NPC Household Variety
by deadlystingnyc
You go into the household manager and realize nearly every Sim the game generates lives alone. Families, when they do pop up, are almost always led by a single parent. You never see roommates or couples either. NPC Household Variety fixes that by making the game's NPC spawning systems use the household templates the game already has.
Why You Need This

The Sims 4's background population system tends to produce single-Sim households regardless of how many multi-Sim templates exist. The result is a world that feels emptier than it should, full of solo adult NPCs with no families, roommates, or partners. And why can't the local barfly have roommates…or even kids? This mod injects a broader set of household templates into the NPC filter pool and weights multi-Sim templates five times higher than single-Sim ones, so the families and couples the game is capable of making actually show up.
How It Works
Multi-Sim household templates are weighted at 5x the probability of single-Sim ones across the NPC filter pool. The mod also enables repurposing of existing world Sims across more filter types, reducing unnecessary NPC creation and improving pool reuse overall.
World-specific household pools are used automatically when the relevant pack is installed:
- Willow Creek (base game): Garden District household templates
- Snowy Escape: Mt. Komorebi uses Japanese-inspired multi-generational family templates
- Strangerville: the generic pool is extended with Strangerville-specific households
- Cats & Dogs: Brindleton Bay pet owner households are correctly associated with the region upon creation
What's excluded. The following filter types are left untouched and continue using their original EA-defined behavior:
- Occult and singleton NPCs (Grim Reaper, Father Winter, Flower Bunny, Bonehilda, and similar)
- PlantSims, which are not repurposed into mundane walkby or venue roles
- Celebrity and fame filters
- Pet owner filters, which require a household that already contains a pet
- Dynasty filters, which require dynasty membership
- Relationship-bit filters, left to the vanilla system so it can find previously played Sims naturally
- Batuu, which uses its own pools and outfit system entirely. Pet households are blocked from spawning there
A Note on NPC Culling
Because this mod favors multi-Sim household templates, the total number of NPC Sims in your save may increase faster. The game has a built-in culling system that fires once the Sim population crosses an internal threshold, and newly created households from this mod, being homeless and not premade, are among the first to go.
If NPC households start disappearing after a session, your save is likely hitting that threshold. MC Command Center is recommended to disable the game's NPC culling if this becomes a problem for you.

Compatibility
The script mod patches Python directly making conflicts with other mods unlikely.
The included package file overrides one base game household template. It will conflict with any other mod that overrides the same resource:
| Tuning Name |
Type |
Group |
Instance |
HH_template_NPC_parents_2CT |
0CA4C78B |
00000000 |
0000000000019B29 |
This is the NPC household template for a two-parent, two-child family. The override corrects the member and relationship definitions so the template is selected and populated correctly by the NPC filter system.
- Occult, celebrity, dynasty, pet owner, and relationship-bit filters are intentionally left untouched.
- MC Command Center is recommended if you want to manage NPC culling directly.
