trial of one

A roguelike combat trial featuring escalating waves, challenging bosses, advanced combat, progression, spells, souls, and build customization.

Trial of One is a combat-focused roguelike challenge for Minecraft Forge 1.20.1 built around increasingly difficult waves, boss fights, character progression, and skill-based combat.

Fight through a handcrafted arena, survive escalating encounters, improve your build, collect rewards, and prepare for increasingly dangerous bosses. The mod is designed around learning enemy patterns, managing resources, and improving your character rather than simply overpowering enemies with raw gear.

Main Features

  • Progressive wave-based Trial system
  • Multiple difficulty modes: Standard, Hardcore, and Abyss
  • Skill-based combat with parry, dodge, heavy attacks, feints, posture, slides, and lock-on
  • Advanced enemy behavior with targeting, positioning, flanking, retreating, and ranged combat logic
  • Boss encounters using both original systems and supported boss mods
  • Attribute progression:
    • Strength
    • Vitality
    • Agility
    • Technique
    • Speed
    • Armor Piercing

  • Individual loot caches using Lootr
  • Weapons and armor progression with reduced duplicate rewards
  • Iron's Spells integration and rare spellbooks in Trial loot
  • Shared stamina and magic resource system
  • Soul system: defeated enemies reward Souls
  • Death gravestone system for recovering lost Souls
  • Lost Echo battles where you fight a weakened version of yourself
  • Soul Broker NPC for purchasing accessories and upgrading equipment
  • Rings and necklaces with different bonuses
  • Up to 5 ring slots
  • Awakening system during late-game progression
  • A special final battle against a reflection of your own character
  • Built-in guide book given to new players

Difficulty

Standard is designed to be the most accessible version of the Trial. Death keeps your current wave.

Hardcore increases enemy pressure and sends you back several waves after death.

Abyss is intended as the extreme difficulty, with significantly stronger enemies and bosses. Dying resets the Trial run.

Progression

Each completed wave restores your health and gives you access to rewards. As you progress, stronger equipment, accessories, magic items, and more dangerous enemies become available.

Your choices matter: attributes, equipment, spellbooks, accessories, and Soul purchases can significantly change how your build plays.

Bosses

The Trial includes encounters using content from supported mods such as:

  • Cataclysm
  • Mowzie's Mobs
  • Bosses of Mass Destruction
  • Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks
  • Meet Your Fight

Late-game encounters are designed as proper boss fights rather than simple high-health enemies.

Combat

Combat is focused on timing and decision-making.

Parry attacks, dodge dangerous moves, break enemy posture, use Heavy attacks to punish openings, manage your stamina carefully, and use movement to control fights.

Enemies are designed to become more challenging through better behavior and encounter design rather than simply moving at extreme speeds.

Current Version

This is an early version of Trial of One. Balance, enemy AI, progression, bosses, rewards, and performance will continue to be improved as development continues.
