Daguz Selective Breeding (DSB)
Breed better animals, generation by generation.
Daguz Selective Breeding introduces animal breeding and genetics to Hytale, allowing players to develop their own breeding lines through selective breeding, inherited traits, and natural mutations.
Use the Breeder's Spyglass to inspect animals, compare their genetics, and choose which animals are allowed to reproduce. Watch each new generation grow from Baby to Juvenile and finally Adult, ready to continue the breeding line.
The mod supports both wildlife breeding and livestock farming, giving you the freedom to improve wild populations or develop your own carefully selected herds.
Requires Daguz Core.
Getting Started
Craft the Breeder's Spyglass at a Farmer's Workbench (Tier 1).
Crafting materials:
-
4 Copper Bars
-
2 Green Crystal Shards
-
1 Light Leather
-
1 Greater Essence of Life
The Spyglass is your main tool for examining animals, tracking individuals, and managing their breeding status.
Using the Breeder's Spyglass
Step 1 – Inspect an Animal
Equip the Breeder's Spyglass and right-click to zoom in. Aim at an animal to view its information, including gender, growth stage, and genetic traits.
Step 2 – Track Your Target
While looking through the Spyglass, left-click an animal to select it as your tracked target.
Step 3 – Select a Breeder
Press F (Use) to mark the tracked animal as a breeder.
The Spyglass confirms your selection with the message BREEDER SELECTED.
Press F again to remove its breeder status.
Baby and Juvenile animals can also be marked as breeders, but they will not reproduce until they reach adulthood.
Step 4 – Choose a Partner
Inspect another animal and select a compatible breeding partner.
Step 5 – Let Nature Take Its Course
When compatible breeders are close enough and ready to reproduce, the male will seek out the female.
Breeding happens automatically, producing offspring that inherit genetic traits from both parents.
Breeding Requirements
For successful breeding:
-
Both animals must be Adult and awake.
-
Both must belong to the same species.
-
One must be male and the other female.
-
Both must be marked as breeders.
-
Both must be wild or both must be tamed.
-
The female must have completed her breeding cooldown.
Wild and tamed animals cannot breed with each other.
The system also recognizes species with separate male and female variants, such as Deer Stag/Deer Doe and Moose Bull/Moose Cow.
Genetics and Mutations
Every offspring inherits genetic traits from its parents, allowing players to improve breeding lines over successive generations.
Genetic inheritance also introduces a chance of mutation:
-
51% – No mutation
-
28% – Small mutation (+0.10)
-
14% – Medium mutation (+0.20)
-
7% – Large mutation (+0.30)
Mutations create genetic variation and opportunities to develop increasingly desirable breeding lines.
Genetic values can currently be inspected and inherited. Direct effects on an animal's movement, combat performance, and other gameplay statistics are planned for future development.
Growth and Breeding Cooldown
Every newborn animal progresses through three growth stages:
-
Baby: 1 Hytale day
-
Juvenile: 1 Hytale day
-
Adult: Fully grown and able to reproduce
Female animals have a 2-Hytale-day breeding cooldown after mating.
Once offspring become adults, they can be evaluated and selected as the next generation of breeders.
Build Your Own Breeding Lines
Selective breeding is about making choices over time.
Compare genetic traits, select promising parents, and follow the development of their offspring through multiple generations.
You can maintain a carefully controlled livestock herd or mark wild animals as breeders and allow them to reproduce naturally in their environment.
Your breeding selections can be changed at any time using the Spyglass.
Each generation brings new possibilities, and the direction of your breeding program is entirely up to you.
Final Words
Daguz Selective Breeding is my very first Hytale mod, and I'm looking forward to developing it further.
It is part of the growing Daguz mod series, alongside Daguz Butcher Tool, which adds additional tools for livestock and herd management.
I'm always open to feedback, suggestions, and ideas for improvements or changes. If you have any thoughts on how to make the mod better, please feel free to share them.
Thank you for trying Daguz Selective Breeding!
