Description

Deus ex Machina

Deus ex Machina is a difficulty-scaling mod designed to help players overcome the hardest bosses in the game through persistence rather than raw skill alone.

If you are stuck on a difficult boss, this mod ensures that every death makes you stronger for the next attempt.

How It Works

1. The Bottle of Ambrosia

To activate the system, you must drink a Bottle of Ambrosia.

  • Effect: Grants the Deus ex Machina status effect.
  • Persistence: This effect is permanent and stays with you even after death.
  • Removal: You can toggle the effect off by drinking another Bottle of Ambrosia or a bucket of Milk.

2. Adaptation & Vengeance

While the effect is active, the mod tracks your combat performance against configured bosses. If you die to a boss, you respawn with new advantages specific to that entity:

  • Damage Reduction: You take less damage from that boss.
  • Damage Bonus: You deal more damage to that boss.

These bonuses stack with every death. The more you struggle, the stronger you become, eventually guaranteeing victory.

Configuration

Datapack System

Create JSON files in data/<namespace>/deus_mobs/ to configure mob buffs.

Example: data/minecraft/deus_mobs/zombie.json

{
  "target": "minecraft:zombie",
  "resistance": {
    "min": 0,
    "max": 80,
    "increase": 5,
    "reset": "FULL"
  },
  "attack": {
    "min": 0,
    "max": 50,
    "increase": 3,
    "reset": "PARTIAL"
  }
}

Configuration Options

Field Description
target Entity ID (minecraft:zombie) or tag (#minecraft:undead)
type entity_type (default) or instance
min Minimum buff value
max Maximum buff value
increase Amount gained per death
reset Reset behavior when killing the mob

Reset Behaviors

Value Description
NONE Buffs never reset
FULL Reset to minimum on kill
PARTIAL Reduce by increase amount on kill

Tracking Modes

Mode Description
entity_type All mobs of a type share buff progression (default)
instance Each individual mob tracks its own kill history

Instance mode example (Warden):

{
  "target": "minecraft:warden",
  "type": "instance",
  "resistance": { "min": 0, "max": 90, "increase": 3, "reset": "FULL" }
}

With instance mode, dying to Warden A only builds resistance against Warden A. Warden B is tracked separately.

Default Configurations

The mod includes default configurations for:

  • Warden (instance mode)
  • Wither
  • Ender Dragon
