What's new

Fully procedural tree generation

Main changes

  • Trees are no longer generated from .mcstructure structures. Every tree is procedural, both in world generation and when grown with bone meal.
  • Each tree has two variants with the same shape: one with every leaf using the horizontal model and one with every leaf using the vertical model. Each tree picks one at 50/50, so forests mix both models and look less repetitive.
  • Added feature_rules/grass_generation.json (grass:grass_generation), which places the minecraft:scatter_tall_grass_feature using the after_surface_pass placement pass. Grass generation runs for 12 iterations, with uniform X/Z coordinates in the [0, 16] range.

New or converted trees

  • Spruce with vines: used to be structures only. It is now the procedural spruce with vines on the trunk.
  • Mega spruce (2×2): used to be structures only. It is now procedural, with a 2×2 trunk, a 13–18 block conical canopy and podzol ground, as in vanilla.
  • Jungle and mega jungle: structures removed. The procedural tree now has both variants. On the mega jungle tree, branches and canopy now share the same model within each tree.
  • Swamp: structures removed. Only the procedural oak tree with vines remains, as in vanilla.
  • Oak, birch and spruce: structures removed. Only the two procedural variants remain.
  • All other species (acacia, azalea, tall birch, cherry, dark oak, jungle bush, undecorated jungle): these used to have a single fixed model, or a mix within the same tree. They now have both variants at 50/50.
  • Azalea: keeps its rattling leaf.

Bone meal (saplings)

  • Oak: 90% regular oak and 10% fancy oak, as in vanilla.
  • Birch: grows using the same two procedural variants.
  • Jungle: grows using the same two procedural variants.
  • Spruce: grows using the same two procedural variants.
  • Spruce in a 2×2: now grows a procedural mega spruce.

Leaf decay

  • Spruce leaves now look for a trunk up to 5 blocks away (previously 4), so the canopies of mega spruces and mega pines are covered.
  • Structure-based trees already in worlds generated before this version, swamp trees included, remain unchanged.

Compatibility

  • Existing worlds keep their existing trees. New chunks generate with the procedural trees.
