Ever seen your Sims pick up a book, read for just a short while, put it down, and immediately move on to something else?
Smarter Reading makes reading sessions feel more natural by encouraging Sims to stay focused on their books for longer instead of constantly being interrupted by other autonomous actions.
✨ What This Mod Does
When a Sim uses the Read interaction, the reading action is locked in for approximately 45-60 in-game minutes.
This means Sims are less likely to abandon their book shortly after they start reading, giving them longer and more meaningful reading sessions.
The duration is randomized within this range, so not every reading session will last exactly the same amount of time.
📖 Read vs. Browse Books
This mod specifically affects the Read interaction.
It does not change Browse Books.
This is intentional because Browse Books is naturally designed to be a short interaction. During normal autonomous gameplay, Sims may choose between Read and Browse Books, so you may still occasionally see a Sim pick up a book only briefly when they choose to browse it.
That behavior is normal and does not mean the mod isn't working.
🎓 Works Great with Auto Reading Skill Books
This mod pairs especially well with my Auto Reading Skill Books mod.
Auto Reading Skill Books encourages Sims to autonomously read available skill books and uses the full Read interaction rather than Browse Books.
When both mods are installed:
Sim autonomously chooses a Skill Book → Reads it → Stays focused on reading for approximately 45–90 in-game minutes → Gets more meaningful time to build their skill
The two mods are completely separate, so you can use Smarter Reading on its own. However, using them together creates a much more consistent autonomous reading experience.
💡 Why I Made This
I wanted Sims who choose to read to actually spend some meaningful time doing it.
Instead of constantly picking up books, reading for a moment, and getting distracted by another autonomous action, Sims can now settle down with their book and enjoy a proper reading session.
A small autonomy adjustment—but one that can make everyday Sim behavior feel much more natural.
