You respawn, the death screen is gone, and ten minutes later you cannot remember where you died or what killed you.
Death Log writes each death down and lets you read the list whenever you want. Type /deathlog in chat:
#1 2026-10-01 01:01 UTC overworld (20, 111, 20) — Steve fell from a high place #2 2026-10-01 01:00 UTC overworld (-5, 160, -4) — Steve was killed
Where to look Only in chat, and only when you ask. There is no HUD, no gravestone, no teleport and no map marker. Each line is: the number (1 is the newest), the time in UTC, the dimension, the X Y Z where you died, and the death message. Before your first death it answers "No deaths recorded yet."
What it does for you
- Die as usual. Every death is written down, nothing to switch on.
- Type /deathlog whenever you want to find the spot or remember the cause.
- The history lives in the world's own save folder (deathlog.json), so it stays with the world.
Death Log or Death Point Marker? They solve different problems. Death Log is a list: your last 20 deaths, where and how, read in chat on demand. It does not guide you anywhere. Hullspark Death Point Marker is a line on your screen that points at your most recent death while you walk back. Pick the one you need. Both have been loaded in the same game without errors (1.21.11 and 26.3), but the newest Death Point Marker for 1.21.11 has not been tried together with Death Log yet.
What it keeps
- Only the 20 most recent deaths: time, dimension, X Y Z and the death message. It does not save your items.
- Each player sees only their own deaths.
- A missing or damaged deathlog.json should not crash the game. A damaged file is renamed with a .corrupt-<time> suffix and the log starts empty. (Covered by unit tests only.)
Where to install it
- Singleplayer: install it like any Fabric mod. It works right away.
- Dedicated server: install it on the server. Players should not need it. (Not yet tested on a dedicated server.)
Requirements Fabric Loader and Fabric API. Pick the file for your Minecraft version: 1.21.11 or 26.3 (26.3 needs Java 25). Both versions behave the same.
Known limitations
- Times are shown in UTC, not your local time.
- Death messages are stored in the server's language, not each player's. A death caused by another mod's damage type without a translation may show as a raw key.
- It tells you where you died. It does not guide you back, show a marker or protect your items.
- Tested in singleplayer only: not on a dedicated server, and not with a vanilla client joining a server that has the mod.
- Checked on a real game: /kill, a real fall, the Nether, and still there after restarting the game. Other causes are not all checked.
- If a totem of undying saves you, nothing is written down, and the next real death still gets its own message.
- The 20-entry limit, the totem of undying case and a damaged file are covered by unit tests only, not checked in a real game.
