Removable visual item labels for faster Minecraft Bedrock storage

Andy's Better Shulker Boxes adds clear, removable item labels to placed shulker boxes. Hold the item you want to use as a label, sneak, and interact with the shulker box. One item is placed into the label and its familiar vanilla icon appears flat on the box's upward-facing surface, making ores, food, redstone, tools, building blocks, and other supplies recognizable without opening every container.

The add-on is especially useful in large storage rooms, workshops, mobile bases, multiplayer warehouses, and color-coded sorting systems. A label can be replaced or removed at any time, and the stored label item is safely returned when the label is changed, removed, or the shulker box is broken. This creates an item-frame-like organization system without requiring a separate frame around every icon.

Important Current Placement Limitation

In this release, labels can only be displayed on the surface that faces upward in the game world. Upright shulker boxes work as intended, but if a shulker box is placed against a wall or hangs from a ceiling, the label does not yet rotate onto the box's actual lid face. For the clearest results, place the shulker box upright with the surface you want to label facing the sky.

An update is planned to let labels follow the shulker box's actual oriented lid face. Until that update is ready and reliable on every direction, this release deliberately uses the proven upward-facing placement.

The add-on contains a large generated catalog of current vanilla Bedrock item icons, but every item in the game has not been manually tested as a label. If an item appears blank, uses the wrong icon, or falls back to paper, please leave a CurseForge comment with the item name, Minecraft version, device, and add-on version so it can be corrected.

Installation Guide

Windows, Android, iPhone, and iPad

1. Download Andys_Better_Shulker_Boxes_1.0.12.mcaddon from this official CurseForge project.
2. Open the downloaded .mcaddon file with Minecraft Bedrock.
3. Wait for Minecraft to confirm that both included packs imported successfully.
4. Create a world, or edit the world where you want to use the add-on.
5. Open Behavior Packs → My Packs.
6. Select Andy's Better Shulker Boxes BP and choose Activate.
7. Confirm that Andy's Better Shulker Boxes RP is also active under Resource Packs. Minecraft should activate the linked Resource Pack automatically, but it is worth checking before entering the world.
8. Enter the world and place an upright shulker box to begin labeling.

Minecraft Bedrock 1.21.120 or newer is required. Cheats, commands, and experimental gameplay toggles are not required.

Back up an important world before installing or updating any add-on.

Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch

Consoles generally cannot import arbitrary local .mcaddon files directly. Import and activate the add-on on Windows or mobile, upload the prepared world to a Realm, and join that Realm from the console. Realm members receive the world's required packs through Minecraft's normal world-pack delivery.

Updating the Add-On

1. Back up the world.
2. Close the world completely.
3. Import the newer .mcaddon file.
4. Edit the world and verify that both included packs show the same newest version.
5. Remove obsolete active copies if Minecraft retained them.
6. Reopen the world and check one existing label before continuing normal play.

Comprehensive Usage Guide

1. Prepare the Shulker Box

1. Obtain any normal or dyed shulker box.
2. Place it upright in the storage location where you want to use it.
3. Make sure the surface you want labeled faces upward toward the sky. The current release does not rotate labels onto wall-facing or downward-facing lid surfaces.
4. Fill and organize the shulker normally. The label does not change its storage slots or vanilla opening behavior.

2. Choose a Label Item

1. Choose an item that clearly represents the shulker's contents.
2. Place at least one of that item in your hotbar.
3. Select the item so it is visible in your hand.

Useful label choices include a Diamond for valuables, Redstone Dust for components, a Log for wood, Cooked Chicken for food, an Ender Pearl for End supplies, or a Potion for brewing materials.

3. Apply the Label

1. Hold the chosen label item.
2. Sneak or crouch.
3. Aim directly at the placed shulker box.
4. Use or interact with the shulker while continuing to sneak.
5. One item is removed from the held stack and stored safely in the label.
6. A green Shulker label applied message appears.
7. The item's flat icon appears centered on the shulker box's upward-facing surface.

