Letterbox

Letterbox - Mailbox Helper for all WoW Versions

Letterbox - Mailbox Helper for Classic, Forever and Retail

This is an early test release. It has been played on Classic Era and WoW Forever; the other game versions load the same code but have not been tried in game yet. Please report anything that looks wrong on the Discord (see the bottom of this page).

Emptying a mailbox full of auction house mail one letter at a time? Typing an alt's name for the tenth time today? Letterbox makes the mailbox fast: empty it in one click, pick the mails you want, send to your alts and guildmates without typing their names, and attach a stack of trade goods in one go.

Every feature can be turned on or off on its own, from the small arrow button above the inbox.

Taking Your Mail

Open All

  • Replaces Blizzard's Open All button. One click takes every attachment and all the gold, starting from the last mail
  • Never opens cash-on-delivery or GM mail
  • Keeps bag slots free: choose 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 from the arrow beside the button (1 to start with). Money is still taken when your bags are full, and an item that fits on a stack you already have is still taken
  • Choose which mail it takes: each kind of auction house mail (cancelled, expired, outbid, sold, won), Postmaster items, and all other mail with attachments. Shift-click the button to ignore those choices and take everything
  • Carries on past the mail the server shows at once, picking up more as the server sends it
  • Optionally says each mail in chat as it opens it, with the gold and, for auctions, the buyer or seller
  • At the end, one chat line says what was left behind and why: COD, from a GM, bag space, or an item you can only carry one of
  • If it ever stops, click it again to skip whatever is stuck

Select

  • A numbered checkbox on every inbox row
  • Shift-click checks every mail between your last click and this one; Ctrl-click checks or unchecks every mail from the same sender
  • Open takes everything from the checked mail; Return sends the checked mail back to its senders, skipping mail that cannot be returned
  • Its own bag slots to keep free, and its own "Say each mail in chat" choice

Express Clicks

  • Shift-click an inbox row to take everything from that mail (never COD mail)
  • Ctrl-click an inbox row to return it to its sender
  • Hovering a mail with several attachments lists every one of them, and says which shortcuts work on that mail
  • With the Send tab open, Alt-click an item in your bags to attach it. If you have already typed who it is for, the mail is sent straight away (you can turn that off)
  • With the Send tab open, Ctrl-click an item in your bags to attach it along with similar items

Mailbox Window (List View)

  • An optional inbox of its own, opened with the List view button above Blizzard's inbox. Off until you choose it, and it remembers your choice
  • One row per mail, letters included; click the arrow to open it into its attachments and money, each with its real game tooltip
  • Click an attachment to take just that; Shift-click or right-click a mail to take everything on it
  • Filter by item, sender or subject, then Take Shown takes what the filter left
  • The envelope returns a mail to its sender
  • Keeps free the bag slots you set on Open All's arrow
  • Send mail swaps in a send box in the same style: your bags in one list, click an item to attach it, click it again to put it back
  • Sits against the right edge of the mailbox and moves with it, just past the Quick Attach buttons on the Send Mail tab. Drag it away to put it anywhere; drop it near the mailbox again to snap it back on. Its size and place are remembered
  • Blizzard's inbox takes you back to the normal inbox

Reading Your Mail

  • Expiry icon: under each mail's time left, an icon shows whether the mail will be deleted or sent back when it runs out. Click it to do that now; deleting a mail with items or money asks first
  • Full subject: hovering a mail whose subject is cut off shows the whole subject
  • Copy mail: a small button on an open mail with text, or an auction invoice, opens it as text you can copy with Ctrl+C
  • Forward: a Forward button on an open mail starts a new mail with the same subject and text, and moves the attachments into it. Not for mail with money, COD or items that stack
  • Too-much-mail notice: when the server is holding more mail than it shows, one chat line says so, with roughly how long until more arrives, instead of the warning under the inbox
  • Minimap mail icon: hidden when you close the mailbox having read everything

Sending Mail

Contact Book

  • An arrow beside the To: box lists your contacts, the people you mailed recently, your alts, your friends and your guild. Pick a name to mail it
  • Contacts: add the name in the To: box, or remove it
  • Recently mailed: the last 20 people you mailed from this realm and faction, newest first, with a Clear list option
  • Alts: your characters on this realm and faction, with level and class; All alts lists every character you have anywhere. Characters you no longer play can be deleted from the list
  • Friends, and every guild member with level, class and rank
  • Long lists are split into pages of 25

Name Completion

  • Typing in the To: box fills in the rest of a name from your alts, the people you mailed, your contacts, your Battle.net friends and your guild. Each source can be turned off
  • Also sets what Blizzard's own completion offers: friends, guild members, whether to leave out people you only met, and whether to hide Blizzard's name list

To: Box Helpers

  • Opening the Send tab fills in the last person you mailed (you can turn that off)
  • After a send, the name stays for the next one
  • Clicking the To: box selects its text, and it remembers the last 15 names

Quick Attach

  • A column of buttons beside the Send tab, one per kind of trade good for your game version
  • Left-click one to attach every item of that kind from your bags, until the mail is full
  • Right-click one to give it a default recipient, who is filled in when you use it
  • Choose which bags it takes from

Small Helpers

  • Coin subject: put money on a mail with no subject and the subject becomes the amount; take the money off and it is cleared again. A subject you typed is never changed
  • Gold summary: when you close the mailbox after a visit that made you money, one chat line says how much, with postage and COD payments already taken off
  • Block trades at the mailbox: while the mailbox is open, trade requests are blocked and guild charter requests are declined. Your own trade-blocking setting is always put back as it was
  • Postage: the Postage line on the Send tab sits clear of the buttons beside it; hover it to see the full postage

Settings

Click the small arrow button above the inbox, beside Open and Return. Its menu has:

  • A checkbox to turn each feature on or off
  • An options submenu for each feature that has settings of its own
  • Chat window: which chat window Letterbox writes to
  • Profiles: choose, copy from, delete, create or reset a profile. Each character starts with its own profile; tick "New characters share one profile" to have new characters share one instead
  • Help: what every feature does, in a window you can read in game

Slash Commands

  • /letterbox — say which version of Letterbox is running. Everything else is in the settings menu at the mailbox

Recent Updates

v0.0.2 — fixes from the first test

Fixed

  • The List view button no longer shows on the Send Mail tab. It stayed up after you switched tabs and sat on top of the To: box. It now hides with the inbox, like the Open and Return buttons beside it.
  • The Postage line on the Send Mail tab no longer runs into the buttons beside it. It is smaller and centred between them; hover it to see the full postage.
  • The Mailbox window no longer covers the Quick Attach buttons. On the Send Mail tab it sits just past them, and moves back against the mailbox on the inbox.
  • The Mailbox window now lists mail that is only a letter. An inbox holding only letters used to look empty there.

v0.0.1 — first test release

New

  • Letterbox is here. Everything on this page arrived in this release: Open All, Select, Express clicks, the Mailbox window and its send box, the expiry icon, full subjects, Copy mail, Forward, the contact book, name completion, the To: box helpers, Quick Attach, coin subjects, the gold summary, blocking trades at the mailbox, and the settings menu with profiles.
  • Played on Classic Era. The other game versions load the same code but have not been tried in game yet.

Before reporting a bug, this makes it far easier to fix:

  • Say which version of Letterbox you are running, and on which game version.
  • Say what you did at the mailbox and what happened instead.
  • Include any error message the game showed.
