Alex's Butchery (Compat)

A compatibility mod fully integrating Butchery with Alex's Mobs with full support for all mobs.

Alex's Butchery

Bring the creatures of Alex's Mobs into your butcher's workshop.

Alex's Butchery is an add-on for Butchery and Alex's Mobs that gives 82 supported creatures their own carcasses and butchering drops. Take a carcass home, hang it above a blood grate, remove the head, skin or pluck it, and work through the remaining cuts with your cleaver. Keep the meat for cooking, turn the hide into leather, or save a trophy for the wall.

It uses Butchery's existing tools and stations rather than introducing a second set to learn. Small game, birds, giant animals, fish, and stranger creatures have different processing steps and materials, so a lobster is not treated like an elephant.

Requirements

Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge. Install Alex's Butchery alongside these required mods:

Required mod Minimum declared version
Butchery 5.2
Alex's Mobs 1.22.9
Citadel 2.6.0

Use the Forge 1.20.1 versions of the dependencies. On a multiplayer server, install the mod and its required dependencies on both the server and each player's client.

JEI, Jade, Patchouli, Farmer's Delight, Alex's Mobs Delight, and Immersive Tanning are optional. Their integrations are explained below. The separate Butchery: Alex's Mobs Addon is not required either.

Getting Started

For your first carcass, choose a supported adult animal that can be carried, such as a gazelle or kangaroo. Bring a Butchery cleaver and skinning knife, then set up a hook or rope with a blood grate below it.

  1. Make the kill with a suitable weapon. A cleaver works with Butchery's specific-tool rule. A weapon enchanted with Butcher's Touch also qualifies. Baby creatures never produce carcasses.
  2. Collect and hang the carcass. Right-click a Butchery hook or rope while holding the carcass. Ordinary fresh carcasses that need draining must be hung before you can bleed them.
  3. Start the bleeding. Right-click the hanging carcass with your cleaver and wait for it to drain. The blood grate below collects the blood. Butchery's Instant Bleeding setting can skip the wait.
  4. Take the head. Once the carcass is drained, use the cleaver again if the creature has a head-removal step. Keep the head for taxidermy or other supported uses.
  5. Remove the skin or feathers. Use the skinning knife on creatures with a skinning or plucking step. Animals without either step move straight to the cuts.
  6. Finish with the cleaver. Work through three cutting stages to collect the creature's remaining materials. These can include meat, fat, bones, organs, and species-specific parts. The carcass disappears after the final cut.

Processing uses right-clicks with the appropriate tool. The cutting and skinning steps wear down your tools, so bring enough durability for larger hunting trips.

Once an ordinary carcass has been drained, you can continue butchering it while it hangs or take it down and finish on the ground. Bloodless creatures and the largest animals follow the exceptions below.

Different Creatures, Different Jobs

Hanging Carcasses

Most carryable creatures that need bleeding use the familiar hook-and-grate setup. Their blood yield depends on their size category:

Carcass category Blood from normal draining
Small 250 mB
Regular 1,000 mB
Giant, processed on the ground 2,000 mB

Put a blood grate beneath the carcass to collect the blood. Without a suitable grate, blood puddles follow Butchery's own settings.

Giants Stay Where They Fall

Elephants, orcas, cachalot whales, Laviathans, sea bears, giant squid, Warped Moscos, and the Void Worm leave carcasses in the world instead of dropping an item you can carry home. Bleed and butcher these carcasses in place. A blood grate underneath can still collect their blood.

The Void Worm requires a netherite cleaver for the killing blow, following Butchery's boss-tool requirement. An ordinary cleaver or Butcher's Touch alone does not bypass that requirement.

Birds Are Plucked

Birds are hung and drained, but the skinning knife removes feathers instead of a hide. Emus and roadrunners can also yield their own Alex's Mobs feathers during plucking. The remaining cuts provide whatever meat, feet, bones, or other materials are assigned to that bird.

