Saga Voice

Speak in character without typing in character. Converts your chat line into your race's RP voice as you send it. Optional companion to Saga Keeper.

Not AI. Just a chat converter.

Saga Voice does not use AI to write your chat. Nothing is sent to an outside service. It is a local chat converter that runs inside the game: built-in word lists, race accent rules, and line templates. You type what you mean in plain words; it rewrites the line in your race's voice before it goes out.

It is made for new roleplayers who want to jump in without worrying about what to say. Speak your mind. Tune how much help you get:

  • Accent Light / Medium / Heavy (/voice level)
  • Personality from Saga Keeper (gentle, gruff, jovial, heroic, grim), when Keeper is installed
  • Send mode Instant, Two-step, Preview, or the RP button (/voice mode)
  • Emote helper opt-in and off by default (/voice beta emoteHelper on)
  • IC / OOC left-click the minimap wolf, or /voice ic / /voice ooc
  • Start a line with // to send it exactly as typed

BETA: This is an early beta for WoW Forever. Please report bugs and suggestions in the comments.

Beta note: while Saga Voice is in beta, every new system has its own on/off switch. Extras start off; turn them on in the menu (Options > AddOns > Saga Voice > Beta switches, or /voice beta). If something misbehaves, turn it off and keep using what works while we fix it, and please tell us in the comments.

Switch IC / OOC from the minimap: left-click the wolf to go In Character or Out of Character. In character the wolf howls in full color with a gold glow; out of character it turns grey and quiet. Right-click opens settings.

Saga Voice

Version 0.4.2-beta

Speak in character without typing in character. Saga Voice rewrites your chat line in your race's voice the moment you press Enter.

you type: wtf are you doing?
a dwarf says: What in Muradin's name are ye doin'?

Saga Voice is a separate, optional companion to Saga Keeper, the automatic roleplay journal. It works fine on its own. If Saga Keeper is installed too, your Keeper traits and narrator tone color how you speak (see Personality below).

What's new in 0.4.2-beta

  • Mood minimap orb. Turn on the Mood beta switch and a round M orb appears on the minimap. It changes color with your mood. Left-click to pick Normal / Calm / Angry / Weary / Cheerful / Grim; right-click resets to Normal. Drag it wherever you like on the ring.
  • Works on more WoW clients. Classic Era, MoP Classic, Classic Anniversary (TBC), Retail, and Forever. Instant convert on Classic uses a SendText fallback (Classic never fires the Retail pre-send event).
  • Double emote fix. A laugh word like lol no longer stacks a second action on top of a greeting gesture or mood beat.
  • Still not AI — local word lists, race accents, and templates only. See the section at the top.

Full history is in the Changelog (also in CHANGELOG.md in the download).

Supported versions

  • WoW Forever (Interface 16001)
  • Retail (Midnight / Interface 120105)
  • Classic Era (Interface 11509)
  • MoP Classic (Interface 50504)
  • Classic Anniversary (TBC) (Interface 20506)

Cataclysm Classic is not listed (no longer a live client).

What it does

  • Eight race voices: Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Gnome, Orc, Troll, Tauren, Undead. Each has Light, Medium and Heavy accents (/voice level).

  • Slang to speech: LFG DM, wts, brb, omw, ty, gg and more than a hundred other terms. DM means the Deadmines under level 30 and Dire Maul at 55 and up.

  • PG-13 swearing: swear words always become in-world curses ("By Muradin's beard!", "Elune give me patience!"). They never get worse. Nothing is banned.

  • Actions: *I sit at the bar* Grab me a beer becomes *settles down at the bar, setting the axe aside* "Grab me an ale". /e lines are treated as actions. **like this** is left exactly as typed.

  • Greetings and farewells get a short gesture that fits where you are. There's no snow in Searing Gorge and no weather indoors, and you won't see the same gesture twice in five.

  • Safe in groups: lines with raid markers or crowd-control calls ("Mage sheep moon, Rogue sap triangle") stay Light and plain. Names, item links, numbers and gold always pass through untouched.

  • Too long? If the converted line would go past 255 characters, Saga Voice trims the extra flavor, then softens the accent. If it still doesn't fit, it sends your line exactly as typed and tells you privately.

  • Class and profession flavor: all 9 classes and all 12 professions. Your class colors heal calls, out-of-mana, rallies, thanks and gestures (a mage is "made of cloth and bad decisions", a paladin asks for "Light's mercy"). Priests, paladins, druids and shamans call on their own faith. Your professions add a trade tag to WTS/WTB/LF lines (a blacksmith's "Forged it myself."), plus trade gestures and shop talk. It stays rare: at most one flavored line in every four, never on marker, crowd-control, // or out-of-character lines, and it's the first thing trimmed if a line runs long.

