Smiley's Better Brain

🧠 Give Verity a smarter brain.

A lightweight add-on for Verity JE that swaps Verity's default text AI (Groq / OpenRouter Llama models) for Google Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite. Same companion energy — upgraded engine, better memory, and a happier default vibe (with a dark side if you push him).

• 🧬 Compatible with Smiley's Better Voice so Verity can still speak with Fish / Cartesia TTS

🚀 Why Gemini over the default models?

Verity JE defaults to Llama models via Groq/OpenRouter (e.g. Llama 3.1 Instant / Llama 3.3 70B). Those are solid — Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite is built for a stronger everyday Verity:

In short: better reasoning for character chat, huge context headroom, speed, and native vision when you stack Better Vision — without replacing Verity JE.

🧠 Memory

Verity JE only keeps the last 10 chat messages by default. Better Brain improves both sides:

Short-term memory

• Configurable size (10–100 messages, default 20)
• Saved with the world — survives restarts
• Includes idle lines Verity starts on his own
• Higher values = better recall of recent chat, but replies may be a bit slower

Long-term memory

• Say “remember that…” / “don’t forget…” and Verity stores durable facts
• Facts stay available after they leave the short-term window
• Ask him to forget something (or forget everything) when you want them gone
• Toggle off in config if you don’t want it

Memories are per world — they don’t carry over to a different save.

😊 Tone tweaks (built-in)

Better Brain gently adjusts how Gemini uses Verity’s live prompt (without replacing Verity JE):

• Default vibe leans happy, cheerful, and energetic
• He can still show a darker / sharper side if you disrespect him
• Low-karma “resentful / neutral” wording is softened so he doesn’t go cold as easily
• Light level / brightness talk only when you bring it up (no more constant “is it bright?” loops)

✅ Before You Start

⚠️ This mod works alongside Verity JE — it does not replace it.

🚀 Quick Start

1. Drop the JAR into your mods folder and launch Minecraft
2. Create a Gemini API key at aistudio.google.com/apikey
3. In-game: Mods → Smiley's Better Brain → Config
4. Keep Enable Smiley's Better Brain on, paste your Gemini API Key, hit Done
5. Chat with Verity as usual 👋
6. Optional: pick a Thinking level, raise Short-term memory, or tell him to remember something

👁️ Better Brain + Better Vision

When both mods are installed and Brain has a key:

1. Wrap something in ** to trigger vision (same Better Vision trigger)
2. Vision skips its separate describe-the-image call
3. Screenshot + player message go to Gemini in one multimodal request
4. You only need the Brain API key for that path

Vision older than 1.1.3 will fail Forge’s version check if Brain is installed. Update Vision, or remove it if you only want Brain’s text upgrade.

🛠️ Troubleshooting

🔴 Silent / fallback replies — Confirm Brain is enabled and your Gemini key is pasted correctly. Invalid keys usually show up in the game log as Gemini HTTP errors.

🟡 “Slow down — Gemini is limited to 15 requests per minute” — Brain rate-limits Gemini usage. Wait a moment and try again.

🟣 Forgot something after restart? — Short-term chat and long-term memories persist with that world. Load the same save; they don’t transfer between worlds.

• 🌐 Requires an internet connection while Brain is active
• 📊 Gemini usage depends on your Google AI Studio / Gemini API quota (Brain also caps at 15 requests/minute)
