YUNG’s Better Caves Legacy

YUNG’s Better Caves Legacy brings the 1.16.5-generation YUNG’s Better Caves experience to older versions of Minecraft, introducing expansive underground cave networks, massive caverns, and more varied terrain generation.

Supported Minecraft versions:

• 1.6.4
• 1.7.10
• 1.8.9
• 1.12.2

This project backports the later Better Caves generation system rather than simply recreating the original legacy releases.

For 1.6.4, 1.7.10, and 1.8.9, this introduces Better Caves to versions of Minecraft that never officially supported it.

For 1.12.2, this modernizes the existing Better Caves experience using the newer cave-generation algorithms and behavior from the 1.16.5 generation.

Better Underground Generation

Better Caves replaces vanilla cave generation with a much more varied and interconnected underground environment.

Worlds can contain:

• Large, interconnected cave networks
• Massive underground caverns
• Multiple distinct cave and cavern styles
• Natural tunnels and surface-connected cave entrances
• Flooded caves and liquid-filled underground regions
• More natural transitions between different cave systems
• Improved generation around oceans and coastlines
• Vanilla ravines integrated alongside Better Caves terrain

The result is an underground world that feels larger, more varied, and more rewarding to explore than standard vanilla cave generation.

Based on the 1.16.5 Better Caves Generation

The original Better Caves evolved significantly between its earlier releases and the later Minecraft 1.16.5 generation.

Better Caves Legacy brings those newer generation systems back to older Minecraft versions, including improvements to:

• Cave and cavern noise generation
• Underground region distribution
• Terrain carving and natural transitions
• Surface-connected tunnel generation
• Flooded and liquid-filled cave systems
• Ocean and coastline protection
• Surface terrain and bedrock preservation
• Dimension-specific generation controls

Important for 1.12.2 players: This is not the same version of Better Caves available through the original project's official 1.12.2 releases. Better Caves Legacy uses cave-generation noise and behavior ported from the 1.16.5 version, offering a different underground generation experience.

Native Legacy Forge Integration

Each supported Minecraft version includes its own native terrain-generation integration, adapted to that version's world format and generation system.

Better Caves operates during terrain generation rather than modifying completed chunks afterward.

This allows caves, caverns, ravines, and surrounding terrain to generate together naturally.

When Better Caves is disabled or unsupported in a particular dimension, vanilla cave generation is preserved.

No separate YUNG’s API installation is required.

Configuration

Better Caves Legacy includes configurable underground generation settings for players and modpack developers.

Configuration options cover cave and cavern generation, underground features, and dimension-specific controls.

Generation is based on the world seed and configuration, allowing consistent terrain generation under matching conditions.

Compatibility & World Generation

Better Caves Legacy supports the native terrain systems of all four listed Minecraft versions.

A few things to keep in mind:

• Existing chunks will not be regenerated. Explore new terrain to find Better Caves generation.
• Custom terrain generators and heavily modified world-generation systems may require additional compatibility work.
• Unsupported world providers and vanilla Nether/End generation retain their normal cave-generation behavior.
• World height and block handling follow the limitations of each Minecraft version.
• Back up important worlds before installing, updating, or removing terrain-generation mods.
