RSE Interconnect Engineering Update
This update revisits several early RSE transmission, measurement, and wiring components using the newer engineering design rules developed later in the project: explicit signal domains, truthful ports, clear topology roles, split-network cleanup, and meaningful separation between transmission media and junction devices.
Updated Components
Insulated Redstone Signal Cable
- Retains the vanilla-compatible
0–15redstone signal range. - Uses the explicit
REDSTONE_ANALOGengineering domain. - Remains a two-ended insulated transmission cable rather than an unrestricted branch node.
- Cutting a cable now forces each separated network component to recompute independently.
- Prevents stale or “ghost” redstone signals from remaining after a network is disconnected.
Insulated Redstone Junction Box
- Updated to use the same
REDSTONE_ANALOGcontract as Insulated Redstone Signal Cable instead of a genericBUSport. - Clearly acts as the explicit branching component of the insulated redstone network.
- Split-network recomputation is performed when the junction or nearby cable topology changes.
Lapis Precision Trace
- Retains the dedicated
0–100precision signal domain. - Intended for higher-resolution engineering signals that should not be restricted to vanilla redstone’s 16 discrete levels.
- Engineering HUD/Jade ports now only appear on sides that are physically connected.
- No longer reports nonexistent NORTH/SOUTH/EAST/WEST ports when the trace is not connected in those directions.
Quartz Timing Trace
- Retains the dedicated timing/clock domain.
- Carries synchronization information such as active clock state and period rather than ordinary redstone power.
- Engineering ports now exactly follow the real physical trace topology.
- Better separates timing infrastructure from ordinary control wiring.
Amethyst Resonance Dust
- Retains its resonance-domain behavior carrying frequency and amplitude information.
- Engineering ports now match actual connected trace directions.
- Removing a resonance trace now explicitly recomputes neighboring resonance-network components.
- Prevents stale resonance state after a network is split.
Glowglass Optical Fiber
- Retained as the standard passive two-ended optical transmission medium.
- Continues to carry optical intensity/channel information.
- Ordinary fiber remains transmission-only rather than acting as an unrestricted branching device.
Optical Splitterremains the proper device for deliberate 1→2 optical power division.
Optical Fiber Junction / Optical Service Splice
The previous Optical Fiber Junction had too little functional difference from ordinary optical fiber.
It has now been redesigned as a true Optical Service Splice.
- Remains a two-ended optical connection.
- Does not replace the Optical Splitter.
- Adds a new
SERVICE_OPENmaintenance state. CLOSEDjoins both fiber segments normally.SERVICE OPENphysically isolates both sides of the optical network.- Opening the splice recomputes the two separated optical network sections.
- Closing the splice restores continuity and recomputes the rejoined network.
- Shift + Right Click toggles the maintenance isolation state.
- This gives the block a real purpose for maintenance, fault localization, and segmented optical testing.
The optical system now has three clearly separated roles:
Glowglass Optical Fiber
= transmission
Optical Service Splice
= maintenance / isolation / reconnection
Optical Splitter
= intentional optical branching and power division
Copper Wire
- Retained as the normal two-ended electrical conductor in the copper circuit domain.
- Continues to represent electrical-network wiring rather than redstone control wiring.
- Existing split-network cleanup behavior remains in place.
Copper Cable Junction Box
Retained as the explicit copper-network branching node.
Clearly separated from ordinary Copper Wire:
- Copper Wire = transmission segment
- Copper Junction = topology branch
Measurement Probe / Signal Probe
- Retained because it already has a distinct engineering purpose.
- Acts as a non-invasive measurement interface.
- Reads a target signal without becoming part of the control path.
- Routes measurement information toward instrumentation instead of behaving like ordinary redstone wiring.
Instrumentation Bus Cable
- Retained as a dedicated measurement/instrumentation network.
- Does not behave as vanilla redstone.
- Used to connect probes, analyzers, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other measurement devices.
- Keeps measurement infrastructure separate from the system being measured.
Diamond Shard Visual Update
Diamond Shard previously looked too similar to a full vanilla Diamond.
It has now been visually redesigned:
- No longer reuses the full vanilla diamond item icon.
- Uses a smaller shard-like crystal model.
- Has a thinner, more fragmented appearance.
- Is visually distinguishable from a complete Diamond in inventory, dropped-item, and held-item views.

Transmission media are now expected to have:
- Explicit engineering domains
- Truthful physical ports
- Clear directionality
- Clear distinction between cable and junction roles
- Correct cleanup after topology changes
- No persistent ghost network state
- No unnecessary duplication between blocks
- Server-authoritative network behavior
- Inspectable engineering interfaces

========= 165 GAME TESTS COMPLETE IN 2.321 s =========
All 165 required tests passed :)
Two additional regression tests were added specifically for this update:
insulatedRedstoneCutClearsSeparatedOutput
opticalServiceSpliceIsolatesAndRestores
These tests verify that disconnected redstone networks correctly lose stale output and that the Optical Service Splice can reliably isolate and restore an optical network.
Overall Result
The early RSE wiring blocks are no longer treated simply as different-looking alternatives to redstone dust.
Each transmission system now has a clearer engineering role:
Redstone Cable
→ vanilla-compatible control signal
Lapis Trace
→ high-resolution precision signal
Quartz Trace
→ timing and synchronization
Amethyst Resonance Dust
→ frequency and resonance information
Copper Wire
→ electrical circuit network
Glowglass Fiber
→ optical transmission
Instrumentation Bus
→ measurement and instrumentation network
The result is a more coherent engineering system where every cable, trace, junction, probe, and service device has a specific reason to exist.
