Description
RIFTFALL
Something tore the sky open. On the other side is the Riftlands, a world of permanent dusk, glowing fungal forests and the wreckage of a war-machine civilisation. Past that, a shattered moon. And at the very end, sleeping in a ruined arena, is the thing that built it all.
RIFTFALL is a sci-fi adventure mod in the spirit of the Twilight Forest: two new dimensions, a chain of lair bosses that unlock one another, an arsenal of fully animated 3D energy weapons, and a final boss that is not a mob you fight. It is a place you climb.
THE RIFT COLOSSUS
A 48-block-tall titan of armour plates, hydraulic pistons and glowing conduits. It lies asleep, face-down, in a ruined arena somewhere in the Riftlands. Get too close and it wakes up. A full cinematic plays as the giant drags itself upright and roars.
- Climb it. Rungs, ledges, armour plates and walkways are all solid, and you can stand on it while it walks and turns. It carries you with it.
- Break it apart. You can't scratch its armour. Its six weak spots open behind hazard shutters (knees, shoulder vents, a reactor core on its back, the crown). Each opening only takes a burst of damage before it seals again.
- It fights back. Stomps, fist slams, sweeping arms, steam blasts, missile barrages, carpet bombing, lightning called down on you, and violent shakes to throw climbers off. Hold on with your grip.
- It isn't alone. It tears the Rift open and summons echoes of the four lair bosses to fight beside it, plus drop pods full of minions.
- It gets angrier. Every pair of weak spots you destroy changes its phase, its attacks and its music. In phase three its armour blows off.
- It falls. Kill it and a death cinematic plays as it topples to the ground. The wreck stays in the arena forever, smoking.
Use the Colossus Beacon (crafted from the four boss relics) to find where it sleeps.
TWO DIMENSIONS
The Riftlands
Reached through a Rift Pedestal and a Rift Key. Four regions, each with its own dangers:
- Glowcap Forest: towering bioluminescent mushrooms, Lumen Deer and Void Stalkers.
- Crystal Fields: violet plains split by crystal spires, and nests of Crystal Crawlers.
- Ashen Wastes: a poisoned grey desert. The sky itself irradiates you unless you wear a sealed suit.
- Neon Marsh: glowing shallows where Marsh Lurkers wait under the surface.
The Shattered Moon
A field of floating islands in endless night. Low gravity: you jump higher and fall softly. If you fall off, you drop back into the Riftlands sky instead of dying. Star Crystals glow in the moon rock, and somewhere out there the Void Citadel floats on its own island.
FOUR LAIR BOSSES
Each one guards a hand-built lair. Each one drops a relic that unlocks the next step. Each one now has a telegraphed signature attack, called out on screen before it lands.
| Boss | Lair | Signature attack |
|---|---|---|
| Sentinel Prime | Derelict Outpost | Orbital Laser: sky strikes that lead your movement and leave craters |
| The Hive Queen | Crystal Hive | Brood Clutch: eggs around you that hatch unless you smash them first |
| The Chrono Warden | Chrono Spire | Time Bomb: arms where you stand, then rewinds into a blast (it can also rewind you five seconds) |
| The Void Leviathan | Void Citadel (Moon) | Black Hole: drags everything in, then explodes |
Every boss has a custom pixel-art boss bar with its own portrait, lettering and animated fill.
AN ACTUAL ARSENAL
These guns are not reskinned bows. They are 3D models held in your arms, with aim-down-sights, reloads, inspect animations, tracers and recoil.
- Plasma Pistol: 12 shots, sets targets alight.
- Pulse Rifle: full auto, 32-round magazine.
- Scatter Blaster: eight pellets, brutal up close.
- Rail Cannon: hold to charge, release to fire a beam that pierces everything in a line.
- Singularity Launcher: fires a slow orb that collapses into a black hole.
Melee: Plasma Saber, Crystal Blade, Gravity Hammer (right-click ground slam), Void Scythe (life steal), and the Colossus Breaker greatsword.
Controls: left click fires, right click aims, R reloads, I inspects.
GEAR
- 3D armour sets. Riftium gives Haste. The Exo Suit gives night vision, speed, step-up and radiation immunity. Void gives resistance.
- Jetpack: hold jump in mid-air.
- Blink Device: short-range teleport.
- Ore Scanner: outlines ores through stone.
- Mining Laser, Medkits and Stim Packs.
- Rift Locator: points to the next boss you have not beaten.
- The Fabricator: a sci-fi workbench that doubles your alloy and makes Energy Cells.
- The Rift Codex: an in-game guidebook that explains everything.
GETTING STARTED
- Craft a Rift Pedestal: obsidian, amethyst shards and an eye of ender.
- Craft a Rift Key: diamond, ender pearl, glowstone dust and an amethyst shard.
- Place the pedestal and use the key on it. A portal tears open above it.
- Stand in it. Welcome to the Riftlands. You'll get a Rift Codex and a Rift Locator on your first visit.
FAQ
Does it work on servers? Yes. Install it on both the server and every client.
Can I use it in a modpack? Yes, go ahead. A link back to this page is appreciated.
Fabric or NeoForge? Forge 1.20.1 only, for now.
The Colossus is huge. Is it laggy? Its whole body is rebuilt in under a millisecond per frame, and its collision runs on the client, so climbing feels solid.
Where is the Colossus? It sleeps about 900 blocks from the Riftlands spawn. Its direction depends on your world seed. Use the Colossus Beacon to find it.
