What's new

0.3.4 Beta — Clearer quest status and smarter travel choices

  • Add a persistent current-zone card. Separate all quests in the zone's log category from quests within the selected level filter, new suitable quests and confirmed turn-ins at your location.
  • Keep ready turn-ins outside the quest level window. Preserve scanned quest coverage for turn-in destinations outside the usual zone bracket.
  • Separate existing work, new quest areas, individual remaining quests and long-journey alternatives with clearer category bands.
  • Require at least three new suitable quests for a nearby next-area recommendation. Prioritize nearby work and individual quests before distant options; when no nearby area has three new quests, reserve one slot for a distant alternative with new quests, if available.
  • Allow limited early-zone suggestions only when eligible Questie quests support them, with a zone-level warning. Your quest-level setting remains in effect.
  • Preserve current-zone status during background scans and update turn-in counts from destination data rather than quest-log category.
  • Make the panel more compact with content-sized cards and clearer section styling. Standardize settings headings and simplify the language selector.
  • Add automated regression coverage for current-zone totals, turn-in destinations, background refresh, grouped recommendations and distant fallbacks.

Compatibility: Classic, TBC Classic, Wrath Classic and Mists of Pandaria Classic. Owner testing is on TBC Anniversary; other clients still need live verification. Quest availability and travel remain estimates. Gallery images illustrate the earlier 0.3.3 layout.

Earlier versions

0.3.3 Beta — Zone search and clearer quest planning

  • Search supported zones by English or client-localized name, independently of your level. View level ranges, quest status and travel steps; browse results or clear the search to restore recommendations.
  • Distinguish suitable quests to continue, ready turn-ins and new suitable quests, with clearer reasons for each recommendation.
  • Use Questie's unambiguous finisher zone for ready quests, including cities and destinations outside normal leveling brackets. Keep the quest-log reminder for unknown or ambiguous destinations.
  • Optional Solo mode filters Questie-tagged elite, dungeon, heroic and raid quests from ongoing/new counts, while retaining ready turn-ins.
  • Group settings into Quests, Appearance and Map tabs. Add separate settings-window opacity.
  • Match detail cards to the main panel, update expanded details when Shift changes while hovering, preserve tooltips through refreshes and reduce redraw flicker.
  • Improve observed flight-route weighting and retain level information on known turn-in zones.
  • Expand automated coverage to 28,100 simulated Questie scans, plus search, UI, route, solo-filter and turn-in tests.

Publication follow-up: updated concept gallery (normal recommendations, zone search and settings). These are AI-generated illustrations, not in-game screenshots. No addon code or ZIP change for the gallery/history update.

0.3.2 Beta — Configurable quest level range

  • Add a per-character setting for quest levels above you: +0 to +10, default +2.
  • Start a fresh Questie scan when the setting changes; preserve this preference when resetting appearance.
  • Retain the lower green-range boundary and normal eligibility checks.

0.3.1 Beta — Suitable quests throughout leveling

  • Lower the priority of zones with no suitable available or active quests, including your current zone.
  • Preserve successful empty Questie scans instead of falling back to incomplete observed history.
  • Reconsider zones as your level and quest status change throughout leveling.
  • Treat missing data and integration failures as unknown coverage, not a cleared zone.

0.3.0 Beta — First beta

  • Promote the 0.2.6 feature set to beta after owner-reported testing on TBC Anniversary; no gameplay or routing logic changes in this release.
  • Publish for Classic, TBC Classic, Wrath Classic and Mists of Pandaria Classic. Other clients still require live verification.

0.2.6 Alpha — Recorded flight connections

  • Record reachable connections when opening a flight master's map, saved per character, profile, faction and client language.
  • Use observed flight directions in route planning without assuming reverse connections or unknown unlocks.
  • Clarify Walk/ride and Fly route instructions and guidance for unchecked flight points.

0.2.3–0.2.5 development milestones — Panel, language and routes

These milestones were incorporated into the published 0.2.6 build; separate release notes for each intermediate build are incomplete.

  • Add panel customization, a draggable minimap button, corner scaling and a minimum starting scale.
  • Make English the default, with Norwegian selectable in settings.
  • Add named TBC boat, zeppelin, tram and Dark Portal connections and stronger preference for nearby zones.
  • Improve route/quest readability and prevent map-level tips from overlapping other WoW tooltips.
  • Fix Anniversary startup event registration and world-map opening compatibility.

0.2.2 — Whats Next? name and baseline

  • Rename the addon from QuestCompass to Whats Next?, with the WhatsNext folder, TOC, SavedVariables and /wn commands.
  • Provide world-map level ranges, location-aware zone suggestions, quest-log history and completion checks.
  • Include optional Questie eligibility data, geographic route estimates and per-character persistence.

Earlier QuestCompass development

The migration guide references 0.1.0, 0.2.0 and 0.2.1. Separate change records for those versions are not available in this repository, so their individual changes are not reconstructed here.

Testing and limitations

Owner testing has been on TBC Anniversary. Automated Lua 5.1 tests simulate WoW/Questie and do not replace live verification. Questie is optional; missing data means partial coverage. Routes estimate effort, not fastest travel time, affordability or safety. Search results are lookups, not recommendations. Retail is unsupported and Forever remains unverified.
