Random Mob per Block Placement

Every block you place summons a random mob. One of 83 Minecraft 1.21.4 mobs is selected with equal probability, including bosses such as the Wither, Ender Dragon, and Warden. Mobs spawn directly above the placed block. Supports multiplayer. Korean

Random Mob per Block Placement — Java 1.21.4

Installation

Place the ZIP file directly into your world's datapacks folder without extracting it, then run /reload.

This datapack is separate from the Thief Villager datapack. If you do not need the thief feature, stop or remove that datapack.

Rules

  • Every time a player successfully places a block, exactly one mob is summoned.

  • The chance is 100%, with no cooldown.

  • One of 83 mob types from Minecraft Java 1.21.4 is selected with equal probability (1/83, approximately 1.20% each).

  • The pool includes the Wither, Ender Dragon, Warden, Elder Guardian, Creaking, Giant, Illusioner, and Zombie Horse.

  • Immediately after placement, the datapack locates the placed block using the player's line of sight and summons the mob directly above the center of that block.

  • The placed block remains unchanged.

  • Dragons, Ghasts, and Phantoms use the same spawn position and are not moved to random nearby locations or into the air.

  • Small blocks such as slabs use the top of the block space as the spawn reference.

  • The line-of-sight check works up to 16 blocks away. Special clients that allow placement outside normal sight may produce different results.

  • Only in rare situations where no targeted block can be detected will the mob be summoned above the player instead.

  • The summoned mob's name is displayed in the action bar.

  • In multiplayer, each player's block placements are handled independently.

  • Variants such as block color, mob color, or baby/adult forms are not treated as separate entries.

  • Non-mob entities such as boats, armor stands, dropped items, and arrows are excluded.

Commands

/function blockmobs:stop
Stops new mob summons.

/function blockmobs:start
Restarts mob summoning.

/function blockmobs:test
Immediately summons one random mob, even while the datapack is stopped.

Behavior

  • Detects real block placements in Survival and Creative mode.

  • Does not react to failed placements, opening containers, opening doors, or blocks placed using commands such as /setblock.

  • Water bucket placement and entity placement are treated differently from normal block placement.

  • To keep hostile mobs active, use Easy difficulty or higher.

  • On Peaceful difficulty, hostile mobs may immediately disappear.

  • Fish may die outside water, and Nether mob dimension-conversion behavior follows vanilla Minecraft mechanics.

  • Boss mobs use the same probability as all other mobs.

  • Because the Wither and Ender Dragon can destroy terrain, using a dedicated challenge world is recommended.

  • Mobs created by explosions, slime splitting, or other vanilla mob behaviors are not counted as additional placement summons.

Verification

Tested on an official Minecraft Java 1.21.4 local server.

Verified:

  • Continuous real-player block placement

  • Exactly one mob summoned per successful placement

  • Stop and restart commands

  • Exclusion of command-placed blocks

  • Successful summoning of all 83 mob types

Additional testing confirmed that the mob spawn position correctly matches the center above the newly placed block when:

  • Placing blocks in front of the player

  • Attaching blocks to wall sides

  • Building vertical pillars beneath the player
