Russian Roulette Gifts: CurseForge project description
Paste-ready copy for the CurseForge project page. The Summary goes in the short "Summary" field. Everything below the second divider is the long description (CurseForge accepts Markdown). Written for 0.2.1 on 2026-10-15. Updated for 0.3.0 (Empty Gift Box) on 2026-10-16.
Summary (short field)
CurseForge caps this field at 256 characters and shows it as plain text. The line below is 203 characters.
Open a Mystery Gift: diamonds or a creeper? Or catch mobs in an Empty Gift Box, hand it to a friend, and watch 30 zombies jump out. Server-side only: vanilla players can join without installing anything.
Russian Roulette Gifts
Every gift is a gamble. Craft a Mystery Gift, place it down, and right-click to open it. Inside could be a stack of diamonds, a legendary sword, or a creeper with your name on it. You never know until you open it.
Or make your own surprise. Catch mobs in an Empty Gift Box, and it turns into a perfect copy of a Mystery Gift. Hand it to a friend and watch their face when a horde of zombies jumps out.
A subscriber suggested a craftable gift system. We added the twist: the mod picks what's inside, not the player. Then a player suggested catching mobs in gifts, and that went in too.
The gift
P S P P = paper
D G D S = string
P S P D = any dye G = gold ingot
The recipe shows up in your recipe book as soon as you pick up paper or gold. The gold ingot is the stake: gifts cost something, so you can't farm free diamonds out of them.
A placed gift looks like a wrapped present. Break it and you get it back, still unopened.
What's inside
| Tier | Odds | What you might get |
|---|---|---|
| π₯ Disaster | 20% | Primed TNT, a creeper, a swarm of angry bees, an anvil from the sky, levitation, blindness |
| π Cursed | 20% | Beautiful enchanted gear with Curse of Vanishing or Curse of Binding hidden in it |
| 𧦠Junk | 10% | A gag gift, like a Lump of Coal ("You've been naughty"), Premium Dirt or an IOU, plus a few gold nuggets back |
| β Good | 35% | Iron, gold, food, and tools, weapons and armour with random enchantments |
| π Jackpot | 15% | Diamonds, an enchanted golden apple, over-enchanted gear, more gifts, or a classic item from our family server |
The classic items are Swim Fins, Jump Boots, the Copper Pickaxe, the Ginsu Iron Sword and the Ouchy Diamond Sword (Sharpness X).
Opening a gift shows a big title with the result, along with sounds and particles for each tier.
π Empty Gift Box: catch mobs, prank your friends
P S P P = paper
D D S = string
P S P D = any dye (centre left empty)
It's the Mystery Gift recipe without the gold ingot. The Empty Gift Box is pale pink, so you can tell it apart from a real gift in your inventory.
Catching mobs
- Hit a mob. One hit is enough. You don't have to wear it down.
- Right-click it with the box within 5 seconds. Poof: it's in the box, and you see π¦ 1/30.
- Keep going. Hit the next mob and right-click it with the same box. Mix anything you like: zombies, creepers, skeletons, cows, villagers, even a Warden or the Wither if you're brave. One box holds up to 30 mobs.
Holding a stack of empty boxes? Only one box from the stack is used, and the rest stay empty.
The prank
As soon as the first mob goes in, the box turns into a perfect copy of a Mystery Gift: same look, same name, same "Open at your own riskβ¦" label. Nobody can tell the difference. Only you see the count: it shows after every catch, and you can check it any time by right-clicking into the air while holding the box.
Give it to a friend, or leave it somewhere tempting. When they place it and open it:
SURPRISE! Every mob jumps out at once, spread around the gift. The hostile ones go straight for whoever opened it.
Good to know
- Mobs keep everything. Names, armour, health, a villager's job and trades, a baby staying a baby: it all comes back out exactly as it went in.
- A filled box is still a block. Place it, break it and pick it up again, and the mobs stay inside. Explosions don't spill them either.
- Can't be boxed: players, the Ender Dragon, and mobs that are riding something or being ridden.
- Mobs belong to the world. Captured mobs are saved with the world, so a filled box carried to a different world or server opens empty. "They escaped!"
- No duplicating mobs. Copies of a filled box, made in creative mode for example, all point to the same mobs. Only the first one opened releases them, and the rest open empty.
Server settings
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
include_empty_gift_feature |
true |
Turns the Empty Gift Box recipe and catching on or off. The recipe change takes effect on restart. |
hostile_mob_capture |
true |
Set it to false to allow only peaceful and neutral mobs, no zombies or creepers. |
max_mobs_per_box |
30 |
How many mobs one box can hold, from 1 to 64. |
Server-side only
You don't need to install anything on the client. Put the mod on a Fabric server, and players with a completely vanilla client can craft, place and open gifts, and catch mobs. It also works in single-player.
There are no new blocks or items. The gift is a vanilla player head with its own look, so worlds stay clean if you ever remove the mod. Gifts that were already crafted just become decorative heads.
Commands (op)
/rrgifts give [count] [players]: hand out gifts, for events or testing./rrgifts empty [count] [players]: hand out Empty Gift Boxes, for pranks or testing./rrgifts reload: reload the loot config without restarting.
Configure the loot
Everything is in config/russian-roulette-gifts.json: tier odds, items, counts, enchantments, mobs, effects and messages, plus the Empty Gift Box settings above.
- Mistakes don't break your server. A typo or an item that doesn't exist is reported in the log with its exact location, and the mod falls back to the default loot.
- Updates are safe. If you never edited the config, it is upgraded automatically when the mod updates. If you did edit it, your changes are kept, and the log tells you when there's new default loot to compare against.
Gifts and boxes can't be opened in adventure mode or inside spawn protection.
