One Trick

Tools bind to the first block or mob they master. Build a specialist toolbelt, clear bindings at a grindstone, or try Daily Driver mode each new dawn.

One Trick

A tool learns one trick. The first thing it masters is the only thing it will ever be good at.

One Trick turns ordinary Minecraft tools into specialists. Break stone with a fresh diamond pickaxe and it becomes your Stone pickaxe: full vanilla performance on stone and deepslate, but bare-hand speed and no tool drops from diamond ore. Kill a cow with a fresh sword and you have made the Cow Sword—excellent against animals, one damage against everything else.

The result is a survival challenge built around memorable tools, small mistakes and an increasingly strange toolbelt. Every commitment creates a story without deleting the tool or ending the world.

How binding works

  • Pickaxes, axes, shovels and hoes bind after their first successful block break, but only when they were the correct tool and could harvest that block.
  • Swords bind to the category of the first mob they kill. A hit alone does not commit the sword with the default settings.
  • Inside its category, a bound tool behaves exactly like vanilla.
  • Outside its category, a mining tool behaves like an empty hand, while a sword deals one damage and cannot sweep.
  • Unbound tools stay completely vanilla until a qualifying break or kill. Looted and traded tools begin unbound.

Build a specialist toolbelt

The default Broad preset keeps the challenge practical. Pickaxes can specialize in categories such as Stone, Common Ore, Precious Ore, Netherrack, End Stone, Building Blocks, Metal, Obsidian and Ice. Axes distinguish logs, joinery and fungus; shovels cover dirt, sand, snow, soul blocks and clay; hoes cover leaves, plants and sculk. Swords recognize animals, undead, creepers, illagers, arthropods, Nether mobs, End mobs, slimes, aquatic mobs, players and more.

Every tool kind has an Odds & Ends category, so a valid tool is never bound to nothing. Players who want a harsher challenge can enable the Narrow preset, which splits ores individually and separates wood by species.

Clear or preserve a binding

  • Use a grindstone to clear a binding and start again.
  • Anvil repairs, renaming and enchantments preserve the left tool’s binding.
  • Netherite upgrades preserve the original tool’s specialty.
  • Using the wrong tool still costs durability, so every decision matters.

Daily Driver mode

Daily Driver is an optional second mode. The first tool you use after dawn becomes your only effective tool for that Minecraft day. Lose it and you may choose another; reach the next sunrise and the choice resets.

Configurable and datapack-friendly

Choose Broad or Narrow categories, per-tool binding or Daily Driver, grindstone rebinding or permanent commitment, hand speed or a gentler outside-category penalty, sword binding on kill or hit, and optional feedback. Exemptions can keep selected tools fully vanilla.

Categories are data-driven JSON. Datapacks can add categories, replace the built-in sets or reorganize the challenge without changing the mod.

Compatibility

  • Minecraft: 1.21.1
  • Loader: NeoForge 21.1.0 or newer
  • Installation: required on both the client and server
  • Registries: adds no blocks, items, entities or recipes; bindings live on vanilla tools

Make the right first swing. Your tool will remember it.
