Total Bowverhaul

A bow rework/overhaul mod for Minecraft

Total Bowverhaul

An archery overhaul: five bows in four tiers, fifteen arrow types, tripwires, crossbows with attachments, weak spots to aim for, slow-motion Concentration and a skill tree paid for with your XP.

Features

Bows

  • Five bows. The vanilla bow (Primitive), short bow, recurve, longbow and compound bow. Each has its own draw time, power, accuracy and walking speed while drawn.
  • Four tiers. Wooden, iron, diamond and netherite bows hit harder, draw faster and last longer. Upgrade a bow in the crafting table without losing its enchantments.
  • Real archery feel. A full draw hits hardest. Hold it too long and your arm tires and the aim starts to sway. Damage falls off with distance.
  • Sweet spot. Release at full draw while you're still steady and the shot goes off with a heavier thump.

Arrows

  • Fifteen arrow types in three sections.
    • Standard: broadhead, bodkin (goes through armor), precision
    • Elemental: fire, frost (freezes creatures into a block of ice that shatters on the next hit), shock (arcs between nearby creatures), acid, purgewater (douses fire and blazes), plasma (a charge that bursts after a few seconds)
    • Specialty: blast, tearblast (charge it at full draw to knock armor off), adhesive (glues creatures in place), knockdown (staggers and slows), harvest (kills drop extra loot), tripcaster
  • Tripwires. Shoot one tripcaster arrow, then a second, and a wire strings between them. Anything that walks into it snaps the wire and sets off a blast. Press G by one of your wires to take it down and get both arrows back.
  • Arrow recovery. Arrows that land can often be picked back up.

Quiver and ammo wheel

  • Quiver. Nine slots in three rows, one for each arrow section. Carry it anywhere in your inventory.
  • Ammo wheel. Hold R and time slows while a radial wheel shows the arrows you carry. Pick one with the mouse, scroll to cycle within a section, or tap R to switch section.
  • The quiver comes first. With a quiver on you, the wheel and your shots use only the arrows in it.

Crossbows

  • Four kinds in every tier. The hand crossbow is fast and light. The crossbow is the all-rounder. The arbalest is slow and pierces two creatures. The repeater has a five-bolt magazine and two prods that take turns.
  • A hand-pulled reload. Pull the string to the latch, take a bolt from your hip and lay it in. The repeater slams in a new magazine instead.
  • Six bolts. Bolt, piercing, broadhead (bleeding), explosive (no block damage), incendiary and tether (glues and slows). Crossbows fire bolts only.
  • Bolt case. A leather case with a row for each bolt section. Crossbows load from it first.

Attachments

  • Fit parts to compound bows and crossbows. Right-click a part onto the weapon in your inventory, or right-click the weapon with an empty cursor to see both mounts.
  • Optics. Pin sight, red dot, holographic sight and a scope (crossbows only). You aim through the real sight on the weapon, with zoom. Hold Left Alt to aim a loaded crossbow down its sights.
  • Under-mounts. A laser for a steadier aim and tighter shots, a flashlight that lights up what you point it at, and a bayonet for crossbows (+5 attack damage).

Hunting

  • Weak spots. Heads, hearts, cores and eyes take double damage. Legs and arms wear down and break, slowing and weakening the creature. Every creature's spots are fitted to its own model.
  • Hunter's Lens. Carry it and weak spots glow on the creatures you look at, going from green to red as they wear down.
  • Lock-on. Press V to keep your view on a creature while you still aim with the mouse.
  • Concentration. Hold B while drawing for a few seconds of slow motion and a perfectly steady aim. Then it has to recharge.

Skill tree

  • Three branches of eight skills, bought with your XP levels. Press K to open it.
    • Hunter: Steady Hands, Quick Draw, Weak Spot Hunter, Heavy Draw, Double Nock, Executioner, Triple Nock, Butcher
    • Prowler: Deep Focus, Quick Recovery, Slow Time, Hunter's Instinct, Dead Eye, Predator, Dead Eye II, Trophy Hunter
    • Survivor: Scavenger, Light Step, Tough Hide, Resourceful, Running Shot, Second Wind, Iron Hide, Forager
  • Dead Eye. In Concentration, click to mark up to three targets, then loose a volley at all of them.
  • Skills are yours to keep. They stay with you when you die.

Animation and camera

  • A real archer in third person. The bow arm reaches out, the draw arm bends at the elbow and pulls the string back to the jaw, and armor sleeves bend with it.
  • Over-the-shoulder camera while aiming, with arrows landing where the crosshair points. Press O to swap shoulders.
  • Shoot out of a slide. Draw while sliding (sprint + sneak) to hold the slide and slow time.
  • First person. The bow is held to the side. Crossbows come up to your eye.
  • Skeletons draw too. They use the same archer rig and fire special arrows.

Requirements

  • Minecraft 1.20.1, Fabric Loader 0.14.21 or newer
  • Fabric (Fabric Loader 0.14.21 or newer, with Fabric API) or Forge 47 or newer

The mod is needed on both the client and the server. Full Motion, its animation library, is included in the jar, so you don't need to download it separately.

Compatibility

  • Unity Parkour. Made to work together. Both bundle the same Full Motion library.
  • Other mods' arrows go into the quiver. Their sections come from the c:elemental_arrows and c:specialty_arrows tags.
  • Not yet tested alongside other mods that change the player model or first-person hands.

Notes

  • config/bowverhaul.json sets every number in the mod: each bow's and tier's stats, every arrow's damage and effects, tripwires, arrow recovery, weak spot damage, skill costs, skeletons, friendly fire, and the camera, aim sway and HUD options.
  • By default your area effects (shock arcs, blasts, tripwires) don't hurt your own pets, mounts, teammates, villagers or iron golems.
  • Slow motion (ammo wheel, Concentration) slows the whole game in singleplayer only. On a server, Concentration still steadies your aim.