Sneak-use prevents the normal shulker inventory from opening during the label action. Interact without sneaking whenever you want to open and use the shulker normally.

4. Replace an Existing Label

1. Select the new label item in your hotbar.
2. Sneak and interact with the already labeled shulker box.
3. The previous label item is returned to your inventory first.
4. One item from the new held stack becomes the replacement label.
5. The visible icon updates to the new item.

If your inventory cannot accept the returned item, Minecraft places the leftover safely near the player instead of deleting it.

5. Remove a Label

1. Select an empty hotbar slot so your hand is empty.
2. Sneak or crouch.
3. Interact with the labeled shulker box.
4. The icon disappears.
5. A yellow Shulker label removed message appears.
6. The original label item returns to your inventory, or drops safely nearby if the inventory is full.

You can also sneak-interact directly with the visible lid icon using an empty hand.

6. Move or Break a Labeled Shulker

Break the shulker box normally. The add-on removes its visual label and returns the stored label item to the player. The label does not remain floating at the old block position.

Place the shulker again and apply a new label after deciding its final location. The label is associated with the placed block position, not stored inside the portable shulker-box item.

7. Build an Efficient Storage System

• Match label items to the most important contents rather than the shulker's color alone.
• Use shulker colors for broad groups and item labels for exact contents.
• Keep frequently accessed shulkers upright and visible from common walking paths.
• Leave enough light and viewing space above dense storage rows.
• Use repeated visual rules, such as blue boxes for minerals, red boxes for redstone, and green boxes for farming supplies.
• In shared worlds, agree on a consistent label system so every player can find supplies quickly.

Compatibility and Technical Notes

Bedrock does not expose a stable arbitrary ItemStack renderer to custom add-on entities. Andy's Better Shulker Boxes therefore maps vanilla item IDs to their normal Mojang texture paths and renders those familiar icons on a thin label surface. Items from other add-ons use the paper fallback until their texture path is added. Enchantment glint and item durability-state visuals are not reproduced on the flat label.

The add-on does not alter the inventory, chest, or hotbar icon of a portable shulker box. Labels are visible only on shulker boxes placed in the world.

Achievement-Friendly Design

Andy's Better Shulker Boxes is designed to work without Cheats, Beta APIs, or experimental world toggles. It uses stable Bedrock Script APIs and the included linked Resource Pack.

Minecraft makes the final achievement-eligibility decision for every world. A world that previously enabled Creative mode, Cheats, Experiments, or an ineligible template may already have achievements disabled; removing an add-on cannot reverse that history.

Troubleshooting

The label says it was applied, but I cannot see it

• Confirm that the shulker box is upright and look at its upward-facing world surface.
• Confirm that Andy's Better Shulker Boxes RP is active.
• Confirm that the Behavior Pack and Resource Pack show the same version.
• Completely leave and reopen the world after changing active packs.
• Remove older development copies under Minecraft Settings → Storage if Minecraft retained them.
• Temporarily disable other resource packs that change shulker boxes or custom entity rendering.

The wrong item icon appears, or the label looks like paper

• Confirm that the item is a vanilla Minecraft item rather than an item supplied by another add-on.
• Reapply the label once after confirming both packs are current.
• Leave a CurseForge comment with the exact item name, Minecraft version, device, add-on version, and a screenshot if possible.

Sneak-interacting does not apply a label

• Hold a real item in the selected hotbar slot.
• Continue sneaking while interacting directly with the shulker box.
• Confirm that Andy's Better Shulker Boxes BP is active.
• Test with a common item such as a Diamond, Apple, Compass, or Redstone Dust.

I cannot remove the label

• Select an empty hotbar slot.
• Sneak and interact with the shulker box or directly with the visible label icon.
• Make room in your inventory; a returned item that cannot fit should appear safely nearby.

Vibrant Visuals looks wrong

• Confirm that the current matching Resource Pack is active.
• Remove older pack copies and restart Minecraft.
• Test once with other PBR or shulker-changing Resource Packs disabled.
• Include the first shulkerlabels Content Log error when reporting a problem.
