Grimoire of the Last Guardian

A cursed diary that records your journey through Azeroth (loot, boss kills, quests, level-ups and close calls), annotated by the voices trapped in its pages, with chapters, a map route and stats.

Grimoire of the Last Guardian

You find it on the road, half buried in mud: an old book with a broken clasp and an eye on its cover. When you open it, the ink begins to move. A tired voice calls itself Medivh, the last Guardian of Tirisfal. Beneath him, colder and patient, something else is listening.

"You said yes before you heard the whole of it. That is how I ended up in Karazhan."

Medivh is watching

This addon is a voice first and a diary second. A piece of Medivh is caught in these pages, and he has nothing to do but watch you. So he talks: about the quest you just took, the boar you just skinned, the ledge you just fell from, the level you just reached. He speaks like an old storyteller at your shoulder: second person, present tense, dry, a little sensual and a little ominous. And now and then his own past slips through, the tower, his apprentice Khadgar, his mother, the raven, the Portal.

"Still here. The candle in my tower has burned down twice in my head since you last moved."

"Pick, stoop, rise. Khadgar sorted my library like this for a year. He never once complained. I should have thanked him."

"I died once too. It was far more dramatic. A tower. An apprentice. An old friend with a sword. I digress."

What he talks about

  • Almost everything you do. Quests taken and handed in, level-ups, kills and elites, new gear, gathering and crafting, deaths, close calls, falls, discovered places, villages, inns, flight masters, trainers, dungeons and raids entered and completed, battlegrounds, duels, world PvP, gold, new spells, standing still too long.
  • Your quests by name. Many quests in the starting zones and the Barrens have lines of their own, and he never repeats a quest remark: when his words are spent, he keeps still.
  • Azeroth's history, fitting your level. Hogger and Cookie while you are young, the old kingdoms in the middle years, the Lich King and the Burning Legion near the end.
  • Your emotes. Dance, kneel, cry, pray, laugh or be rude, and he has an answer.
  • Questions for you. Now and then he asks something about your character. Your answer is written into the diary, in your own words.
  • More than 2,000 lines, every one of them in English, German, Spanish and French.

Written around your character

His words are not dumped in the chat. A quill writes them in the air, letter by letter, over your character's head and to its sides, and steps aside for open windows. Prefer a small notice or the chat? Switch it. How often he speaks is up to you: often, pleasant or rare.

The one beneath

Medivh is not alone in the book. Sargeras, the dark titan who once ruled his mind, listens underneath, and speaks in violet when Medivh falls silent.

"Do not listen to him. He lost one world. I have won worlds."

  • The scale. Finished quests, lost pages and bosses tip it toward Medivh. Slain critters, world PvP, duels, close calls and deaths tip it toward Sargeras. The darker it grows, the more often the other voice answers you. /grimoire scale says where you stand.
  • Lost pages. Eight pieces of Medivh's life lie where they happened, from Tirisfal to Karazhan to the Black Morass. Walk there and the page returns to the book, and Medivh would rather it had not. /grimoire pages reads them as their own chapter.

"Oh. Oh no. I did not want to remember this."

And the diary he keeps

  • Rare (blue) or better items that land in your bags
  • The first kill of every boss, with the names of your group, and dungeons and raids completed for the first time (wings count on their own)
  • Finished questlines and campaigns, class quests and profession quests, with the reward you chose
  • Level-ups, with what led to them and a tally of the level just finished
  • Achievements, reputation standings, profession ranks, new mounts and pets
  • Gear worn for the first time, and things you crafted yourself the first time you wear or use them
  • First visits to dungeons and raids, arrival in cities and villages, fully explored zones
  • Close calls, deaths and new fall records out in the world
  • Gold milestones, kill counts per creature type, your own goals and your own notes Every entry knows when and where it happened. Each character keeps its own diary. You choose which milestones are tracked, and how loudly each one is announced.

The journal

  • An experience bar with your moments on it, every entry at the exact point where it happened. Step back through earlier levels or zoom out to stretches of ten.
  • A list of all entries with filters, search and notes.
  • Your level, told as a story in short paragraphs.
  • Chapters per zone, a year in review, a record book across all your characters, and goals you set yourself.
  • A tooltip line on items the journal knows.
  • Automatic screenshots, text export and statistics.

The world map

Open the world map and your steps are drawn as a line, one route for every level, with the milestones along it. Press Play journey and a dot walks your road again, from map to map, and each milestone rises as the dot reaches it. Teleports and hearthstones are not drawn across; an arrow shows where the path takes up again.

Commands

/grimoire (short: /glg) or the minimap button opens the book. /grimoire help lists everything. A few favourites:

  • /grimoire note <text> writes a line of your own
  • /grimoire story, /grimoire chapters, /grimoire year, /grimoire records
  • /grimoire goal <text> sets a goal for yourself
  • /grimoire trail play plays your route on the map
  • /grimoire export shows your journal as text you can copy

Languages

English, German, Spanish (also Latin America) and French, chosen by your game client's language. Every comment exists in all four. Any other client gets English.

Supported game versions

  • Retail
  • WoW: Forever, with its own new quests, dungeons and the campfire "Boosted Rest"
  • Classic Era, plus the other Classic clients (Burning Crusade, Wrath, Cataclysm, Mists of Pandaria) Download the file for your client, or the one without a suffix, which carries a manifest for every client; the game picks the right one. Older clients have fewer interfaces than Retail, so features that depend on them (achievements, mount and pet journals, campaigns) are quietly left out there.

Good to know

  • The book only reads. It does not cast, target, send chat, trade or automate anything. It shows no ads and sends nothing over the network. Everything stays in your own saved variables (GrimoireOfTheLastGuardianDB).
  • Since patch 12.0 the game hides the combat log and many values inside instances. The book works within that: boss kills come from encounter events, items from your bags, close calls only out in the open world.
  • Coming from Deedlog or Medivh's Last Grimoire? In WTF/Account/<name>/SavedVariables, copy MedivhsLastGrimoire.lua (or Deedlog.lua) to GrimoireOfTheLastGuardian.lua. The journal moves over on the next start.

Feedback

Found a bug, miss a milestone, or did Medivh say something that does not fit? Leave a comment or open an issue. Please tell me your game version, your client language and, if a Lua error popped up, the error text.