Some Creatures Skip Bleeding

Fish, many insects and crustaceans, and several skeletal, slime, or fungal creatures are processed without a draining stage. Use a cleaver to begin their available steps, either on the ground or on a hook.

Not every creature in one broad category behaves identically. Crimson Mosquitoes and Warped Moscos, for example, do have a bleeding stage. Follow the particular carcass's tool hints rather than assuming every insect works the same way.

Meat, Materials, and Useful Drops

Butchering is not just a different way to collect ordinary meat. Each supported creature has its own set of processing drops, using existing Butchery and Alex's Mobs items where appropriate and adding new ones where needed.

New Foods

The mod adds 23 raw-and-cooked food pairs:

Wild game and land animals: venison, game bird, big cat meat, bear meat, primate meat, reptile meat, bushmeat, elephant meat, rhinoceros meat, and emu meat.

Seafood and marine animals: whale meat, seal meat, shark meat, and mantis shrimp tail.

Unusual creatures: Cosmaw meat, Endergrade meat, Laviathan meat, Straddler meat, Froststalker meat, Tusklin meat, Warped Toad leg, Bunfungus meat, and Void Worm flesh.

Cook these foods in a furnace, smoker, or campfire. Their cooked versions restore more hunger than the raw versions.

Other carcasses yield familiar foods from the required mods. Kangaroos provide Alex's Mobs kangaroo meat, moose provide moose ribs, and bison supply several of Butchery's steak cuts rather than a separate new bison meat item.

More Than Meat

Depending on the creature and stage, you can recover hides, pelts, feathers, animal fat, bones, meat scraps, tentacles, ink, poison sacs, and Butchery organs. Recognizable Alex's Mobs materials are also worked into the process, including horns, antlers, scutes, teeth, claws, wings, and other creature parts.

There are also new elephant tusks, rhinoceros horns, Tusklin tusks, snapping turtle shells, and terrapin shells. These are additional materials, not a promise that every part has its own equipment recipe.

Drops can have variable quantities or chances. Butchery's organ setting controls organ drops, and its Looting setting determines whether Looting on your processing tool grants additional loot rolls.

What Happens to Normal Death Drops?

By default, a qualifying carcass kill removes the meat, hides, and other designated parts that are recovered through butchering, rather than giving you those materials immediately as well as a carcass. Drops outside that replacement list are left alone.

This replacement only applies when the kill actually produces a carcass. It can also be changed in the mod's settings.

Turn Skins Into Leather

Alex's Butchery adds 32 kinds of skins, hides, and pelts, from tiger and snow leopard pelts to crocodile skin, whale hide, and the hides of more unusual creatures.

Use Butchery's Skin Rack to cure the new skins. Hang a skin on the empty rack, apply salt, then wet it with Butchery's sponge. The sponge must already contain water; wet it in a cauldron before using it on the salted skin.

After wetting, the skin cures for about 90 seconds while the rack is ticking. Right-click the finished rack to collect one leather and leave the rack ready for another skin.

The order matters: hang the skin, salt it, then use the wet sponge. Minecraft's ordinary sponge block is not a substitute for Butchery's sponge item.

Before curing begins, sneaking and right-clicking with an empty hand lets you take the skin back. Save any pelts you need for rugs before turning them into leather.

With Immersive Tanning installed, the new skins can also enter that mod's hide-processing system as small, medium, or large raw hides.

Heads, Trophies, Rugs, and Skeletons

Mounted Heads

Creatures with a head-removal step can provide a head for Butchery's Taxidermy Table. Combine the head with wheat and an empty head mount of the appropriate size to create a wall trophy.

Mount sizes follow the creature. Small creatures use small mounts, while animals such as rhinoceroses, moose, and bison use large ones. Check the individual taxidermy recipe instead of assuming one mount fits every head.

Unwanted heads can also be broken down with Butchery's hammer. Not every supported creature has a separate head or mounted trophy.

Pelt Rugs

Make a grizzly bear, tiger, snow leopard, or bison rug using three matching pelts or hides and that creature's head.

