SmexyMats - Profession and Crafting Tooltips for Classic Era, TBC, Wrath, Cataclysm, Mists of Pandaria, WoW Forever & Retail

Ever looked at a stack of something in your bags and wondered whether anyone actually needs it? Is it worth keeping for your tailor, selling to a vendor, or sending to the guild bank? SmexyMats answers that the moment you hover the item.

SmexyMats adds profession and crafting information to item tooltips: which expansion an item is from, where a crafting material comes from, which professions use it, and its item ID. Alt+Click an item and a window shows every place you can get it.

SmexyMats was created by LunixiaLIVE, who has given permission for the addon to be taken over and carried on. Version 1.14.0 is the first release of the restored SmexyMats, brought to every current version of the game.

Core Features

Four Lines On Every Tooltip

• Expansion: which expansion the item comes from, as text or as the expansion's logo
• Source(s): where a material comes from — the profession that gathers or makes it (Mining, Herbalism, Skinning, Fishing, Tailoring, Enchanting and so on), a vendor, a drop, a quest, a reputation or PvP reward, or scrap
• Profession(s): every profession that uses the item as a crafting material
• Item ID: the item's ID number, on every item
• A SmexyMats Heading: the lines sit under a SmexyMats heading, so you always know which addon added them, and the heading reminds you which click opens “Where to get it”. It can be switched off
• The [SM] Prefix: each line can also start with [SM], the way SmexyMats always marked its lines. It can be switched off too
• Everywhere Items Show: your bags, the bank, the auction house, loot and chat links — and on Retail and WoW Forever the comparison tooltips beside them and the item tooltips other addons open, such as a profession browser

Icons Or Words

• Profession Icons: professions and sources can be drawn as their icons instead of their names, at a size you choose
• Expansion Logos: the expansion can be drawn as its logo, at its own size
• Colour-Blind Mode: every line in two colours of your choice, one for the labels and one for the values
• Every Line Switchable: turn off any line you do not want

Where To Get It

• Alt+Click Any Material: a window lists every way to get it, one row per place — the creatures that drop it with their drop chance and zone, the vendors that sell it, the ore veins, herbs, fishing pools and chests that hold it, and the bosses, quests, professions, reputations and PvP rewards that give it
• Five Columns: Source, Name, Zone, Chance and Spawns — how you get it, from whom, where, how often it drops, and how many of that creature or node the zone has
• Drops With Conditions Say So: a chance reads, for example, “(quest)” for a drop that only happens while you are on the quest, or “(Horde)”, a profession, “(event)” or “(after a quest)” for drops only some players get
• Map Coordinates: hover a row to see where on the map it is
• Your Faction First: vendors of the other faction are hidden until you press the button at the top right of the window
• Explains Itself: the i at the bottom of the window says what every column means
• Remembers Itself: where you put the window and how big you made it, through reloads and logouts
• Your Choice Of Click: Alt+Click is the default; pick another combination in the options if another addon already uses it, or switch it off
• A Key Binding Too: bind a key under Key Bindings > AddOns > SmexyMats to open the window on whatever item is under your mouse, or type /sm where
• With Questbook: if you run Questbook, click a row and Questbook guides you there; a stop icon on the window ends the guiding
• Covers crafting materials and crafted or gathered items

Built For The Version You Play

• Classic Era, Burning Crusade Anniversary, Mists of Pandaria and WoW Forever: the tooltip information is built from that game version's own data, so it matches the version you are playing. Where that data has a gap, SmexyMats' original material tables fill it in

How It Works

Setup (One-Time)

1. Install SmexyMats through the CurseForge app — the libraries it needs come with it
2. Log in
3. Done! There is nothing to configure

Daily Usage

1. Hover any item in your bags, the bank, the auction house or a chat link
2. Read the SmexyMats lines under the item's own tooltip
3. Alt+Click a material to see where to get it
4. Type /sm to change what is shown

Slash Commands

Configuration

SmexyMats works without any setup. Type /sm to open the options:

• Switch SmexyMats on or off, and show or hide its chat messages (off by default; when on, it says when it has loaded)
• Show or hide the SmexyMats heading, the [SM] prefix, and each line: Expansion, Source(s), Profession(s) and Item ID
• Switch the “Where to get it” click on or off, and choose which click opens it
• Colour-blind mode and its two colours
• Profession icons and expansion logos, and their sizes
• Reset every setting to its default (reloads your interface)

Everything is on by default except the chat messages and colour-blind mode. Icons are on, at size 20 for professions and 50 for the expansion logo.

The “Where to get it” key is bound under Key Bindings > AddOns > SmexyMats. It has no key until you pick one.

• On WoW Forever, hovering an item in another addon's window, such as a profession browser, showed an error instead of SmexyMats' lines.

v1.14.0 - SmexyMats Is Back

The first release of the restored SmexyMats, following LunixiaLIVE's v1.13.2.

New

• Runs on every current version of the game: Classic Era, Burning Crusade Anniversary, Wrath, Cataclysm, Mists of Pandaria, WoW Forever and Retail. Retail support has not been tried in game yet; please report anything that looks wrong there.
• On Classic Era, Burning Crusade Anniversary, Mists of Pandaria and WoW Forever, the tooltip information is built from that game version's own data, so it matches the version you are playing. Where that data has no source or expansion for an item, SmexyMats' original tables fill it in, so the line is never simply missing.
• Sources now also show quests, reputation rewards and PvP rewards.
• A SmexyMats heading above the lines, showing which click opens “Where to get it”. It can be switched off in the options.
• On Retail and WoW Forever, the SmexyMats lines also appear on the comparison tooltips.
• A "Where to get it" window: Alt+Click an item (or pick another click in the options, bind a key, or type /sm where) to see every creature that drops it, every vendor that sells it and every node that yields it, with the zone, the drop chance and how many there are. With Questbook installed, click a row to be guided there. It covers crafting materials and crafted or gathered items, on Classic Era, Burning Crusade Anniversary, Mists of Pandaria and WoW Forever. If ItemDB is also installed and uses the same click, only ItemDB's window opens, since it covers every item; give the two different clicks to use both.
• A guild version check tells you when a guildmate has a newer SmexyMats.

Changed

• SmexyMats has a new home on CurseForge, taken over from LunixiaLIVE with their permission.
• The options panel is now called SmexyMats on every game version, and the load message shows the addon's version.
• Icon sizes are set with sliders.
• The options panel's description now matches what SmexyMats actually does.
• Removed: the "Report errors to chat" option, which never printed anything.

Fixed

• Typing /sm caused an error instead of opening the options.
• Reset in the options did not reset anything, and changing a setting could change the defaults.
• Some materials showed the wrong source — Deeprock Salt, for example, now reads Drop instead of Mining on Classic.
• Item links clicked in chat sometimes showed no SmexyMats lines, or looked up the wrong item.
• The second colour-blind colour had no default, and the Commands heading was missing from the options.

Tips & Best Practices

1. Icons Or Names: profession icons are on by default and keep the tooltip short; turn them off in /sm if you would rather read the names
2. Pick Your Click: if another addon uses Alt+Click, choose another click in /sm
3. Bind The Key: a “Where to get it” key opens the window on whatever you are hovering, without clicking
4. Colour-Blind Mode: choose two colours that are easy for you to tell apart
