Description
# Better Foliage - Leaves Only
Add a fuller silhouette to tree leaves while keeping the rest of your world unchanged.
This is an **unofficial, leaves-only derivative of [Better Foliage by octarine-noise](https://github.com/octarine-noise/BetterFoliage)**, adapted for Minecraft **1.21.11** with **Fabric**. It is an independent port, not an official release by the original author.
## What it changes
- Adds extra cutout geometry around regular tree-leaf block models.
- Generates leaf sprites from the active leaf textures and preserves their normal tint handling.
- Offers configurable size, density, horizontal/vertical offsets and an option to skip the extra geometry inside fully enclosed leaf clusters.
- Includes an optional snowy appearance when snow or a snow block sits directly above the leaves.
- Provides a settings screen through Mod Menu and Cloth Config. Saving settings reloads resources.
Only blocks implemented as `LeavesBlock` are decorated. The original block model is retained underneath the added detail. Custom models and resource packs may need individual checking.
This edition does **not** include the original mod's grass, reeds, algae, coral, other plant effects, rounded logs, rounded cacti or extra particles. It changes no recipes, collisions, loot or world generation. Falling-leaf particles require a separate mod.
## Requirements
- Minecraft **1.21.11** and **Fabric Loader 0.20.1 or newer**.
- **Fabric API 0.141.6+1.21.11 or a compatible newer build for 1.21.11**.
- **Cloth Config 21.11.153 or a compatible newer build for 1.21.11**.
- Java **21 or newer**. The Voxy Enhanced test setup uses Java 25.
- **Mod Menu** is optional and recommended for the configuration screen.
Install the main JAR and its required dependencies in your client's `mods` folder. Install only one build with the `betterfoliage` mod ID. Do not install this alongside the original Better Foliage or another build of this port.
This is a **client-side visual mod**. A dedicated server does not need it, and other players do not need it merely to connect to the same server.
## Configuration and compatibility
Open **Mods > Better Foliage - Leaves Only > Configure**, or edit `config/BetterFoliage.json` while the game is closed. The file contains the main enable toggle and the `leaves` group. Normal density and hiding internal decoration are enabled by default; the denser option adds more geometry.
The port was checked with **Sodium 0.8.12** and **Iris 1.10.8** in the Voxy Enhanced development setup. Automated checks covered resource reload, GPU atlas upload, generated sprites, full texture UV coverage, leaf mesh conditions, leaf-only configuration and preservation of non-leaf block models. This is not a promise of compatibility with every renderer, shader or resource pack, nor an FPS improvement claim.
**Voxy's distant LOD geometry remains unchanged.** This mod decorates normal nearby leaf-block rendering; it does not add the extra leaf geometry to distant Voxy terrain.
This build is **3.0.0-alpha.3**. The version follows the local port's development history, not an upstream release number. It is intended for testing; keep backups when changing the surrounding mod setup.