The crafting layout puts the head between two pelts, with the third pelt directly beneath it. These are floor decorations that include the animal's head, and they dampen vibrations like carpet.

Skeleton Displays

Use a Bottle of Sulfuric Acid from Butchery on an eligible whole carcass to turn it into a skeleton display. After about 11 seconds, the skeleton replaces the carcass in the same position.

The carcass can be fresh or drained, hanging or on the ground, but it must still be whole and must not currently be bleeding. Choose this route before removing the head or making other cuts. It converts the carcass into a skeleton instead of taking it through the remaining meat and skin stages.

Only creatures with a supported skeleton form can be converted. Not every carcass qualifies, including several boneless or unusual creatures. Skeleton blocks can also be displayed on hooks.

Carcasses That Still Look Like the Creature

Carcasses use Alex's Mobs models instead of replacing everything with the same generic body. Supported appearance details are carried over, including terrapin shell colors and patterns and catfish size differences.

Hanging and ground carcasses have different poses. Skinning and cutting change what remains visible, with separate tissue surfaces and fitted skeletal shapes for the appropriate stages. Multipart creatures retain their segmented bodies, while heads, mounted trophies, and rugs use the corresponding creature's appearance.

In-Game Help and Optional Integrations

JEI

A dedicated Butchering category shows processing steps, the tool used for each step, and the materials that can come from them. It is useful when you find an unfamiliar carcass or need a particular creature part.

Treat the displayed outputs as possible yields, not a guarantee that every random drop will appear on every cut. Individual drop chances, quantity rolls, and settings still matter.

Jade

Looking at a carcass shows its stage and the next tool to use, along with bleeding or acid progress when applicable. Jade also shows the skin rack's state, making it easier to tell whether it needs salt, water, or time to finish curing.

Patchouli

Butchery's guide gains an Alex's Mobs category with pages covering carcasses, hanging, giant creatures, birds, bloodless creatures, skins, trophies, skeletons, rugs, and meats.

Advancements

The mod adds seven advancements beneath Butchery's advancement tree and connects the relevant new interactions to Butchery's existing progression. These are part of the mod itself and do not require Patchouli.

Farmer's Delight

Selected new raw meats can be prepared on Farmer's Delight's cutting board with a knife, turning them into ingredients its recipes already use.

Most supported mammal and fantasy meats become minced beef. Game bird, emu, and reptile meat become chicken cuts; Tusklin meat becomes bacon; shark meat becomes cod slices. Whale, elephant, rhinoceros, and Laviathan meat give three minced beef per cutting recipe, while the other supported conversions give two pieces.

This is support for specific meats, not a blanket conversion for every new food.

Alex's Mobs Delight

When matching items from Alex's Mobs Delight are available, carcass drops use those items instead of introducing another equivalent version. The supported substitutions cover bear, emu, Froststalker, Tusklin, seal, whale, and Bunfungus foods, plus terrapin and snapping turtle shells.

The corresponding duplicate items from Alex's Butchery are hidden from its creative listings. Substitution is limited to the supported matches rather than every item the other mod adds.

Immersive Tanning

The new hides and pelts have recipes that let Immersive Tanning recognize them as appropriately sized raw hides for its rack. This gives you another route into leatherworking without making Immersive Tanning mandatory.

The Official Butchery Add-On

Alex's Butchery is a separate project from Butchery: Alex's Mobs Addon. When that add-on is installed, the default compatibility setting leaves these creatures to it: Bald Eagle, Blobfish, Caiman, Capuchin Monkey, Crow, and Emu.

That overlap list is configurable. It is a defined list, not automatic detection of every creature a future version of the other add-on might support.

Supported Creatures

The current roster contains 82 creatures. Their available heads, skins, organs, and skeletons vary by creature.

