Description
Rain and Water (R&W)
Rain and Water makes weather and water look natural instead of blocky. It is a client-side Fabric mod: install it on your own game, no server install needed, and it works in singleplayer and on any server.
Features
- Natural rain — realistic rain streaks with an adjustable thickness, plus ring-and-crown splashes and ripples where drops land. Vanilla rain particles are replaced.
- Clearer, realistic water — less blue and more transparent near you, with refraction, depth absorption tinted by biome, fresnel, sun and moon glints, rain ring ripples and soft shore foam.
- Reflections — screen-space reflections on water and puddles: blocks, terrain and bright lights are mirrored, and the sky is used where nothing is hit.
- Wet ground — after about 10 seconds of rain, ground darkens in raindrop dots, soaks through, gets a slight sheen, then dries in patches once the rain stops.
- Puddles — puddles form on open ground, bleed about a quarter block under roofs, and evaporate over roughly 4 minutes.
- Wet players, mobs and items — entities darken in patchy blotches and get a wet sheen for about a minute. They drip glassy teardrops for 20–30 seconds after leaving rain or water, and dropped items dim.
- Wakes — players and mobs leave trailing rings in water, with a bigger ring and crown when something falls in or crosses the surface.
- Portal Gun support — if the Portal Gun mod is installed, its portals glow in water and puddle reflections. R&W finds them on its own, so nothing needs to be configured.
Requirements
- Minecraft 26.2
- Fabric Loader 0.19.0 or newer
- Fabric API
- Java 25
- A GPU that can run the vanilla renderer at your usual settings. Reflections and the water shader add per-frame cost, so lower
reflectionStepsor turnreflectionsoff on weak hardware.
Configuration
A file is created at config/rainandwater.properties on first launch. Options include reflections, reflectionSteps (default 24), dropsPerColumn (rain thickness, default 9) and wakes. Each option can also be overridden with a -Drainandwater.<option> JVM flag.
Compatibility
Tested alongside a large modpack including ImmediatelyFast, Biomes O' Plenty and Terralith with no errors from R&W. It has not been tested with Iris or shader packs, so treat those as unsupported for now.
Known limits
- Only things on screen can appear in reflections.
- Damp ground shows the sky tint only; full block reflections are on water and puddles.
- Villager robes and armor layers do not get the wet sheen yet.
