ForeverDungeons

A dungeon journal built into the Looking For Group window from the game's own parts — written as you travel, or read whole from the start.

Description

Forever Dungeons

Retail has the Adventure Guide. Classic never did, and neither does Forever.

This is my take on one.

Not the first, but built differently

There are already good dungeon addons, and this is not trying to be the most complete of them. It is trying to look like it shipped with the game.

Forever ships a modern UI, which — don't hate — I have rather enjoyed, coming from years of ElvUI and more recently EUI. This addon is built out of it: the same frames, fonts and artwork, measured off the live interface rather than approximated.

Three modes

A retail feature dropped into Classic unchanged hands you the whole world on the first evening, so you pick how much the journal tells you.

  • Chronicle — everything, whether you have been there or not.
  • Adventure — it fills in as you travel. You hear of a place when you are nearly ready for it, a boss you have not met is a silhouette, and a dungeon's map arrives the first time you walk in, filling with bosses as you kill them.
  • Hardcore — only what you have seen with your own eyes. An arrow, and it will not say where it leads; a dungeon's map and every boss on it arrive together, once you have cleared the place.

Contents

Dungeons — a compendium of every dungeon in the game.*

Locations — an on-screen arrow to the selected dungeon's entrance, plus map and minimap pins.

Maps — Classic ships no dungeon maps, so opening the world map inside one shows you the continent you cannot see. This draws the dungeon instead, with every boss marked where you meet him. The places drawn as more than one picture — the Deadmines and its flooded cove, Shadowfang Keep floor by floor, the Scarlet Monastery wing by wing — step between them, and one button puts the real map back whenever you want it. You need not be standing in one, either: the map's own breadcrumb grows a Dungeons step, so any map your mode will show you is two clicks away from wherever you happen to be.*

Bosses — rosters, abilities, and portraits that can be swapped for the creature's own 3D model, framed one boss at a time rather than dropped in.*

Loot — what drops and from whom, filterable by boss and by item type.*

Quests — what a dungeon has, what stands in front of each one, and who hands it to you. Givers are marked on the map and the minimap, and a quest nobody can walk up and take says what is gating it. The list is filtered to the character reading it: another faction's quests are not in it, and neither are another class's.*

* Still being filled in. The dungeon list is complete. The pages behind it are written a dungeon at a time, and one that has not been reached yet says so rather than showing you a blank.

A note on AI

I used AI to assist the development of this addon, in the same capacity I use it in my day job as a software developer.

AI was also used to generate some of the assets — the boss portraits in particular. I tried as hard as I could to keep them in the Classic/Forever artstyle rather than letting them drift into something that would look wrong next to the game's own art.

Everything else belongs to Blizzard: the frames, the fonts, the atlases and the instance artwork, used the way any interface addon uses them.

Commands

  • /dungeons — open the browser
  • /dungeons mode — switch between Chronicle, Adventure and Hardcore
  • /dungeons discovery — what this character has found so far
  • /dungeons help — everything else

Feedback

Corrections are welcome in the comments — if a boss drops something this does not list, or a roster is wrong, say so.