Land mammals: Anteater, Bison, Capuchin Monkey, Elephant, Gazelle, Gelada Monkey, Gorilla, Grizzly Bear, Jerboa, Kangaroo, Maned Wolf, Moose, Platypus, Raccoon, Rhinoceros, Skunk, Snow Leopard, Sugar Glider, Tasmanian Devil, and Tiger.

Reptiles and amphibians: Alligator Snapping Turtle, Anaconda, Caiman, Crocodile, Komodo Dragon, Rain Frog, Rattlesnake, and Terrapin.

Birds: Bald Eagle, Blue Jay, Crow, Emu, Hummingbird, Potoo, Roadrunner, Seagull, Shoebill, and Toucan.

Aquatic wildlife: Blobfish, Cachalot Whale, Catfish, Devil's Hole Pupfish, Flying Fish, Frilled Shark, Giant Squid, Hammerhead Shark, Lobster, Mantis Shrimp, Mimic Octopus, Mudskipper, Orca, Seal, and Triops.

Insects and other invertebrates: Banana Slug, Cave Centipede, Cockroach, Crimson Mosquito, Fly, Leafcutter Ant, Tarantula Hawk, and Warped Mosco.

Other unusual creatures: Bone Serpent, Bunfungus, Cosmic Cod, Cosmaw, Dropbear, Endergrade, Farseer, Froststalker, Laviathan, Mimicube, Mungus, Murmur, Sea Bear, Skelewag, Skreecher, Soul Vulture, Straddler, Stradpole, Tusklin, Void Worm, and Warped Toad.

Not supported for butchering: Comb Jelly, Enderiophage, Guster, Rocky Roller, Spectre, Sunbird, and Underminer. These creatures are deliberately excluded from the carcass roster.

Server settings and the official add-on compatibility option can reduce the creatures handled by Alex's Butchery in a particular world.

Settings for Players and Modpacks

Alex's Butchery follows Butchery's existing settings for specific-tool kills, Instant Bleeding, organ drops, and Looting. You do not need to configure a second copy of those rules for the new creatures.

Its own gameplay settings provide the following controls:

Setting Default behavior
Disabled creatures No creatures are disabled through this list. Add individual mob names to prevent their carcass drops.
Tamed creatures Eligible tamed creatures can produce carcasses. This can be disabled.
Replace normal drops Designated materials are moved from the initial death drops into the butchering process.
Defer to the official add-on Enabled when the other add-on is installed, using the configurable six-creature overlap list.

Client settings let you adjust the carcass, head, and trophy render distance, which defaults to 96 blocks and can be set from 16 to 256 blocks. Ground-carcass tool hints can also be toggled, and are enabled by default.

For more detailed modpack changes, processing drops use loot tables, and item tags control supported tool categories and the items replaced by carcasses.

Common Questions

Why did a creature not leave a carcass?

Check that it is a supported adult and that the kill meets Butchery's weapon rule. Baby creatures never qualify, and deaths without an attributed killer do not produce these carcasses. Also check for a disabled creature, a tamed-creature restriction, or the official add-on handling that species instead. The Void Worm has its additional netherite-cleaver requirement.

Why will my cleaver not do anything to this carcass?

A fresh, carryable carcass that needs bleeding must be hung first. A bleeding carcass needs to finish draining before cutting can continue. After the head-removal step, some creatures need the skinning knife before the cleaver can be used again. Jade's next-tool hint is especially helpful here.

Why is the skin rack not making leather?

Make sure you applied salt before using a wet Butchery sponge. A dry sponge or Minecraft sponge block will not start curing. Once the skin is wet, allow about 90 seconds of ticking time, then right-click to collect the leather.

Why will acid not work?

The creature must have a supported skeleton form. Its carcass must still be whole, and it cannot already be bleeding or dissolving. A carcass that has already had its head removed or been cut is too far along for this route.

Do I need all of the optional mods?

No. Butchery, Alex's Mobs, and Citadel are the required mods. The optional mods add recipe displays, on-screen guidance, book pages, food conversions, item substitutions, or another leatherworking route.