  • Your lines in your journal: with Saga Keeper installed, every in-character line you send is saved to your Keeper journal as a "Said" entry, next to what you typed. On by default, /voice quotes off to stop. Without Saga Keeper, nothing is saved.

  • See what you typed (off to start): with /voice hover on, a small [o] follows your own converted lines in your own chat window. It stays off until it's tested on Forever. Hover it to see your original words, click it to print them. Nobody else sees it. /voice history lists your last 30 lines.

  • Share phrase packs: /voice export turns your phrase book into one line of text you can paste on a forum or Discord; /voice import brings one in. /voice share guild or /voice share <name> offers it in game. Every import shows you the phrases and asks first, packs are only ever read as text, and /voice offers off ignores offers. No guild needed.

  • Smarter conversion: chat-speak like tf and lol is handled anywhere in a line, missing apostrophes come back only where they belong ("ill be there" becomes "I'll be there", "I feel ill" stays), brb bio reads naturally, ALL-CAPS shouts stay shouts, repeated calls become one urgent line, and **text** goes out exactly as typed.

  • Howling wolf minimap button: when you're in character, the ghost wolf howls in full color with golden runes and a gold glow. When you're out of character, it turns grey and quiet, with its mouth closed. It's in the Addon Compartment too, and you can drag it around the minimap ring.

  • Actions done right (switch emoteHelper): in /say an *action* goes out as a real /em; in party, raid, guild and whispers it is written as text (/voice emotestyle asterisks|plain).

  • OOC wrap (switch oocWrap): while you're out of character, /say and /yell lines are wrapped in (( )).

  • Mood dial (switch mood): a round M orb on the minimap (when Mood is on), or /voice mood calm|angry|weary|cheerful|grim. Shapes word choice on top of your accent until you pick Normal.

  • Walk-up openers (switch openers): /voice opener puts an in-character opening line, built from your Saga Keeper journal, into your chat box. Nothing is ever sent without your Enter press.

  • Race packs (switch racePack): each race gets its own greetings, farewells, oaths, battle cries, slang and sign-offs.

  • Send preview (switch sendPreview): a faint line by the chat box shows what will be sent while you type.

Beta switches: quotes, packs, offers, twostepWhisper start on; hover, racePack, sendPreview, welcome, emoteHelper, oocWrap, mood, openers start off. /voice beta lists them; /voice beta <name> on|off changes one. Turning a switch off never deletes your settings, phrases or history.

Updating keeps your settings. Saga Voice only adds to its saved file; settings, phrase books, never-convert words and recent lines from every earlier version carry over, and a damaged part is set aside (under quarantine), never thrown away.

Settings pages

Open Options > AddOns > Saga Voice (or type /voice settings). The main page shows whether you're in or out of character with a Toggle IC / OOC button, the send mode in use, your personality, and links to the sub-pages:

Page What's in it
Channels & Sending In character, accent strength, go OOC in dungeons and raids, send mode, a Mode in use row (shows the send mode in use), and which channels convert
Flavor & Profile Greeting and farewell gestures, occasional mood actions, Class flavor and Profession flavor (both on by default), your Personality from Saga Keeper, a phrase book editor, a never-convert words editor, and Show minimap button
Sharing & Journal Save IC lines to the Saga Keeper journal, show [o] after your lines, your recent lines, phrase-pack Export / Import, Share with guild, and allow pack offers
Beta switches One check box per beta system (see the list above), with the beta note

Each sub-page has a Defaults button. It never clears your phrase book or never-convert words.

Personality (needs Saga Keeper)

Without Saga Keeper, everyone has the same neutral personality and only the race voice changes. With Saga Keeper, the traits you picked in your Keeper profile color your tone. The first matching trait decides your personality:

  • stoic, hot-headed, greedy or cunning: gruff
  • cheerful or curious: jovial
  • protective, devout or wise: gentle
  • brave or honorable: heroic
  • grim: grim

If none of your traits match, your Keeper narrator tone is used instead (heroic, grim or lighthearted). You can see which personality you have on the Flavor & Profile page or with /voice status.

Combat

Blizzard doesn't let addons change chat text during combat lockdown. In combat, every line is sent exactly as typed. A // line is an exception: in combat it isn't sent at all, so don't use // while fighting.

Good to know

  • After installing or updating, fully restart WoW so the wolf icons load (/reload doesn't pick up new image files).

Why this exists: I'm brand new to roleplay and really want to respect the RP community. I built this to help new players like me join in the right way.

Reminder: This is a beta addon. I'd love your feedback, bug reports and suggestions in the comments. See you in WoW Forever!
