Description
Vanilla Minecraft only tells you "You may not rest now, there are monsters nearby" and leaves you to search for the culprit in the dark. Bed Monster Highlight shows you where it is.
When that message appears after you click a bed, every hostile monster inside the area vanilla checks (8 blocks each way horizontally and 5 vertically around the head of that bed; zombified piglins excepted, see below) gets Minecraft's own glowing outline for 10 seconds. The outline is drawn through blocks, so you can see the zombie behind the wall or the creeper under the floor. The action bar adds their names after the vanilla message, for example "... monsters nearby | Glowing now: Zombie x2, Skeleton".
- Nothing to configure: it works as soon as it is installed
- Client-side only: nothing is sent to the server, and other players do not see the glow
- The glow switches off after 10 seconds
- Requires Fabric Loader 0.19.5+, Fabric API and Java 25, for Minecraft 26.3
- If the server makes a monster glow for real (glowing effect, spectral arrow) while ours is on, the server's glow is left alone
- Checked by an automated client test on 26.3: zombies and an enderman behind a stone-brick wall were outlined after a failed sleep, a zombified piglin and a zombie out of range were not, and the outlines were gone after 10 seconds (screenshots in the gallery)
Multiplayer: the outline shows monster positions through walls. Some servers do not allow client mods that show entities through blocks. Check your server's rules before using it there. It only works after vanilla's own "monsters nearby" message, only for hostile monsters, and never for players.
Known limitations: zombified piglins are not highlighted (they block sleep only while angry at you, which the client cannot see); endermen are, because they always block sleep. The search area follows vanilla's rule for 26.3; a server that changes the rule can differ. Servers with anti-ESP or entity-hiding plugins may not send monsters behind walls to your client, so those cannot glow. Monsters added by other mods are included when they extend the vanilla Monster class; if that mod changes the sleeping rule, results can differ. Not tested on a dedicated server, on Linux or macOS, or with other outline/shader mods.
