SpeedLine
SpeedLine is a lightweight, real-time movement speed display for World of Warcraft.
It does one thing and does it cleanly: shows how fast your character is actually moving right now, expressed as a percentage.
Normal running speed is 100%, making the display easy to understand at a glance whether you are walking, mounted, swimming, flying, Skyriding, slowed, boosted, or being carried by certain automated travel systems.
What SpeedLine Shows
SpeedLine displays your current movement speed, not your maximum or theoretical movement speed.
Examples:
- Standing still — 0%
- Normal running — 100%
- Walking — below 100%
- Movement-speed buffs — above 100%
- Slows and snares — the reduced speed actually being applied
- Ground mounts — their current movement speed
- Swimming — current swimming speed
- Steady Flight — current flight speed
- Skyriding — current Skyriding speed as it accelerates and slows
- Vehicles — current vehicle speed when available
- Flight paths and taxis — actual travel speed where position data is available
- NPC-driven and scripted rides — including supported quest wagons and similar automated movement
SpeedLine automatically chooses the appropriate movement data for the situation. You do not need to select different modes manually.
Clean, Readable Display
SpeedLine shows speed as a whole-number percentage with no unnecessary decimals.
The display responds quickly during normal movement while using a slower, easier-to-read update rate during automated travel such as flight paths and scripted rides, where constantly changing numbers would otherwise become distracting.
There is no artificial animation between speeds. If your actual movement speed changes, SpeedLine reports the new value directly.
Movement Modifiers
SpeedLine reflects the movement speed actually being applied by the game.
This includes:
- Movement-speed buffs
- Slows and snares
- Movement abilities
- Mount-speed changes
- Swimming-speed changes
- Vehicle-speed changes
- Skyriding acceleration and deceleration
SpeedLine does not attempt to calculate these effects from your buffs or debuffs. It reads the resulting movement speed directly whenever Blizzard provides it.
Lightweight HUD
The SpeedLine display is designed to stay small and unobtrusive.
- Drag the display to reposition it while unlocked.
- Hold Ctrl + Mouse Wheel over the display to change its scale.
- Lock the display once it is where you want it.
- Customize text, background, and border colors.
- Hide the background for a simple floating percentage.
- Your position and appearance settings are saved automatically.
All configuration is located inside the standard:
Options → AddOns → SpeedLine
There is no separate configuration window and no minimap icon.
Automated Travel
Some World of Warcraft movement does not behave like normal player movement.
Flight paths, NPC-driven wagons, scripted rides, ships, and similar systems may move your character through the world even when the normal player movement API reports little or no speed.
When possible, SpeedLine detects this travel separately and calculates the character's actual horizontal movement through the world.
Automated travel uses a deliberately slower display refresh so the changing percentage remains readable instead of rapidly flickering between values.
API Limitations
SpeedLine only displays movement information that World of Warcraft makes safely available to addons.
Some unusual movement may not expose enough information for an accurate reading.
In particular, Blizzard does not provide addons with reliable world-height movement data, so purely vertical movement such as certain elevators, vertical launches, or falling cannot always be represented as true three-dimensional travel speed.
Certain restricted or specially scripted areas may also prevent position-based travel measurement.
SpeedLine does not invent a speed when reliable movement data is unavailable.
Simple by Design
SpeedLine intentionally does not include:
- Maximum speed tracking
- Speed records
- Historical speed statistics
- Graphs
- Acceleration meters
- Flight instruments
- Unnecessary secondary readouts
There is only one number:
Your current movement speed.
SpeedLine is designed to remain fast, readable, accurate, and exceptionally lightweight while you play.
