Deedlog

Look back on the adventures you had while traveling through Azeroth: Deedlog records your milestones and replays your route on the world map.

Deedlog

A way to look back on the adventures you had while traveling through Azeroth.

Deedlog keeps the diary of your character. It does not log every mob and every copper coin. It writes down the moments you will want to remember later: the first boss you downed, the questline you finally finished, the fall you barely survived, the day you reached level 40. Then it gives them back to you as a journal, a story and a route on the world map.

How it works

Play as usual. Deedlog listens in the background and adds an entry whenever something worth remembering happens. Every entry knows when and where it happened, and at which point of the level's experience bar. Open the journal with /deedlog, or with the minimap button, and look back.

Each character keeps its own diary. Nothing is sent anywhere, everything stays in your own saved variables.

The journal

  • An experience bar with your moments on it. Every entry sits at the exact point of the bar where it happened, framed in its type color or the item's quality color. Step back through your earlier levels with the arrows, or zoom out to the whole journey and to stretches of ten levels.
  • A list of every entry with its icon, date, level and place. Filter by type, search, add notes to any entry.
  • Your level, told as a story. Press the story button and the level on the bar is told in short paragraphs: what led to the level-up, which quests you finished, what you found, where you were.
  • Chapters per zone, a year in review, a record book across all your characters, and goals you set yourself that Deedlog checks off when it sees them reached.
  • A tooltip line on items the journal knows: "In the journal since …".
  • Text export and a statistics view, for sharing or just for the numbers.
  • Automatic screenshots at milestones, if you want them.

What gets recorded

  • Rare (blue) or better items that land in your bags
  • The first kill of every boss, with the names of your group
  • Finished questlines and campaigns, class quests and profession quests, with the reward you chose
  • Level-ups, with what led to them and a tally of the level just finished
  • Achievements, reputation standings, profession ranks, new mounts and pets
  • Gear you wear for the first time, fully equipped sets, and things you crafted yourself (the first time you wear or use them)
  • The first visit to each dungeon or raid, arrival in cities and inns, and fully explored zones
  • Close calls, deaths and new fall records out in the world
  • Gold milestones, kill counts per creature type, and your own goals and notes

You decide what counts. A welcome screen on first start offers default settings or custom ones: which milestones are tracked, and how loudly each is announced (only in the journal, a small notice beside the minimap, or across the screen). Every setting can be changed later in Settings, AddOns, Deedlog.

The world map

Open the world map and your steps are drawn as a line, one route for every level, with the milestones along it as small icons. Hover a milestone to read what happened there.

  • Step between levels with the two arrows beside the level label.
  • Press Play journey: the map switches to where the route began, a dot walks the route again, follows you from map to map, and each milestone swells and fades its description in as the dot reaches it. The dot stops for a moment while a milestone is shown.
  • The route is not drawn across teleports, hearthstones and loading screens. Where you were carried off, an arrow points to where the path takes up again.
  • The Map button on the journal's level bar opens the world map and plays the route of that level, or of a whole stretch of ten levels, one after the other.
  • Don't want the line? Hide it with one button, or switch recording off entirely.

Commands

/deedlog (short: /dl) opens the journal. /deedlog help lists everything. A few favorites:

  • /deedlog note <text> writes a line of your own
  • /deedlog story, /deedlog chapters, /deedlog year, /deedlog records
  • /deedlog goal <text> sets a goal for yourself
  • /deedlog trail play plays your route on the map
  • /deedlog mark marks the quest selected in your quest log as a milestone
  • /deedlog export shows your journal as text you can copy
  • /deedlog options and /deedlog welcome

Languages

English, German, Spanish (also Latin America) and French, chosen by the language of your game client. Any other client gets English.

Supported game versions

Retail, WoW: Forever and the Classic clients (Classic Era, Burning Crusade, Wrath, Cataclysm, Mists of Pandaria). One download contains a manifest for each, and the game picks the right one. The older Classic clients have fewer interfaces than Retail, so features that depend on them (achievements, the mount and pet journals, quest campaigns) are quietly left out there.

Good to know

  • Deedlog only reads. It does not cast, target, send chat, trade or automate anything. It shows no ads and sends nothing over the network.
  • Since patch 12.0 the game hides the combat log and many values inside instances. Deedlog works within that: boss kills come from encounter events, items from your bags, and close calls are only measured out in the open world.
  • WoW: Forever beta: the beta client currently does not read addon saved variables back at login. This is a client problem reported on the official forums and affects every addon, not only Deedlog. Your journal will be there again once the client is fixed.

Feedback

Found a bug, miss a milestone, or have an idea for a new one? Please leave a comment or open an issue. Tell me your game version and, if a Lua error popped up, the error text.
