut routes (mountain crossings, cliff climbs, death-skips) on the world map as TomTom waypoints, in WoW Forever and Classic Era.

Map Shortcuts for TomTom **requires** TomTom and depends on it to draw every waypoint. Get TomTom from CurseForge or Wago. The CurseForge app should install TomTom for you automatically. Wago does not, so if you install from Wago, install TomTom yourself.

Map Shortcuts for TomTom puts a growing list of shortcuts, curated and verified manually by a passionate Classic player, on your world map in World of Warcraft: Forever and Classic Era. Each shortcut is a TomTom waypoint with a name that says what it is, so you can find the route on the world map instead of searching a guide. In the game, in your AddOns list and in its options panel, it is called MapShortcuts.

What you see

Each shortcut is a route: one waypoint, or several to follow in order, drawn as small coloured pins on the world map (a setting to change their size is a planned future feature), with TomTom's usual pins on the minimap. Each stretch of a route has its own colour, so you can follow it and tell it apart from routes nearby. A route that crosses zones shows in full when any of its zones is on.

Hover a pin to read the route's name, which step it is (for example 3 of 10) and a short hint for that step, such as where to jump or where to drop. Then, if you like, set it as your TomTom arrow as you would with any other TomTom waypoint. Otherwise they stay as pins on the world map and minimap: no arrow follows you and nothing is added to your screen.

A long route shows only its start and end at first; its start says how many waypoints are hidden, and /ms steps (or Ctrl+click on the world map button, Forever only) shows them all.

Points of interest, such as the climb up Forlorn Ridge ("Azshara Crater"), are places worth a visit that are not shortcuts. They stay hidden until you turn them on with /ms poi or in the options panel.

Routes include

  • Dun Morogh or Loch Modan to Badlands or Searing Gorge, as a low-level Alliance to explore and collect flight paths, or as Horde to avoid getting PvP flagged by Alliance guards
  • Darkshore to Moonglade
  • Garren's Haunt to Agamand Mills
  • Redridge Mountains to Swamp of Sorrows and back
  • Mulgore to The Crossroads

Zones where the author has not yet discovered or added existing shortcuts are left alone. Know one? Contribute it on the Issues tab on CurseForge.

You choose where they show

You decide per zone, and nothing appears until you say so:

  • A popup asks when you arrive in a zone that has shortcuts: "This zone", "Not until relog" or "All zones". It never appears in combat and waits a few seconds after you log in. You can turn it off.
  • An options panel (Game Menu -> Options -> AddOns -> MapShortcuts) lists every zone with a checkbox, the state of its popup, and a Reset button for each zone, plus the popup and points-of-interest switches.
  • Slash commands (/mapshortcuts also works):
    • /ms zone turns the current zone on or off (Forever: left click on the world map button).
    • /ms all turns every zone on or off (Forever: right click on the world map button).
    • /ms steps shows or hides every waypoint of long routes (Forever: Ctrl+click on the world map button).
    • /ms poi shows or hides the points of interest.
    • /ms popups turns the popup on or off.
    • /ms list lists the zones and whether each is on.
    • /ms id shows the zone's map ID.
    • /ms reset forgets a zone's choice.
    • /ms help lists the commands.
  • A world map button (Forever only; a round button with a gold ring, near the world map's Map Pin, stacked neatly with other addon buttons) does the same as /ms zone with a left click, /ms all with a right click and /ms steps with Ctrl+click. Its tooltip shows the current state. Classic Era has no default place for world map buttons, so use the slash commands and the options panel there for now (better options for Era UI are under review).

Why use it

  • Reignite your sense of adventure and go off the beaten path: the ledge nobody jumps from, the death-skip that saves a long run, the way up the hill you always assumed was a wall.
  • Spend less time running the long way round and more time doing what you logged in for, whether that is a quest, a dungeon or a friend waiting at the flight master.
  • Every route has been run by hand before it goes in, and each one sits as a named pin on your own world map, right where you need it. Many were first shared by players in YouTube videos and comments: links to those videos, with credit to their authors, are a planned future feature. Until then, a shout-out to Kamisayo, sanapelaaja, Bornlesszero, WillEmmo, WillpowerAUS, nota3233, forlornone4047 and scooldrood.
  • Keep the world map quiet: zones stay off until you turn them on, a dismissed popup does not come back until you relog, and your choices are saved between sessions.

Requirements

  • World of Warcraft: Forever (Interface 16001) or Classic Era (Interface 11509). It is not made for Retail.
  • TomTom is required (see the top of this page). Without it, MapShortcuts still loads but shows no pins, and says in chat and in its options panel that TomTom is needed.

Known issue on Forever (not caused by MapShortcuts)

This is not a MapShortcuts bug, and it concerns the world map buttons, which only Forever has. Confirmed in Stonetalon Mountains (but not assumed to be zone-specific): after you reopen the world map, RareScanner's round world map button can sit on top of the Map Pin and hide its icon. It happens with MapShortcuts disabled too, and comes from the world map button library that RareScanner and Questie both embed. It is mentioned here only so you know where to look if the Map Pin seems to vanish.
