Description
The Deep Forest
Somewhere past the Overworld and the Nether lies a quiet, endless forest that time forgot.
The Deep Forest adds a brand-new dimension you reach through a portal you build yourself: a calm, dark woodland of gently rolling hills, shallow winding streams and tall deepwood trees, with no hostile mobs. Ever. It's a place to explore, build and breathe.
But it isn't just a pretty place. One block in the Deep Forest equals 64 blocks in the Overworld, which makes it the fastest way to travel your world. Name your portals, link them together, and turn the Deep Forest into your own private highway.
At a glance
- A whole new dimension: peaceful, mob-free, and made entirely of the Deep Forest biome
- A portal unlike any other: watch obsidian corrupt and drip away into a living, dripping doorway
- Super-fast travel: 1 block there = 64 blocks in the Overworld = 8 blocks in the Nether
- Deepwood: a new dark wood type with logs, planks, leaves, saplings and signs
- Black Tulips: a rare flower that only grows in the Deep Forest
- Portal Signs: name your portals, choose where they lead, and link them to exactly the portal you want
- Two-sided portals: one side to the Overworld, the other to the Nether
The Dimension
The Deep Forest is a single, peaceful biome that stretches on forever.
- Rolling, gentle terrain. The land rises and falls by only a few blocks, perfect for building.
- Shallow streams. Narrow rivers, only about three blocks wide and a couple of blocks deep, wind between the trees.
- Deepwood trees. Tall, dark trees with uneven, natural-looking canopies, spaced out so you can actually walk between them. Their roots dig deep into the ground.
- Grass and flowers. Grass and tall grass cover the forest floor, and if you're lucky you'll stumble on a patch of rare Black Tulips.
- No mobs. Nothing spawns here. No zombies, no creepers, not even animals. Just you and the trees.
- Soft, moody atmosphere. Dark greenish skies, deep fog colors and murky water give the forest its own quiet feel.
Dig down and you'll find layers of dirt over bedrock. The forest is all surface. What matters here is what's on top.
Building the Portal
Step 1: Compressed Xylem
Craft 1 Compressed Xylem (shapeless) from one of each:
- Dark Oak Log
- Warped Stem
- Spruce Log
- Mangrove Log
Step 2: Burnt Compressed Xylem
Smelt Compressed Xylem in a furnace to get Burnt Compressed Xylem, the charred, dark frame material for the portal. You'll need 6 for a frame, which means 6 of each log.
It's tough stuff: mining Burnt Compressed Xylem takes an iron pickaxe or better.
Step 3: The Frame
Build a small frame from 6 Burnt Compressed Xylem, leaving a 1 wide by 2 tall opening in the middle:
X
X X
X X
X
The frame can face any direction.
Step 4: Corrupt It
Place obsidian in both spots inside the frame. Once the opening is filled, the obsidian begins to corrupt: it darkens, drips black ink, and slowly melts away over a few seconds until all that's left is a thin, shimmering portal pane, just like a Nether portal.
Step through and you're in the Deep Forest. When you travel, you'll see the Deep Forest's own dark, dripping portal overlay instead of the usual purple swirl.
Good to know
- Breaking any part of the frame breaks the portal.
- When you arrive somewhere with no portal nearby, a new one is built for you on the surface, never buried underground.
- Portals remember their travel partner, so walking back through usually takes you right back to where you started, even with the huge 64x distance difference. If several portals lead to the same one, use a Portal Sign to pick which one it sends you back to.
Fast Travel
Distances in the Deep Forest are scaled way down:
| Deep Forest | Overworld | Nether | |:-:|:-:|:-:| | 1 block | 64 blocks | 8 blocks | | 16 blocks | 1,024 blocks | 128 blocks | | 100 blocks | 6,400 blocks | 800 blocks |
Only horizontal distance is scaled. Height stays the same.
Walk a short stroll in the forest, step back through a portal, and you could be thousands of blocks from where you started. Portals in the Overworld or the Nether always lead to the Deep Forest. Portals in the Deep Forest can lead to either the Overworld or the Nether: you choose with a Portal Sign (see below).
Deepwood
A rich, almost black wood type native to the Deep Forest.
- Deepwood Log: craft 1 log into 4 Deepwood Planks.
- Deepwood Leaves: dark, slightly see-through leaves (looks best on Fancy graphics). Collect them with shears or Silk Touch. Broken any other way, they sometimes drop Deepwood Saplings (and the odd stick).
- Deepwood Sapling: plant it anywhere to grow your own deepwood tree.
- Deepwood Sign: craft 6 Deepwood Planks + 1 Stick for 3 signs.
Black Tulips
A rare, dark flower that only grows in the Deep Forest. Patches are uncommon, but when you find one it's usually a big cluster.
- Craft a Black Tulip into Black Dye.
Portal Signs
Portal Signs are how you take control of your portal network.

Placing
- A Portal Sign can only go on the front or back of the top frame block of a lit portal, the side you walk into.
- One sign per portal. Placing a second one pops it right off.
- If the portal or frame is broken, the sign falls off.
Using it
Right-click the sign to open the portal menu:
Name your portal. Type a name and press Done. The name appears as floating green text on the sign, and it's how the portal shows up in other players' link lists. Clear name removes it.
Choose where it leads. (Deep Forest portals only.) Toggle between Leads to: Overworld and Leads to: Nether.
Link to a nearby portal. Normally a portal takes you to whichever portal is closest on the other side. Click Link to a nearby portal… to see a list of portals in the other dimension that are naturally nearby, and pick exactly which one this portal should take you to.
- Each list entry shows the portal's name, dimension, coordinates and distance.
- Your current destination in each dimension is shown in green as the current partner.
- Picking a different portal switches to it.
- Clear link goes back to the closest portal automatically.
- Links are one-way. Linking this portal doesn't change where the other portal sends people.
- You can never link two portals in the same dimension.
- Long lists scroll with your mouse wheel.
Admin override. Players in Creative mode and server operators also get an Admin override button that lists portals from a much wider area, for connecting portals that are far apart.
Anyone can use a Portal Sign. There are no owners.
Two-Sided Portals
Here's where it gets fun. A Deep Forest portal can lead to both the Overworld and the Nether at the same time, depending on which side you walk in from.
How to set it up:
- Put a Portal Sign on your Deep Forest portal.
- Set it to Leads to: Overworld and travel through once.
- Come back, set it to Leads to: Nether and travel through again. (Or simply link it to one portal in each dimension from the sign.)
Once the portal has a destination in both dimensions, it splits:
- The sign side leads to the Overworld, marked with a floating "→ Overworld" label.
- The back side leads to the Nether, marked with a floating "→ Nether" label.
Which side counts is based on which way you're facing as you walk in. Take the sign down and the portal goes back to following its toggle. Put it back up and the split returns.
One portal in the forest, two worlds on either side.
