Ascension Pets : Pet Leveling and QOL

Level up your tamed companions , unlock stronger stats with Pet Cores, command supported pets, and protect them from owner and teammate damage.

Ascension Pets gives your tamed companions their own progression in Minecraft 1.21.1. Pets earn XP through their contribution to combat, gain stronger stats as they level, and unlock higher level caps through consumable Pet Cores.

Protect your companions from accidental attacks, inspect their progress in a dedicated menu, and choose how supported pets follow, wait, or wander. Pet progression works independently of Ascension Paths and Ascension Parties.

Progress Through 300 Levels

Every pet starts at level 1 with an initial cap of 50. At the cap, hold the correct core and right-click your own pet to unlock the next stage.

Pet level Required item New level cap
50 Pet Core I 100
100 Pet Core II 200
200 Pet Core III 300

Successful upgrades consume one core and surround the pet with turquoise rings and sparks. A core unlocks further progression; it does not grant the levels automatically.

The default progression targets at level 300 are:

  • 20× base maximum health
  • 10× supported outgoing damage
  • 2× movement and supported flight speed
  • 20 additional armor points

Bonuses grow smoothly between progression milestones. Existing levels, XP, and unlocked caps are saved with the pet.

Earn XP Through Your Pet's Own Combat

XP is awarded only after the damaged creature dies, based on the actual health damage contributed by that pet. The default rate is 0.25 XP per HP: dealing 8 HP of damage earns 2 XP when the target dies.

Armor, absorption, and the target's remaining health are accounted for. Your own attacks and other pets' attacks do not count toward this pet's contribution, and a companion standing nearby receives no XP from your kills.

A recorded contribution can still earn its reward if another player lands the final hit or the target later dies from fire. Contributions must be made while the pet is actively accompanying its living, online owner within the configured range. Waiting or wandering pets do not earn new combat contributions. Payment requires the pet to remain alive and loaded, with its owner alive and online.

Recover Between Fights

Pets unlock out-of-combat regeneration as they advance:

  • Level 100: Regeneration I after 10 quiet seconds.
  • Level 200: Regeneration II after 5 quiet seconds.
  • Level 300: Regeneration III after 2 quiet seconds.

Dealing or receiving actual damage resets the recovery delay. An active combat target prevents regeneration.

Protect and Manage Each Companion

Owner damage is blocked by default. With Ascension Parties, damage from the owner's teammates is also protected.

Each pet has separate owner damage and party damage switches. Only its owner can change these permissions. Supported direct attacks, attributed projectiles, and owned-creature attacks use the same protection rules.

Iron’s Spells compatibility: supported player spells, spell areas and summons follow friendly fire and pet damage permissions, including harmful effects and forced movement. Enemy spellcasters can still damage you and your pets; beneficial spells remain available. World fire or lava without an attributed attacker still causes normal environmental damage.

The pet menu opens with a scrollable list. Select a companion to view its level, XP, health, bonuses, core requirements, recovery status, and damage permissions.

Supported pets also provide Sit/Stay, Follow, and Wander commands. Commands respect native restrictions such as riding, leashes, and dragon-specific states. Returning to the list preserves your position.

Vanilla and Modded Companions

Vanilla pets include wolves, cats, parrots, and tamed horses, donkeys, and mules. Other tameable creatures can use progression and protection when their ownership is supported; available movement commands depend on the species.

Dedicated command support includes Lupus Rex from Weapons of Miracles (WOM) and selected dragons from the tested Saint's Dragons NeoForge port. Unknown movement systems display unavailable controls rather than replacing the creature's AI. Custom attacks and movement mechanics vary between mods and may need dedicated compatibility support.

With Ascension Scaling, wild scaling bonuses are removed when a supported creature is tamed. Its wild level is not converted into pet levels; Pets progression remains separate.

Current Core Crafting

  • Pet Core I: six Netherite Blocks and three Nether Stars.
  • Pet Core II: four Apotheosis God-Fused Pearls and four Ascension Paths Dragon Plates around one Pet Core I. This recipe requires Ascension Paths, Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks, and Apotheosis together.
  • Pet Core III: currently has no crafting recipe. It is available through the Creative tab or commands, so the default survival crafting route does not yet cover the final level-300 unlock.

All three cores are included in the Ascension Pets Creative tab. Missing optional recipe dependencies do not prevent the mod itself from loading.

Controls, Configuration, and Requirements

Open the pet menu using /pets or the paw logo in the collapsible Ascension inventory menu. P opens Pets when Parties is absent; with Parties installed, its menu provides access to your pets.

The interface supports English and Turkish. Server configuration controls progression, XP rewards, stat curves, companion range, and owner activity requirements.

  • Minecraft 1.21.1
  • NeoForge 21.1.248+, using a compatible 21.1.x build
  • Java 21
  • Install the mod on both client and server.

Paths, Parties, and Scaling are optional. If Ascension Parties is installed, version 1.8.1 or newer is required. If Ascension Paths is installed, version 1.37.0 or newer is required. Use the current Suite releases together for the shared inventory interface.

Iron’s Spells is optional. If installed, use 1.21.1-3.16.3 or newer. Compatibility was tested with 1.21.1-3.16.3.
