Troma Classic Warrior Sounds

Bring classic impact back to your warrior: classic ability and weapon sounds for Retail / Midnight, with Arms & Fury replacements, adjustable audio channels, and an optional overlay mode.

Bring classic impact back to your warrior

Troma Classic Warrior Sounds brings classic-inspired ability sounds and weapon impacts to World of Warcraft Retail / Midnight 12.1. Give your attacks the weight and character of the original sound pack, with a maintained fork built around current Retail behavior.

What you get

  • Classic sounds for supported warrior abilities, including Heroic Strike, Slam, Mortal Strike, Rend, Cleave, Overpower, Execute, Bloodthirst / Bloodbath, Raging Blow / Crushing Blow, Whirlwind, Bladestorm, and Ravager.
  • Weapon-specific impact layers for supported attacks, based on your equipped main-hand two-handed axe, mace, or sword.
  • Arms and Fury replacement profiles, plus an optional overlay mode. Protection keeps Blizzard sounds audible; supported casts can still play custom sounds.
  • Custom sounds on the SFX channel by default, following WoW's Sound Effects volume. Master and Dialog are available as alternatives.
  • Saved settings and automatic updates when you change specialization or weapons.

Latest update — 1.2.5

This release focuses on Heroic Strike and audio reliability:

  • Added direct support for Midnight's Heroic Strike variant.
  • Narrowed replacement mutes to dedicated ability sounds for your specialization, restoring shared weapon effects and sounds for unsupported abilities that older versions could mute.
  • Improved sound cleanup around loading screens and zone changes, with a one-time repair of old CWS mutes when upgrading.
  • Added automatic audio recovery: if all custom sound layers for a supported cast are rejected, CWS temporarily restores Retail sounds while continuing to try classic playback. Replacement resumes after a fully accepted cast.

Classic playback remains enabled in arenas and battlegrounds. Recent player feedback reports a substantial improvement with the latest update; further reports are welcome.

Quick start

Install or update through the CurseForge app, then restart WoW if the game was running during installation. For manual installation, the folder must be named CWS, with CWS.toc directly inside World of Warcraft/_retail_/Interface/AddOns/CWS/.

Replace mode is enabled by default. Keep Sound Effects enabled and adjust its volume in WoW's audio settings. Use /cws test to check playback.

Commands

  • /cws — show available commands.
  • /cws toggle — enable or disable CWS; disabling restores sounds muted by CWS.
  • /cws status — show your specialization, mode, audio channel, and recovery state.
  • /cws test — play a test sound on the selected channel.
  • /cws mode replace — replace selected Blizzard ability sounds with classic sounds (default).
  • /cws mode safe — keep Blizzard sounds audible and layer classic sounds over them.
  • /cws channel sfx — use the Sound Effects channel (default).
  • /cws channel master — use the Master channel.
  • /cws channel dialog — use the Dialog channel.

Audio behavior and troubleshooting

Replace or overlay? Replace mode reduces overlap between Retail and classic ability sounds. WoW's file muting is global, so selected muted ability files can also affect other warriors using those same sounds. Choose /cws mode safe if keeping all Blizzard audio audible is your priority; hearing both sound layers is expected in that mode.

Missing or unexpected sounds? Update to the latest release, run /cws status and /cws test, and check the selected channel's volume. Try Safe overlay if an attack becomes silent. Avoid running another warrior sound-replacement addon alongside CWS when troubleshooting.

Midnight behavior: ability sounds follow confirmed player casts. CWS does not generate guessed impact ticks for Bladestorm or Ravager. Extra sounds tied specifically to critical hits are not available on Midnight; the old floating-combat-text fallback is no longer used.

To report an issue in the comments, include your addon version, game version, specialization, affected ability, PvE/PvP context, and the mode/channel shown by /cws status. Mention whether /cws test is audible and include any Lua error text.
