Changelog
1.1.0 — Landline phones
Phones used to be something you carried. Now a phone can also be something you build: hang one on a wall, give it a name, and that name is who it is.
Two new handsets on the wall
- Landline Phone — an iron-and-gold wall phone. 8 iron bars, 4 gold bars and 2 blue crystals at a workbench.
- Arcane Phone — the same thing in brass and bells, for servers that would rather not have iron plating on the wall. 8 gold bars and 4 blue crystals.
Both mount on a wall and can face any of the four directions, and both have their own model in your hand, so carrying one around looks like carrying a phone rather than a block.
Name it, and the name is the phone
Right-click a landline you have placed and the first thing it asks is what to call it. Up to 24 characters — Spawn Tavern, Ironworks, Front Desk.
That name is the whole point. When you call someone from that phone, they see the name on their screen even though they have never had the number saved. A landline you have not named yet shows its number instead, so a call from it never arrives blank.
Landline numbers start with a 9; mobile numbers still start with a 6, so you can tell them apart at a glance.
Only whoever set the phone up can rename it. And a landline name is always drawn with a device mark, in a different colour from the people in your address book — a phone calling itself "Official Bank" cannot pass itself off as a contact of yours.
What a landline does, and what it does not
It calls and it receives. That is on purpose: no messages, no HySocial, no settings — that is what the mobile is for, and you can take that one with you.
Pick it up and you get four screens: who this phone is with a keypad, your contacts, your call history, and the call itself. The contacts and the history are yours — you walk up to the phone, but you are still you.
The voice is yours too. The phone lends its name to the call, not its voice, so calls from a landline sound and work exactly like calls from a mobile.
A phone that rings in the world
Call a landline from another landline and it rings out loud where it hangs — anyone in that world hears it and whoever gets there first picks it up. A shop phone, a tavern phone, a phone at spawn that someone actually answers.
For now, ringing a landline is something you do from another landline. Calling out from one reaches any mobile normally.
Small print
- Incognito works here as well: toggle it on the idle screen before you dial. On a hidden call the device name is not shown either — hidden means hidden.
- A landline nobody has ever used is not registered at all. Hang one up purely as decoration and it stays decoration.
- Placed phones survive restarts, along with their names and their numbers.
1.0.0 — First release
Phones are here. Craft one, open it, and you have your own number, your own address book and your own inbox.
Pick your handset
- Smartphone — the full experience: a proper home screen, eight apps, a dock, 12 wallpapers and 6 colour themes.
- Basic phone — a classic keypad handset with a green screen. Messages, groups, contacts and calls, nothing else. Much cheaper to craft, and honestly kind of charming.
Both use the same line. Your number, your contacts and your conversations stay the same no matter which one you are carrying, so you can keep the cheap one as a spare.
Talk to people
- Text anyone in your contacts, and get a little notification in the corner of the screen when someone texts you back — no need to keep the phone open.
- Group chats for up to 8 people. Give them a name, invite whoever you want, and make them from either handset.
- Voice calls. Real voice, and you hear each other clearly no matter how far apart you are.
- Call history so you can see who called, who you called and who you missed.
Running a group
Whoever creates a group is in charge of it. You can rename it, remove people, promote someone else to admin, or shut the whole thing down. Admins can invite and remove members. Nobody can kick the creator.
If the creator ever leaves, the longest-serving admin takes over — a group never ends up with nobody in charge.
HySocial
A social feed built into the phone. Post, like, comment and repost. If you would rather not put your name on something, post it anonymously.
You can always delete your own posts. Admins can delete anyone's.
Six colour themes for the post cards, so it looks how you want it to look.
Getting someone's number
You cannot text or call someone who is not in your contacts. Numbers are something you get given, not something you guess. There are three ways to add one:
- Type it in if someone told you their number.
- Scan for people nearby and add whoever is standing next to you.
- Look them up in the public directory, if they have chosen to be listed.
Your contacts are sorted A to Z with the letter down the side, so a long list is still easy to read. You can mark favourites, block people, and turn on do not disturb when you want to be left alone.
Going incognito
Sometimes you want to say something without your name attached. Incognito mode hides who you are on calls and texts — the other person just sees a hidden number.
Leave it switched on permanently, or turn it on for a single call. And if you would rather not deal with anonymous strangers at all, you can set your phone to reject anything that comes in hidden.
Be sensible with it: server staff can still see who sent what, so it is for privacy, not for harassing people.
Two looks: modern and arcane
Running a medieval server? An aluminium smartphone does not belong there. Two admin commands re-skin both handsets:
/movil magia— a slab of carved stone with a bronze edge and the turquoise glow of a portal around the screen. The basic handset becomes a wooden tablet with iron bands and runes burned into the keys./movil moderno— back to the usual look.
It changes the shell and nothing else: same screens, same apps, same everything. It applies to everyone at once, live, without anyone closing their phone, and it survives a restart. The inventory icon keeps the modern look — that one is a fixed asset in the resource pack.
Support the creator
The last row in Settings opens a support link. Tapping it drops a clickable link in your chat; Hytale then asks you to confirm before opening your browser. The mod is free and always will be — that button is the only thing asked in return, and it is checked at startup, so please leave it alone.
Making it yours
- 12 wallpapers, from near-black to bright.
- 6 colour themes for HySocial.
- Four languages: Spanish, English, Portuguese and German. Pick yours in Settings → Language. It is your phone's setting, not the server's, so everyone can read their own in their own language — and it follows you from one handset to the other.
- Change your display name.
- Turn message and ringtone sounds on or off.
- Choose whether you appear in the public directory.
Good to know
- Phones are crafted at a workbench. The basic one takes 4 iron bars and 2 copper; the smartphone takes 12 iron bars, 6 gold and 4 blue crystals.
- Right-click with a phone in hand to open it, or type
/movil abrir. - Forgot your own number?
/movil numero. - If you are carrying both handsets, the smartphone is the one that opens.
- The menus come in Spanish, English, Portuguese and German. The phone starts in Spanish; change it in Settings → Language.
