Embers and Ashes: A Respawn Overhaul

A mod that replaces the respawn system with one inspired by Dark Souls

Souls-style respawning, built for Minecraft.

Features

Copper Braziers: Your new respawn point, crafted like a cauldron from copper with iron bars and a campfire - Places unlit, kindle it to make it your spawn - Rest at a lit brazier to set your spawn and open its menu. Resting makes you sit and gaze into the fire, as you would in Dark Souls - Name your braziers from the menu, with a name tag, or in an anvil - Copper weathers over time and a fully oxidized brazier goes cold - Scrape it with an axe to restore it, or wax it with honeycomb to keep it burning forever

Dimensional Braziers: Overworld and Soul Braziers can be lit with flint and steel or a fire charge - Soul Braziers, made with a soul campfire, are the only flame that takes hold in the Nether - In the End, use an Overworld Brazier lit with Dragon's Breath

Rekindling: Feed a lit brazier the embers you take from defeated invaders to carve glowing glyphs into its sides - Each glyph wards a wider area against monster spawns and makes travel to and from that brazier cheaper

Travel: Fast travel between every brazier you've kindled, with a cinematic flight across a map of your braziers - Costs an Eye of Ender plus XP - Reach the End from the Overworld or Nether for a flat cost - The Overworld and Nether can't reach each other, since you already have Nether Portals - No traveling with enemies nearby

Ember Pouch: A temporary spawn point - Leave embers where you stand and rise from them on your next death - Marked by a tall column of signal smoke only you can see - 3 charges, refilled by clicking coal or charcoal onto the pouch - Can't be used in the heat of battle

Smoldering Ashes: Die and you keep your hotbar, armor and offhand - Everything else and all your XP stay behind in your ashes - Your own ashes glow through walls and send up a column of fire - Walk into them to take it all back - They never despawn and can't be destroyed, but each time you die before reaching them, more of them crumbles away - Died in lava or the void? Your ashes wait on the last solid ground you stood on

Invaders: As you make your mark on the world, dark spirits come to hunt you - Each has their own look, gear and fighting style, and some bring help - They only strike when you stray from your braziers, and they won't let you get away easily - Die while hunted and they'll guard your ashes until you take them back - Defeat them to claim a unique charm

Charms: Each invader carries a charm with its own power, from small advantages to game-changing gifts - They work from anywhere in your inventory

The Final Invader: Defeat the strongest of them to earn his blade, and the right to forge armor and a shield of your own, stronger than netherite

Beds: Beds still skip the night but no longer set your spawn - With no brazier or embers you rise at world spawn, or at a respawn anchor in the Nether

Compatibility: Fabric 1.20.1, requires Fabric API

Optional:

  • Traveler's Backpack. A worn backpack is placed safely where you died, and backpacks in your inventory drop on their own, never despawn or burn, and never go into your ashes

  • Mod Menu. In-game settings

Turn it all off with /gamerule keepInventory true
