Lootlings

Your chest just grew legs: wake any chest with a key and it follows you, carries your loot, bites your enemies and keeps your things when you die.

Description

Lootlings

Your chest just grew legs. Turn a Lootling Key in any chest and it wakes up as a Lootling: a loyal little chest on four stubby legs that follows you everywhere, carries everything that was inside, picks up the loot you leave behind and snaps at whatever attacks you.

They run to you with their lids clacking and their tongues out.

A Chest With Legs

A Lootling follows you through forests, caves and even portals, and teleports to you if it falls behind. Tell it to stay and it sits down like a chest; tell it to wander and it strolls around one spot. It floats in water, never takes fall damage and pops back next to you if it drops into the void.

It has a face of its own: big round eyes that follow you, glance around and blink, rosy cheeks, a happy "^ ^" when you give it a treat, sleepy "u u" eyes at night and a scared "> <" when it hides. It waddles from foot to foot, yawns now and then and sticks its tongue out after a run.

It never dies of an ordinary hit: beaten, it faints and falls asleep as a chest until you wake it (more on that below). Treats (cookies, apples, berries, bread, pie, honey, cake) heal it and make it hop with joy, and when it sits at night it falls asleep.

The Lootling Key

Craft the Lootling Key from an amethyst shard, a gold ingot and a gold nugget, then use it on a chest, a trapped chest or one half of a double chest. The key stays bound to the Lootling that wakes up: one key, one Lootling. Every Lootling gets a lock of its own colour, and the gem of its key glows in the same colour, so you always know which key opens which chest. Want another colour? Pick one of the sixteen in its screen, or use a dye on it: the key follows.

Hold a key and the action bar shows which way its Lootling is and how far. Use it to call that Lootling to you; sneak and use it to whistle all your Lootlings nearby. Lost a key? Sneak and use a blank key on your Lootling: the new key takes over and the old one goes blank.

Its Own Screen

Right-click your Lootling to look inside: give it a name (and choose whether it floats above it), and find up to six rows of storage and a side panel with your Lootling itself, its health and the buttons that matter. Follow, stay or wander; collect items on or off; guard you on or off; sort the inventory; deposit your whole inventory (shift-click: only what it already holds); take it all; or pick the colour of its lock. The Magnet Charm and the Ender Link sit in their own slots: take them out and put them back whenever you like. The eye under each upgrade hides or shows it on your Lootling, and it keeps working either way. The moon in the corner of its picture sends it to sleep as a chest. Your Lootling hops or gulps in its preview.

Bands and Plating

Use the upgrades on your Lootling, in order. Iron Bands add a fourth row, Golden Bands a fifth and Diamond Bands a sixth: as roomy as a double chest. Each tier also raises its health, armor and bite. Netherite Plating makes it fireproof, so it walks through lava, and it resists knockback.

Planks of any wood give your Lootling a new coat: oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, mangrove, cherry, bamboo, crimson, warped, pale oak (26.x) and poplar (26.3).

Thirteen Lootlings in two rows, one for every wood, some of them hopping with hearts

Magnet and Ender Link

The Magnet Charm pulls items into your Lootling from seven blocks around and throws the experience orbs over to you. Park one under your mob farm and it fills itself. With the Ender Link, a little glowing ender pearl circles your Lootling, and its key calls it from anywhere: it appears at your side, even from another dimension.

Lootling Chests

Beat a Lootling and it does not die: it faints and falls asleep as a chest right where it stood, lid shut and eyes closed. Nothing goes on attacking a sleeping chest, so whatever beat it looks for a new target: keep your sword ready. It keeps everything it carries, heals while it sleeps and wakes up when you use its key on it or call it. You can send it to sleep yourself too: click the moon in its screen and it waits as a chest exactly where you left it. Its bands stay on; the magnet, the pearl and the lock colour are tucked away until it wakes.

Break a sleeping chest of yours like any chest: what it holds spills out, and the chest drops as an item with your Lootling inside, name, bands and upgrades included. Put it down wherever you like: it is the same Lootling, and its key still fits. Craft new Lootling Chests from a chest and any planks, place them like chests and fill them. Give them bands, a Magnet Charm, an Ender Link and a name, and wake one with a blank key whenever you want a new Lootling: it gets up with everything you gave it.

Keeper of Your Things

Die near your Lootling and it swallows your whole inventory before anything hits the ground. It sits on the spot, glowing, and waits; the key leads you back to it. One click and every item goes back into its own slot, armor and shield included.

Wild Lootlings

Not every loot chest in a dungeon, mineshaft or ruin is a chest. Open the wrong one and a wild Lootling bursts out with burning eyes and fangs. Beat it until it hides in its shell, then feed it a cookie: it becomes yours, loot and all, and a blank key sneak-used on it becomes its own. Left alone, it settles back into a chest.

Getting Started

  1. Install NeoForge for Minecraft 1.21.1, 26.2 or 26.3 and put the Lootlings jar into the mods folder of the client and the server.
  2. Find an amethyst geode and some gold, and craft a Lootling Key.
  3. Use the key on a chest. Everything else is in the recipe book and in the Lootlings creative tab.

Good to Know

  • One jar for Minecraft 1.21.1, 26.2 and 26.3 on NeoForge. Needed on the client and the server, no other mods required.
  • In 21 languages: English, Russian, German, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Polish, Czech, French, Spanish (Spain and Latin America), Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), Italian, Dutch, Swedish, Turkish, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese.
  • Server config: the chance of wild Lootlings and the loot tables they skip, the keeper of things and its range, whether only the owner can open a Lootling, following through portals, the Ender Link across dimensions, the collect and magnet radius, and a limit per player.
  • Seventeen advancements, from "It's Alive!" to "Treasure Parade".
